Did you really expect more out of a Disney movie? They don't care about picture or sound quality - unfortunately.

Active mix isn't exactly a meaningful approach - what I mean is, if the height speaker is playing exactly the same track as the ear level speakers, it isn't producing an immersive experience. I'd say meaningful immersive experience includes DIFFERENT and DISTINGUISHABLE sound channels from each speaker. Unfortunately, lots of blu ray atmos mix are kind of bland and similar with each speaker.

That's a really cool feature. You should add this when you do your 4k reviews.

Dude use Overlord . The scene in the beginning when the hero jumps out of the plane would sell receivers on the spot .

It was actually one of your more recent videos with the Trinnov guru, that convinced me of the final setup now to be used in my room, which will accommodate all three formats. Atmos, DTS-X & Auro 3D. Placement, speaker selection, amplification and processor, not to mention subwoofers.. Very expensive hobby/addiction!

Hi Shane, this is very informative. Could you plesae review the same atmos mixes with one of the online streaming services like max, disney+ , amazon ? I understand there are objects sound in uhd blu-ray. Just curious on what is happening with the streaming services? I have four top ceiling atmos speakers and I don't see any movement happening between these speakers. If I run 2 ceiling or 4 , the results are same. Same sound is coming from front and rear left or right speakers. No objects moving. btw, I have denon 4400h receiver. thanks for your consideration and time.

Definitely include this during your reviews as i think it's super cool to see how well the sound mix was made. I don't hear atmos effects in my system .... but that's because its a 5.2 haha. Two in-ceiling speakers are in my future tho just prioritized getting good bass from seat to seat over height effects that will only be noticed in good mixes.

How are you able to stream and get the outputs to the Trinnov? What hardware and connections are you making in addition to software?

I recently upgraded my 2009 Sony 7.1 to an Onkyo tx-nr686 and was blown away frim it that I’m literally rewatching every film I have and been putting to good use my 4k movies as well after going with the 5.1.2.

When I first installed atmos in my theater room, I was a little let down, till I watched movies without it and realized how much it really adds to the emersion. It wasnt the same feeling I got hearing dolby digital for the first time but something else that was still good just not as easily identifiable.

Will be getting a demo of a trinnov next weekend. Will be paying attention to the Atmos channels most of all.

What do you think of the Auro 3D Upmixer "Auromatic" There are some good videos out there that produces good results.

When will you do complete review of the trinnov ?

Interesting, so those dynamic objects are mostly static and are placed at or near the channel. Look at the bed channels. But sometimes they do move a bit. In the MAD MAX section you can see how the height channels are active but the objects are mostly not moving at all. Will definitely want a more detailed reviews on this.

I have a question does the trinnov altitude 16 has earc or arc ? How do connect your apple tv or any media player has one port hdmi I know 4k player and the Zappiti pro have deferent hdmi one for video and one for audio and if i want to connect an axbox or ps5 game consol have only one port and should connect to a tv to get the benefits of hdmi 2.1 how it will work fo the trinnov and any news on trinnov hdmi boards and is worth it the trinnov altitude 16 with no audio return channel? I have a Marantz SR7012 reciver with two poweramps from Emotiva. For me it really depends on what movie I watching. Everest, Ford vs Ferrari, Ready player one, Oblivion, Passengers, Godzilla are some movies I think have a very good atmos soundstage. The new Terminator has very good atmos aswell.

I use a datasat LS10 13.2 setup w/AURO3d upmixer. . Fantastic upmixing . The height channels are very active . I’ve tried the atmos configuration but find the auro3d upmixing vastly superior.

What brand of receivers use this brand of processor? Or is this Trinnov system just an analysis tool?

I love my atmos dtsx setup I have. Some movies are better than others of course. I have always tried to understand the "true" difference between 5.1 & atmos/dtsx. Hopefully you can explain or send me a link to the explanation. So, when explaining plain 5.1, the surround field is created via speaker output %, audio pans, delay; correct? Then they say atmos/dtsx is "object based". But isn't just an "object based" system doing the same thing as a 5.1 system? Meaning you place objects in space and then the audio (via algorithms) is adjusted by output %, pan or delay to create the sound field?

