Oral melanoma is the most common malignant oral tumor in dogs. In this vlog, Dr Sue covers an overview of oral malignant melanoma.
She covers where they metastasize or spread to, what diagnostic tests you will want to do, the prognosis. how we treat including the melanoma immunotherapy vaccine. This vaccine does not prevent melanoma from developing (like a rabies vaccine) but does assist with microscopic disease. Watch to learn more about how it works.
Early detection is so important. Catching this type of tumor early is always beneficial from both a management and treatment standpoint. If you observe a mass or any abnormality in your dog’s mouth, please talk with your veterinarian to determine an appropriate course of action.

My dog was diagnosed with oral malignant melanoma over a year ago. We threw the kitchen sink at it; surgery, radiation and the vaccine. He responded really well to the treatment. However the tumor started to grow back. He is still happy and full of life. I am really grateful for the extended time I’ve had with him. Right now we are just managing some nausea which comes in waves. I know my time with him is coming to an end, which I am extremely bummed about. I do believe the treatments extended his life. I was extremely concerned about putting him through the treatments, but we went ahead with it and I am glad we did. I believe it gave me extra time with him.

Thank you for putting this together. My boy has been in remission from his oral melanoma for 8 months now. Was a rough start being told he had 3 months to live. He went through the melanoma vaccines and many other health/diet changes.

Hi, just wondering how your fur baby is doing now (July 2022). Our little baby was diagnosed with an oral melanoma. She is 10 and has already had surgery and the vaccine. Sadly it is back now and we have decided to do radiation, but really not sure if putting her through more treatment is the right thing to do. Such a tough decision.

I have a 15 year old yellow lab who has a tumor in her mouth. It looks just like your pictures. It is mid mouth on the lower jaw. It was misdiagnosed as “gum overgrowth” probably 6 months ago. Now it is the size of a large meatball and has spread to under her tongue. The vet didn’t test the tumor, didn’t mention any treatment beyond surgery, and we are basically keeping her comfortable until it is time for her to go. It is growing pretty rapidly. Wish I had known about the vaccine 6 months ago. Once she passes I will be leaving my local vet, as I have had other issues with them also.

Thank you Dr. Sue. I just discovered a tiny black mass behind my golden retriever's bottom front teeth. He's 7.5 years old. I took him to the vet immediately - negative chest x-rays, and blood work pending, but she's guessing melanoma. I have an appointment with an oncology team tomorrow morning and have been looking everywhere for a helpful resource like this to inform me on what's coming next. You've been a tremendous help for me tonight, and for Crawford.

@@MissLaceyNoel We were extremely lucky. Crawford's black growth was benign - MedVet was excellent. They performed a head CT Scan and Mandibulectomy, removed all of the tissue, sent it to labs and gave me the incredibly lucky results. I squeeze him every day and check the area to ensure there are no growths. He turns 9 this year. What we did unfortunately discover through all the testing was that Crawford has a heart valve condition, one that will worsen over the course of his life. He is on two medications now 2x a day daily. So in a sense, we were lucky the growth grove us into a hospital for all the testing. His vets never heard murmurs. I do want to note how grateful I was to have pet insurance, which was an incredible resource throughout all of this. I use Nationwide and have saved thousands, which has resulted in incredible care for Crawford and I highly recommend others do the same before situations like these arise.

Hi Kevin, sorry for your loss. My Yorkshire Terrier is 13 years old. I noticed my dog’s face looked kind of swollen. I took him to the Vet. I was told he has this disease. Through a examination only! No X-rays, no blood work. Anywho the Vet advised surgery and meds. So we agreed on meds first to see if the tumor would go down. My dog started coughing, gagging and sneezing. I took him for a appointment scheduled for the following week. The Vet told me there was nothing more she could do for my dog. The receptionist handed me Hospice pamphlets and started giving me recommendations. I took him to a second Vet and got my hopes high when he told me he would perform a surgery for me. He asked me when, I told him as soon as possible. He scheduled me for the following week Tuesday morning. I drop my dog off I got a call at 10 AM asking me if I could be in the office at 11 AM and the doctor will talk to me when I arrive. When I arrived the doctor automatically told me he will not be performing the surgery due to the place where the tumor is. He said he will literally have to cut into the face of my dog. There’s a possibility that the tumor will return and he believes that the tumor is traveling to his bones. So heart wrenching. I know I have to make a decision and this is a tough one!

