One of the most underrated Musicians in the industry! The whole package. Multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, writer, arranger, producer, Engineer. Jeff Pilson is the REAL DEAL!!
Jennifer Kelman he still is even in his 60's sure he improvises some solos here and there but that's lynch for ya always experimenting and nothing wrong with that. His kxm stuff is killer! I hope i look as good and play as good as he does when im at 60!
@@robertshabarekh610Well Don's current vocals yeah, but the album version of this song is 1000x better. Jeff over sings here and there are some notes that his tone is a bit odd. Now if he were to do the final recording, that would be the real comparison.
@@gooberthoreau I agree completely! Don's voice definitely took a hit with the radiation treatments and other health issues, but I still prefer his original vocals over Jeff's. Don't get me wrong - Jeff is an awesome singer, bassist, composer, and all of that; however, no one sounds like Don (in my opinion)!
Donald had a great band with amazing talent.. Pilson on backing vocals carried a lot of the vocal weight. I heard Dons singing voice is completely gone and he acts like it’s the sound guys fault or the mic /PA equipment while performing. No bueno. Own your stuff, Donald.. the fans deserve it
@@FFLL2112 Don's voice is trash. I shouldn't be able to sing the songs better than the guy who wrote them. I dont expect his voice to sound like it did back in the 80s. Very few singers from back then still sound the same. But god damn Don's voice is trash now. I give him props for still touring but he just needs to stop. I'm a huge kiss fan to and I would love kiss to tour forever. But Paul's voice is gone too.
I am blown away that Don Dokken is playing the bass lol. 1:40 never seen him do that before. This is an unusual set and I don't know the story behind it :)
My opinion is if the classic line up decides to do more reunion shows, then Jeff needs to step up to the mic, and let Don play bass and harmonized with Jeff. I believe people would be happy with that.
I was there! At the Strand in Redondo Beach, ca 1995. Was a gift from my brother in law.....a limited engagement,it wasn't even advertised in normal circles! He called me up and asked me if I wanted to go see Dokken and I was like, dude they broke up! They aren't together anymore.....he said thats not what I said lol. So we went. And let me tell you this video doesn't do the atmosphere at this gig justice! It was magical! And we were right in front of George Lynch! It was epic
jeff is and always will be the man! He even had Jedi powers in the movie Rock Star. when they are laying down bass tracks in the studio they ask him to make it more raunchy and he says "sounds pretty raunchy in here" and they were like "these aren't the droids we're looking for "
It is Dokken ..Don is on bass/backing vocals Dokken'$ only enemy are themselves.Jeff sounds really good on vocals/guitar and yes I would pay to see this line up. Long live Dokken the best rock band to ever roam this earth(in my humble opinion)
This is JEff Singing lead in this video, if you don't realize this, you haven't a clue. Dokken was a great band, the problem is Don is the biggest douche ever, Saw him a couple years ago and he just could not sing. Tried to blame it on the Coach house's Tech. I've seen hundreds of live shows and many *0s bands who have toured in the past 5 or 10 years. He's the only singer I can not find a fucking good thing to say about. And in this version, Don is definitely not singing. Don can't sing shit
My favorite member as well. Kept the peace, played a killer support role, wrote or co-wrote my favorite songs of theirs…he’s awesome. Loved seeing him in Foreigner a few years ago, still being the best “hype man” bass guitarist.
Jeff is without a doubt one of my favorite musicians of all time. He plays a number of instruments extremely well and he is an absolute fantastic vocalist. I could listen to this guy sing all day.
All really good live bands needed at least two lead singers. One was the frontman, the others were the anchors of the vocals. Those bands were, and are, the best live ones.
David Lee Roth/Michael Anthony, Freddie Mercury/Roger Taylor, Bruce Dickinson/Adrian Smith, James Hetfield/Jason Newsted, Layne Staley/Jerry Cantrell. Those are just a few that come to mind!
Absolutely correct! Lennon/McCartney! The Eagles! Chris Fucking Squire of Yes! Those are THE BEST bands. For me the #1 thing that sets a band apart, especially live, is quality backing vocals. Pilson is up there with the very best.
Jeff had the voice , the hair(which was waaay better then Don's) , the charisma as a lead vocalist . His whole vibe is dope , i don't understand why people didn't give them a try without Don ? .. Shit coulda been AMAZING ! I mean just look at this video , it WAS amazing !!!
Ive interviewed Jeff. Besides being an amazing talent, he's an incredibly affable and likable guy! He even called me back the next day to see if I needed more info for my piece! If 17 year old me back in the 80's could have seen the future to me looking at my cell phone showing "Jeff Pilson Calling" I wouldn't have believed it.
Dokken should have had Jeff Pilson sing a few songs or he could've sung more backup vocals and harmonizing parts, it would have made Dokken more Dynamic as a band.
Nearly all of the harmonies, especially the high stuff, on all Dokken recordings - was Jeff singing. Listen to the original demo of “Dream Warriors” here on RU-vid where he sings lead and dubs in the harmonies, and you’ll be able to hear his contribution to the final recording. The high melody voice in the chorus for “In My Dreams” is him. Don is doing falsetto in that harmony. The body of the sound in that song’s chorus is coming from Jeff’s voice, with Don and Mick harmonizing over him.