Shane i use a marantz sr 7013 atmos is awsom DTS-X even better i done a master reset a short time ago and double ausom i would recoment master reset on amps over 1/2yrs old you get the sweet sound back again in fact its better dont forget older amps as well

I think atmos works especially if you run the Dolby atmos demo disc. However movies are totally different. It all depends on how they mix sound for the movie. I found they use the top layer for music mostly, I also think there just plain lazy or under the gun to get the movie done so compromise the mix.

I like to see a app like this for other atmos/ dts:x systems. (avr's amps. ect) There a app like it out there?

They need to make that feature separate so others can buy and hook it up to there Home theater receiver‘s to see if the Atmos speakers have much activity like in this video, this would be really cool.

I have a Pioneer Elite reciever and a 5.1.4 setup (with multiple subs) and my experience with Mad Max and Mulan 2020 is virtually the same as yours.

Pardon my ignorance but just having speakers working doesn't mean a surround experience... its the separation that's important ie different sounds from each speaker?

Not all movies were created for dolby atmos n dts x, the oldies one never were designed 4 height channels, i have enough with dolby true hd and dts ma for the mpment

Altitude 32, love it. Have to update when I get home tomorrow from the summer place. Some movies have more than others. The neural:X uomixer also works great for older titles with 5.1 or 7.1..

But does it differentiate between music soundtracks and actual objects?

I hate the Disney Mulan, but maybe the physical édition will include a better audio mix ? Were midway and MadMax on physical copies ?

That is pretty awesome! I really like a quiet place for Atmos demoing! Midway is a great one too. That Trinnov processor seems about as close as you can get to actual Dolby hardware. Great video!

I thought you had call of duty modern warfare. That is stated as atmos on the dolby site.

You should really get a gaming console and star wars battlefront 2 The atmos demo content sounds amazing Imagine controlling the activity in the speakers and visualizing it. That single video is worth the meager cost of the console. Can get it used cheap. Xbox one x for example.

I have a Yamaha CX-A5200 .

I currently have a crappy Denon AVR that has Atomos, but only in a 5.1.2 configuration so I've elected to keep the 4 surrounds because hanging height speakers seems like a huge pain for little gain at the moment. I hate the receiver though and want to go back to Pioneer and hopefully I will soon. I'll definitely be getting one that supports 7.1.4. I just did a brief check on Pioneer's stuff and now they have some IMAX sound technology. Seriously, I'd rather watch a movie in any other auditorium than an IMAX auditorium. They seriously have bad sound systems. Two giant surrounds, one in each corner instead of a proper array. And they just play things super loud with the world's shittiest EQ because most audiences thing loud = better. I'm sad that IMAX is now trying to get into the home market. Anyway I digress. I don't feel I need separate components for my medium-sized room, but if I did I'd use real threater stuff which can be cheaper than home theater stuff, believe it or not.

This feature is amazing... you actually picked out some movies that most consumers know they already have a good Atmos mix. A movie that should have been tested is Detective Pikachu.

Please do it this again but with some 90s móvies titles, as Godzilla 98, the profesional, the 5 element, batman returns, etc

Does this mean that high-end receivers may or not be doing their jobs correctly? A lot of comments on the lack of Atmos activity on a lot of forums.

I currently am using an Anthem AVM60 for a 5.2.4 setup. I definitely have heard a more dynamic sound from my pre/pro set up than from my previous Denon 4400h. I have also noticed that when watching DTS:X:movies like The incredible hulk and Blues Brothers, the sound is better than most of my Dolby Atmos mixes. What do you think?

Hi Shane ! Your videos are very good and informative...U r lucky to have a great setup with Trinnov. Myself having Marantz SR8012 AVR with external amplication for base 5 channels.I have configured to support Atmos,Dts X and Auro3d. Based on my observations,the Atmos height effects greatly depends upon how it is mixed according to the requirement of movie scene.Some are great in that category and some are not that good. Example:Aquaman has wonderful sound track with a great amount of bass to test our subs performance but the height information are comparatively very less I feel. Most of Atmos tracks are very good but still the heights info are comparatively less. In case of Auro3d tracks... the heights are engaged more compartively.Even their Auromatic upmixers does a beautiful job of upmixing. In case of dts X ,the sound tracks are more dynamic and powerful ,but less refined compared to Atmos.