@@mscecilett my heart breaks for u the decision you make is completely up to you. I could like to share with you too but also considering that you never know what could happen. And out of all the things that I’ve seen, when you cut it comes back with a vengeance. Now that being said my vet advised me to make our coco comfortable and give her everything she wants to eat and make her happy because there’s nothing more to do. And it was devastating to hear and obviously we did everything we could ever do besides surgery there are so many things you can try from oils and cbd to vitamin and I hope you find yourself not caught up in the pain because it’s consuming and they can feel that. Do your best to hang in there and stay strong for them and know that everyday life is a gift and thank you for reminding me of this. Then when it’s time, you’ll know and they will let you know but as long as they are comfortable and not in pain or suffering, enjoy every single second you have. I am sending you so much love from Vancouver Canada 🇨🇦 and keep me updated with your decisions because when we were told that coco having surgery would take her smile away I couldn’t bear with doing that to her, we sang until her very last breath and she was with family members and surrounded by so much love, God bless you

@@LouisLuzuka Hello Louis, first of all I would like to thank you for the comfort and support you have giving me and my family with your story. Just knowing that it is coming from Canada 🇨🇦 to us living here in Nevada is Extraordinary! I’m trying to come to grips with reality. My 18 year old son broke down in tears yesterday after returning home from a visit with other family members. As he walked through the door our dog named Princeston approached him. My son kneeled down and Princeston laid his head on his lap. I never cried so hard in my life! My 13 year old daughter is trying to pull it together. She’s says Mom, I just want to remember all the good times that we shared. She also said I wish we could do more. So sad, I go to bed crying and when I wake my eyes are burning. I’m keeping a close watch because I don’t want him to suffer. He’s still eating and drinking. He has slowed down a bit on the walks. Oh God, give me strength! There has to be a cure somewhere out there. Thanks again for sharing and May God bless you and your family. May your little angel Coco Rest In Peace. 🙏🙏💕💕

Hi Dr. Sue. My dog is 13 years old. I’ve taken my Yorkshire Terrier to 2 vets. They are denying any kind of surgery. They are advising to put him down. I cried all day today. I had to break the news to my kids. My 13 year old daughter said, there’s got to be something more that we can do. His tumor is located at the right top side of his mouth. I had to rush him to the ER last most because he had blood oozing from his eye.

My dog was just finally diagnosed yesterday. He has a tumor that grew so large in a month, it's bigger than my fist. It's on his throat and started in his lower jaw. It's inoperable. However, it appears to not have gone to the lungs. Because he is 12 yo, and because of radiation being $6-10k a round of radiation, we opted for the vaccine rounds instead. It may prolong his quality of life and we also have an anti-inflammatory we give him once a day to help with it. I saw a noticeable change the very next day. It's slightly smaller in the neck area. Not sure if it's due to the anti-inflammatory or a combination of that and the vaccine. The vaccine is $800 every two weeks. It's rough, but its our only hope. The vet things because this is aggressive, this is the best option as it's probably in other undetected areas.

Can you do a video about oral melanoma in cats? :( my cat has one, I assume its somewhat similar to dogs scenario. We are doing more tests in a couple days to see if has reached other parts of the body bedore doing any surgery. It is on the lower, front side, of the mouth/lip so theoretically easier to remove.

I just noticed this on my dogs chin and upper lip. I’ve seen it before on my old dog when I was a kid and he is 11 now. I’ve been treating it with cbd. Topical ointment and systemic tincture. I give him about 50mgs orally each day once, and do the ointment twice. I wish they could give dogs stronger pain meds tho. I can’t imagine having to deal with cancer just taking NSAIDs. Even a beast like toridol

They aren’t actual tumors tho. They look like flat pancake sores that aren’t open but still look swollen and have tiny blood pricks in them.

Both are on the outside of his mouth too. None of the inner tissue is effected. Like the tissue lining his mouth. But you can feel they’re hard. I’m hoping it might be a parasite from our new cat (he has worms we are treating) but it looks just like what my golden retriever had when I was in middle school as a kid. I’m so bummed out- he’s been my side kick for the last ten years and I can’t imagine being without him. I feel like I’ve wasted so much time.

our 14 year old Cockapoo was recently diagnosed with OMM. she had a 3cm tumor removed from her lower jaw near the last molar. No lymphatic invasion, no metastasis but a mitotic rate of 18. radiation was suggested but we don't want to put her through that with her heart murmur. the vaccine is our best option right now but the supply is scarcely which prompts my question: can the protocol of a 2-week interval be stretched a bit? our Oncologist has only enough supply for the first two shots as they are not getting any further stock till December. our dog will get the first injection on Nov 1, 2022. what's your advise?

@@DrSueCancerVet If I understood you correctly, it's given every 6 months for the remainder of their lives, which is usually just 22 months or so? So most dogs only get it three more times before they likely passes from melanoma? Apologies if I misunderstood, just sad to know that not even early detection and a vaccine can really save your dog.

Because the money is in the treatment, not the cure. Notice how a lot of these Drs that push "conventional" medicine don't talk about immune system support, diet quality, Vaccinosis, the dangers of the incredibly high carb content and over processing kibble has/goes through, how some of the drugs used in anesthesia contain carcinogens, how radiation can cause other tumors to develop later after treatment.