Amazing just amazing This band and Mr Pilson are special...wish I could say this in person thank you for some of the best songs I've heard in my 50 years of life❤
Jeff has always been an excellent singer. Whether it's backup or lead vocals, he's great. Checkout his side projects (War & Peace and L/P) where he does all the lead vocals...great stuff. Jeff is fantastic!
I love Dokken. And yes, Don's voice is gone, but he was great! Jeff Pilson is just awesome here. Dude is woefully under rated. Just remember guys, without Don, some of those Iconic Dokken songs we love might never have been written, or maybe they wouldn't be the songs we remember now. Ya know, shit happens. I'm sure Don wishes he could still hit those notes he used to, so go easy on him. I drove from Dallas to Sioux Falls, South Dakota a few years ago just to see these guys, Dokken, the original lineup. It was a warm up show for the 6 show tour they did in Japan. I had a great day and a lot of fun at that show. It was rough, for sure and Don's voice was suffering, but everybody in the audience sang every word to every song and marveled at Lynch and Pilson, even when he had to start Paris is Burning 3 times, and it was AWESOME!!! I'm sure some don't see it that way, because it wasn't all polished and perfect, but I do. It was more like we were all just hanging out with our favorite band from the eighties. I was 10 or 12 feet from George Lynch playing all those old tunes! Great day!
There wouldn’t be a dokken without Don cause he hired the rest of the members like a band for his solo carrer and breaking the chains was the first album from his ”solo” carrer but it changed after that album.
Jeff has that range still to this day, and Don just cannot do it anymore. I mean Don can still sing, but not in that high falsetto anymore. I will say the tables have turned, and Don harmonizing with Jeff would be awesome!
He sounds way better than Don has since the 90s. I just love his voice. That "golden tenor". Reminds me of Peter Frampton, "Lonesome Dave" Peverett (Foghat/Savoy Brown), etc. Clean and smooth but with a little grit on hand if needed.
Kale Baldwin WHOA- You said Peter Frampton, that's exactly the the same vocal tones I heard from Frampton Comes Alive album many years ago. I totally agree,Jeff sounds great!
I remember reading that Don Dokken had some sort of vocal chord surgery somewhere around the 80's. Still I think he had a very limited voice range even on a good day. Musically speaking, the Lynch, Pilson and Brown trio had some real heavy chord structures, very melodic hooks, and Don's voice was always a bad counterweight.
Man, I've been a Dokken fan from the start, and I knew Jeff was a.talent. But this is amazing. What a voice! They should have booted Don for Jeff from the beginning. New name: Pilson.
Jeff on Bass toured with Foreigner including Jason Bonham on drums Including Boston and The End Machine collaboration with front man Roberta Mason (Warrant) George Lynch (Lynch Mob & Dokken) Mick on drums ❣️❣️❣️
saw Dokken open for KISS on Tooth N Nail tour, Jeff Pilson was epic, could not take my eye off him, what an amazing talent, thank you Jeff and all of Dokken , members for all the great music on the first 4 ep/lp....... it will live forever....
It is hard to imagine how old this music is. I remember buying the first record and seeing them in concert many times. And it seemed like an eternity later around 1988 talking to this guy at a party who was close to the band and he told me that Jeff Pilson was an even better singer then Don. And I remember disputing that.
George has stated in many interviews that Don was not a very good singer until he came into his own on the Tooth and Nail album. I remember having all the Dokken records as a kid. On vinyl.
Jeff Pilsin has a way much better voice than Don Dokken. Jeff should of been the singer and called Pilsin not Dokken. Awesome Jeff just pure Awesomeness!!!!!!!
I’ve seen dokken every time they come to Buffalo they’re one of my favs if not thee fav and usually nobody can ever replace an original singer but after listening to JP man I gotta just say WOW!
I love this DVD. One of the most talented greatest bands ever. Each one a great in their own right..and while I agree Jeff's singing is good and his harmonies contributed so much, dons leads made Dokkens sound set apart. Not only that, but his ideas and production of their records also sets them apart because it is rare to find a Dokken album where you have to skip so many songs...easy to play it beginning to end and like them all...he does have vision and sticks to it. He should always be proud of his Dokken bands...he can scout out that talent and blend it well.
Beautiful voice! But the best bands have more than one singer. That is why background vocals sounded so good in the band. But seriously...Jeff needs to front his own band now
I was at this show..it was in Redondo beach at a club called "The Strand"...what a fun time..and yeah Jeff sang this song really well...I remember his band War and Peace also playing "It's Not Love" with him on vocals...he is a great singer :)
Holy shit, I can almost here a little Chris Cornell in his voice. Yeah Don was a great lead and I am glad the band was able to exist with him, but with things the way they are now, Jeff, George, and Mick should hit the road. I would pay to see that.
I think Jeff is twice the vocalist Don Dokken is. I bet he's twice the personality as well. Very good vocals and I like it very much, good job and I like this particular version.
Jeff with this performance has proved his worthiness as one of the premier voices in classic rock. Unbelievably powerful my friend!!! If you listen close you can hear reverberated two tone sequential retro sequences. Spot on my friend!!!