Overall, it's disappointing that Trinnov didn't use color coding for the objects with outlines for speakers so one can more easily tell which object is having which effect on which speakers as a busy scene just shows all the speakers lit up and you have to guess at what object might be producing which sound. It's a bit like a spectrum analyzer display on 2-channel stereos of old. It's cool looking, but doesn't offer as much information as you'd like outside of a single instrument playing. Saying a Sony receiver wouldn't be as effective at decoding a soundtrack is pretty much an advertisement without proof, IMO. A Sony won't decode as many channels, but I've seen and heard no evidence anywhere that a Trinnov does a "better" job with 7.1.4 than a Sony or Marantz or whatever. People don't generally buy a Trinnov to do just 7.1.4, after all. It's the ONLY processor I know of that can do all 34 Atmos channels and so it's generally desired by people with larger ambition than just 7.1.4. I'm sure there's plenty of millionaires that wouldn't bat an eye to buy one just for the cachet (gotta have the "best" or "most expensive" just to prove you're rich, after all), but I certainly would only buy one if I intended to use more than 15-channels, probably significantly more than 15-channels at that (i.e. there are 15-ch alternatives now at a fraction of the price) or if I needed to use some esoteric channels only Trinnov supports (center-left, center-right, etc.).

Great video, thanks! I use a Denon AVR-X4500H. Usually, I hear height channels used where they make sense in most mixes. Honestly, it doesn't surprise me at all that a film like Midway has more overhead sound activity than Mulan. Air battles tend to have more sound from above than ground battles.

300$ sony avr dh790 can easily render atmos perfectly, don't just think that if it is cheap it has to be crap. sony are the pioneers in av industry and they know how to make a quality product.it mainly depends on speaker placements, level matching,type of atmos speakers etc. compared to the quality of atmos we can get from an avr, processors are way to overpriced for less gain.

I’m curious how changing mixers or using the upmixers effects the use of the height channels.

I have been using an Emotiva BasX MC1 processor in a 7.2.4 speaker configuration with three separate BasX amplifiers. Sounds a lot better than the Pioneer AVR I had. Just wish my ceiling was higher. It's only 6 and a half feet high. (Basement).

How does the brand of receiver effect dolby atmos? If the receiver supports Dolby atmos doesn't it actually use the dolby processing? Maybe in the dolby up mixer. But once again its using the dolby processing. What would matter more based on brand is how much power actually gets output to each speaker in a home theater configuration. When you push 11 speakers all powered by the av processor the power output to each speaker will drop dramatically. And thats even on the high end at receivers. If you want a good 3d sound mix and this has nothing to do with dolby. Play the last of us 2 or ghost of tsushima on ps4. This games have 3d audio. And even on just using a dtx or dolby up mixer you can hear the benefits of 3d sound. This games have location based sound. As well as actually sound engineers mixing this sounds for 3d audio. It sounds amazing. You will notice that you don't need just high over head sound. But actual location based sound and sound optimized based on the on screen room. Thats the next level. And finally something that should just work with what you already have.

With Mulan, most of what was happening was at ground level, so you'd expect the majority of the sound to come from the bed channels, and the heights were only really used when the arrows fired up into the sky, so to me they looked as if they were using Atmos to tie sounds into the screen action and did it in a more realistic fashion *the other movies had more going on above head level)/ so had more height info to deliver). I guess they could have added music up there but they may have masked the sound pf the arrows.

Sony DH790 here and I felt that dig lol. I got the whole Sony speaker lineup with it on Black Friday as it was the best chance of finally getting an affordable HT just under 1K. I recently got SVS elevations for a 5.1.2 and for most movies I only seem to notice supporting sound or ambiance, only movie I def noticed height effect as distinct was in Shazam with demon voices in cave. I think it's my layout I have them up front, and I didn't realize until I looked at Dolby brochure from SVS that for 5.1.2 it should be on sides, or on ceiling. But, the room layout dosen't allow for that(no side walls, and no flat low ceiling). But considering how the average Joe like myself would set this up in a living room, idk how else it could work out besides jamming large audio equipment into a small cramped bedroom. Where I live we don't have basements to host as a movie room like up north.

