What sucks is when you do all the careful measurements and then a stupid joist or duct work are in the way so you have to adjust it by almost a foot.

Awesome tutorial man! Great information, and easy to follow. This video is like a Christmas present for me, and very timely. I have a 5.2.2 using front height speakers, and am going to change it to 5.2.2 with overheads. Staying with 5.2.2 because I have a smaller home theater room. I want to go with overheads so it will be more of an authentic cinema experience. Thanks much for the video, I WILL be using it for the overhead placement in my room.

I just laid all 8 of mine at equal distances across the entire ceiling, mounting the rear and front ceiling speakers 2ft ahead of the rear surrounds, and front L/R. Keeping them inline. And the middle 3 speakers directly above the MLP, and the front height centre directly above the centre speaker, which happens to be directly inline with the V.O.G channel. Because it’s all symmetrical if you will. I would say however, as many know anyway, I wouldn’t try to follow Dolby’s guidelines to the letter, not only does it not suite most people living space, you can’t forget your not just doing it for Dolby. Your trying to cater for dts and Auro aswell. 👍🏻

Just want to say thanks for information. I’m 58 and 80% paralyzed from the chest down. I had a 3 - 60” Pioneer Elite Plasma and Denon Speaker set up exactly 1 year ago. I have a electric stair chair so I live and sleep upstairs. At 10:00 am the alarms went off followed by my sister yelling to get out the whole house in flames. Smoke and flames broke through my floor and crawled to the door but breath at all. I dove down the stairs head first , landed at bottom unconsciously.The house was coming down when a firefighting team did a “ Last life sweep”. They found me, but they couldn’t see either and low oxygen alarms where going off everywhere. They did CPR on me and started my heart and breathing but it stopped again in ambulance so they stopped all traffic and did an Er procedure on the road and Kickstarted me again. I was in ACOMA for 3 weeks and 3 months at UNC CHAPEL HILL BURN CENTER. Our new house should be finished being rebuilt in February 2020 and my upstairs has a man cave 24’ X 14’ all for me remake a media room. Thanks again. William Sturman

This video is well-timed I was just researching this! To questions if you'd be so kind. Depending on what degree angle you are shooting for you physically angle the speaker toward the listening position? My sofa is unfortunately against the back wall so should I essentially mount my rear Atmos as side Atmos and program them that way? I have a Denon 3400 h
@ThatHomeTheaterDude
@ThatHomeTheaterDude 5 лет назад
Most atmos speakers can be angled either with their woofer/ tweeter or both. if you have a fixed (not pointable) speaker then having them directly overhead or even up high on the wall will work. i would say max bring them down 1ft if you want. That way you get separation between rear surrounds

Hi, wondering whether you could give me an advice. Planning to install some ceiling speakers. My room is 10 feet width by 13 1/2 feet length (wall to wall measurement). Using a 100 inch projector requires an optimal distance of almost 10 feet which requires me to position the couch close to the end. Currently, running 5.1 setup and planning to install some ceiling speaker. Would you suggest I install 4 ceiling speaker or 2 speaker. If I go for the 4 speaker setup, I would be force to install the 2 set ceiling speaker almost directly on top of the couch (90 degrees) and the other two sets around 35 degrees in front as I do not have enough space behind the couch as its too close to the back already. Hope to hear some advice from you. Many thanks..

I have a 7.1.6 system. My Atmos speakers are Dali Altecos speakers positioned at the top of the side walls facing the listening area. The Front and Rears are positioned at 45 degrees in front of and behind the main listening area. The Middle Atmos speakers are at 90 degrees (each side of our listening area). All six of the Atmos speakers are positioned quite close together because I followed the Dolby guidelines. I could easily move the Front Atmos speakers several further away. This would make the front and rears at different distances and different angles to the listening position but I would adjust the distances and levels in the AVR. Would it be OK to move the Fronts further away to give a wider and "longer" Atmos soundstage, or is there no point? Thank you for your help.
@ThatHomeTheaterDude
@ThatHomeTheaterDude 2 года назад
think concentric circles around you horizontally and then a hemisphere from you to the atmos in your room. that visual should make all of this super easy. or just put them where you want. its not super complex and wont ruin the system if youre off a few inches
@Jacob-pr5cd
@Jacob-pr5cd 4 года назад
What if you can do all in wall speakers in a 7.1.2 system except for the rear? The rear has to be ceiling mounted but that ceiling is 1.5ft lower than the atmos speakers (because of box ceiling). Is that still doable with adjustable tweeters or would it make the entire system flawed? I know the rear should be ear level but not really a choice
@ThatHomeTheaterDude