That's so cool. I have a cheap 5.1.2 AVR, I hadn't heard anything negative about MMFR, but I've been singing it's praises. Everytime I watch it, I hear the in his narration over my head. So it's definitely a pick to show someone what overheads can do. I wonder if people just aren't level matching and what not.

I have a $200 Sony receiver (5.1.2) and there is just a pile of blahness for most movies. Upgrade soon.

How is the atmos activation with other Disney titles? I THINK Mulan didn't have much going on because it was mixed for a commercial theater, then released as a stream without enough time to remix the soundtrack properly for home use. Usually movies have differently mixed soundtracks for consumer use then what the commercial theater usually sees. I'm guessing they did a bit of a rush job on this one, perhaps when it gets officially released on a disc, it'll get better.

Hey awesome feature. I think most people who think atmos is dissapointing don't have well calibrated the sound system with a SPL metter. In many rooms Audyssey and Dirac calibrations set ridicoulous leves to the overhead channels. After the SPL calibration and manually speakers distances measured my experience with a 5.1.2 system and a Denon 4500H is very good with the correct mixed atmos. People also have to be conscient that atmos is not only overhead effects, best atmos tracks offer a complete inmersive experience during the movie with good overhead effects.

No need to ding Disney for lack of atmos in Mulan. There was nothing happening above the main action. It's not like they had planes flying overhead like in Midway. Atmos effects just for the sake of having them would make it sound unnatural.

You are seeing all the channels active because you have them! Not because they are necessary. Master and Commander - you can hear overhead sound with just 2 front speakers!

I hate that they are buying up all these studios now. Though I will say Mandalorian looks and sounds fantastic for a stream on Disney plus. This object viewer is pretty awesome though!

I would like to see that run with Jupiter Ascending. Which remains the best sounding Atmos mix I have heard so far.

Perfect example of why you do NOT need more than 4-6 channels, total. Most content comes from the L and R. Most of your budget should therefore be devoted to these 2 channels. Putting 10+ speakers in an enclosed room is a disaster for sound quality, because the speakers ‘compete’ with each other. Note that none of the room EQ systems even try to calibrate when multiple channels are playing. If you are designing a new system, be very careful and try to allocate ~80% of your budget the front main speakers.

Hey, I have a $400 Sony receiver which I love! It's perfect for my apartment.

I have the poor man's X3700h with 4 SVS Prime elevations and I get quite a bit of Atmos on my movies. Some are definitely better than others.

Disney is by far one of the THE WORST studios for audio soundtracks. Ever since Age of Ultron on Blu-ray, Disney has been butchering their mixes. Some say it's to make them "soundbar or TV speaker friendly" rather than mixing for high caliber, high end home theaters as studios used to do. Very disappointing!

Don't just look at the Trinnov display, also try switching your lower speakers off completely (eg, via power amp) to listen to what it is exactly that's coming out of those top speakers. Sometimes it's just music. But Godzilla KotM is a good example of Atmos used well.

I have Denon AVR x-6500H. I do hear high channels, but it all depends on the movies. Overall I love Atmos which produces more wrap around sound experience than non Atmos. Agree that Mulan Atmos track is not good. Good bass but high channel sound is almost absent. Disney movie soundtracks are usually bad.

An "Active Mix" doesn't mean a "discrete mix". Why should Atmos use overhead channels in Mulan if there's nothing happening above their heads outdoors??? I have to think the reviewer is a bit clueless as what makes a "great" mix. Disney has its own issues (with so called print-through 7.1.4 or 7.1.2 limited soundtracks), but complaining that all the channels aren't on ALL the time is absurd. Short of a bird in an open field, what are you going to hear overhead? An arrow flies overhead. Hey! There's the height channels.... Then he brings in the $200 MILLION price tag as if that means they should have UFOs hovering overhead because it cost a lot of money and so viewers should get to hear a LOT of overhead sounds no matter how silly their purpose....

8:26 What's even "worse" is that the yellow balls are not rally moving at all, i.e. they are just putting them in fixed positions and seem using them as if they are extra bed channels or even just replacements for bed channels. I hope by now (a year on) this practice has stopped ...