i think having the tweeter and driver aimable will help out the most in that situation. Klipsch has the pro series that you can aim both the tweeter and driver. Contact Dreamedia home theaters to get some of those

I have a doubt. In our small 5.1.2 home theater having dimensions of 16x12x9 feet, we placed two rows of seats, the second row is right up the back end of the absorber wall with a feet gap from the wall and this is on a riser of 1 feet. The first row is 5 feet from the same back wall just after the riser ends. We had our two Atmos speakers placed 6 feet from the back wall. Is this right? By this math, I calculate close to 40° Angle. Please advise 🙏🏻

I fully understand the angles and everything with placing the speakers for Atmos, but is there any correlation to how the rear ceiling speakers in a setup should be compared to the rear surrounds? I was about to ask about just this yesterday and out of no where came this video answering most of my questions! You are awesome! My only question then is, can my in ceiling speakers be placed against the wall, both front and back? I have an I-beam that comes down and a vent after that so I can’t put my speakers that far ahead. I think the angles still work since my ceilings are short but I would literally have to install them against the back wall and against the I-beam to still follow as much as possible the Dolby diagram... Think this is OK? Edit: second question. My staircase on the right side will make it impossible to buy in wall speakers it appears. But I can do so for the rear... think that if I mix the speakers up in this fashion I will regret it? Else I would have to install the right surround about a foot up from the floor at most and I doubt that’s a good thing to do....
@tkcdac
@tkcdac 4 года назад
Speakers in a smaller room are a best spot available, You don't want the speakers aimed over your head, but as much of an angle as you can to your face. If this doesn't work, small foam v-wedges are available for this purpose and also isolate the speaker as well. On my smaller speakers, I had a ball mount drilled into the wall to allow me to get a strange funky angle that would be impossible otherwise. Rule of thumb, if you cant see the ear from the speaker, its not going to provide the direction-ality you want. My theater is criticized for not having my rear speakers more level, but up top. These people fail to understand that my kids sit in front of the back chair on the floor. No eyesight to drive.. no effect. As a result of best case scenario, all people in room get the surround effect. Also: when in doubt, play with it, and whatever you like best is the best.
@Lafiro
@Lafiro 4 года назад
tkcdac My surround aides could be in wall but installed no more than a foot from the floor. I don’t see anything positive coming from me doing this but at the same time, it’s the staircase causing this issue and I can’t do anything about it. One thing tells me just put regular speakers, the other is my wife telling me in wall or nothing...... ugh
@tkcdac
@tkcdac 4 года назад
@@Lafiro There are some great in-wall that have a very severe tweeter directional movement. I have not seen any that go over 45 degrees though. I hope you find your compromise. It sounds like giving too much in the speaker department, would defeat your entire purpose. Good luck on that uphill battle. Perhaps when its time to get that wife vehicle, you have a bargaining chip? :)
@Lafiro
@Lafiro 4 года назад
tkcdac that’s coming up quick for the wife though. Purchasing the speakers and rest of the system I plan by end of next year. It’s just that this month/beginning of next marks the last of any possible wire runs for speaker placements so as of now everything is being run for a 9.3.6 system. May just do 9.4.6 just to be safe for more subwoofer placement options. It’s just that one speaker that boggles me that if I do in wall, it will be a foot off the ground. Below all listeners ears. Then the same thing has to happen for the left speaker to keep continuity. I just don’t know how bad that would be, if at all....... I wouldn’t want to only have two speakers external and then everything else in wall (except for the front stage).... I don’t think it will look right or sound right maybe...... this is where I ask here for options.
@tkcdac

Don’t know for sure but I always understood it to be the transformer and capacitors in the Amp. If they can’t keep up they can pull more from the wall tripping breakers. Another thing to look at is how you have your speakers wired. Are you doing any non standard connections that can increase the load on the Amp?

Nope all are regular connections my mistake I think it was to have everything connected to a single power surge from a single wall outlet. I connected just the amp to a separate wall outlet and that seems to be working for now. No tripping when high volume movies.

Yes, but most room correction systems aren't 100% perfect, so be careful of relying exclusively on it. Always check the settings afterwards and tweak as needed. But the good news is that both Dolby Atmos and DTS-X are quite forgiving and flexible. So just try and get it as close to the Dolby recommendations as is practical for your room, and then go from there. Very few people have a perfect room, unless they build it specifically for Dolby Atmos from the get go...

I am very confused as to what the math is for. With your angle meter and a laser pointer what is the point of the math. You use the angle meter to angle your laser pointer put the laser pointer at the area of the ceiling and then take measurements from that point to the edge of the room to make sure that each speaker is equidistant from the sides and symmetrical within the room.I’m not trying to be a troll, I am just wondering what the math is actually four. I am not a fan of placing atmos speakers in the ceiling. It limits the Atmos effect. I prefer front and back to get the full Atmos effect. If you ever seen the Dolby Atmos Render Model that engineers use, there is no Ceiling mounted speakers, just the entire room. Let your speaker breath, instead of limiting them to a confined space.
@dan_hitchman007
@dan_hitchman007 3 года назад
You actually want your Top Middle overhead speakers in front of your MLP about a foot. Don't have them directly above your head. Your hearing is very poor at picking out sound locations directly above or directly behind your head. Pro sound designers also recommend that the distance between the left and right overheads should be no more than 4-5 feet apart, not in line with your main left and right speakers. That's how pro sound mixing rooms are normally set up and that's where these soundtracks are created.
@ThatHomeTheaterDude
@ThatHomeTheaterDude 3 года назад
I disagree. Hearing above and behind are fine. We were designed to hear animals and dangers from above and behind us just fine. Cant argue with caveman design of our ears
@dan_hitchman007
@dan_hitchman007 3 года назад
@@ThatHomeTheaterDude I'm just going off of what the pro audio engineers discuss about psychoacoustic properties of the human hearing system and how it gets confused with direct overhead (right above your head) or direct rear sound (right behind your head). You want to compensate for this "defect" in our sound perception in an audio installation.
@Renrondog
@Renrondog Год назад
unless you have bookshelf style speakers this won't work well for Atmos. Here's why. At 50* with in ceiling speakers you are now sitting 50* off axis of the speaker (which is most likely pointing straight down) You will hear almost none of the treble at that angle because of how tweeters and high frequencies disperse sound. And they are waaaaay too far off to the side (again off axis). Better layout would be similar to an actual theater design where the Atmos overhead speakers are closer to the center of the room. Look up the design specs for yourself before you cut your ceiling holes.
@VoyagerGC
@VoyagerGC 4 года назад
that is not VoG :) Atmos does not have a 3rd layer - only Auro3D deals in absolute! :P so... don't mess with people's minds. that position 9 is basically a pair of atmos top heights :) not a single center speaker like in Auro3D VoG
@ThatHomeTheaterDude
@ThatHomeTheaterDude 4 года назад
.......... i think you are mistaken the idea of the drawing. In any case neither of the speakers will be direct overhead. They will be out to either side of your head. The middle speaker represents the middle heights. You can do vog if you put on right above your head.
@VoyagerGC
@VoyagerGC 4 года назад
@@ThatHomeTheaterDude no, I am not mistaken. "problem" is you were talking about atmos and threw vog in discussion and that created confusion :) its ok, I understood what you were trying to separate, but best practice is to not mix 2 concepts but focus on each other separately, since there is quite a dif between one codec and the other. 10x for the reply.
