Joni Mitchell was an artist (painter) before she was a songwriter. She does all her own album covers. She has devised more than 100 ways to tune a guitar - ditto for a dulcimer. She plays piano like a concert pianist. She has morphed from one album to the next through varying genres of music.. The artist formerly known as Prince said many times that her lyrics were the best poetry of our times, and should be required reading in schools. After her stroke 5 years ago, she had to relearn all her own songs by watching videos of her old performances. At the age of 80, she is still painting, still writing amazing songs - and still performing - and she's done it all without needing fake boobs, fake hair fake nails. Her work stands on its own merit.
@@wandamundy1759 You can like (and dislike) who you like, but there are videos and pictures of Dolly Parton from BEFORE her stint on the Porter Wagner show when she had, literally, no money, and the big boobs were there in all their glory. I promise, coming from backwoods Appalachian mountains as she did, she didn't have money for a boob job. Just saying. :)
@@wandamundy1759You can praise Joni, who is very talented, without needing to drag another woman. Dolly is extremely talented and a great storyteller in her lyrics which have made many of her songs timeless like this one. Dolly's outward appearance, many people wear false nails etc, does not have any bearing her on her wonderful talents of singing, writing, producing or acting. Dolly herself has spoken of dealing with a very male dominated industry when she started out and the way people tried to demean or dismiss her based on her looks. She even joked about it took a lot of money to look that cheap. However, it doesn't detract from her talents and you should do better in 2024.
I think that alot of people don't know how talented Dolly really is. She plays a butt load of instruments, she is an amazing songwriter and her voice is like that of an angel. I have seen her show and she is one of the best I have ever seen. And I have seen alot of shows. Shania doesn't admire her for nothing. As for Shania.. This clip shows her really singing. Not acting. I am surprised at how good she sounds when she (just sings). Both are very good, but Dolly is a true gift.
+JOE OHHBOY I grew up on Hank, Bob Wills, Ferlin Husky, Jimmy Rogers, Dolly, Loretta, Tammy, Porter, The Statlers and many more of the country greats. Grew to love some more than others. Dolly is in the more than category. One does not stay at the top and in demand unless one has talent. Dolly, more than many knows how to market herself. One of my favorite quotes from her is this: "It takes money to look this cheap."
This is sweet! It breaks my heart that Shania was crying at the end because of what she went through as a child! She is one of the most beautiful people in the world ever!
Dolly has one of those voices that just flies over the music, not to mention the fact that her voice has barely changed through all of her many years of singing. Her voice is wonderful.
This song has inspired me my whole life ....Growing up way up in Northern Minnesota I understood the the importance of being warm in the winter I always had what I needed but so under stood the power of love thy neighbor as I love my self ...such a simple thing ...every year I ask my face book friends to buy just one coat to keep a child warm...I have been so blessed by there out poring of love and it means the world to me...Thank you to all my class mates of Blackduck High School the class of 1980 for all of your love and support over the years ...We are all so blessed by giving...God is so good...
Shania is the only artist in history with three albums that have sales of 10 million copies each. Her 1997 album Come on Over is still the best selling country album ever produced. Incredible talent, original, beautiful, committed and inspiring. A truly unique artist and woman with the courage and understanding to be herself, through her music and life, that's Shania Twain.
How appropriate ! The childhood of these two amazing ladies is so much alike ! They both knew poverty, hunger and being cold ! And look where they are now ! My best wishes go to both of you !
I'll tell you what, even if you don't like country music, the fact of the matter is that country singers are supremely talented. Shania and Dolly are wonderful together. I like how Dolly sang "back up" on this song, one of her signature numbers, so Shania could take center stage. Two professionals, for sure.
How can anyone not love these beautiful talented women. Dolly is truly a living legend. Think this is one of her best songs out of so many not to mention what a great person these 2 angels are. 💓
Can't listen to this song without tears... so beautiful! Shania's not the only one that loves this one! lol... I tell everyone I have a favorite Dolly song for my Mom and for my Dad... My family lost the two of them in September 2014, just nine hours apart... It was unbelievable, I know... My Mom and Dad raised seven children, with my Dad an auto mechanic, and my Mom a homemaker, with odd jobs outside the home from time to time. I have three sisters... Our Mom would make matching dresses for all of us when we were little. "Coat of Many Colors" has been my song for Mom, since the first time I heard it... And "Hard Candy Christmas", my Dad's. Every Christmas from the time we were little, he would remind us that his family was so poor, that was all he ever got for Christmas... I miss them both so very much, and especially this time of year, but I know they are together still, after seventy years of marriage, the spring before we lost them both... Merry Christmas, everyone!
They all sound so great together, and neat that this song has such deep meaning for Dolly & Shania especially, because of their childhood. And very gracious of Dolly to let Shania sing lead while she sang harmony. Classy people!
"Coat of Many Colors" is a song written and recorded by American country music singer Dolly Parton, which has been described on a number of occasions as her favorite song she has written. It was released in October 1971 as the second single and title track from the album Coat of Many Colors. She composed the song in 1969, while traveling with Porter Wagoner on a tour bus. She recorded the song in April 1971, making it the title song for her Coat of Many Colors album. The song reached #4 on the U.S. country singles charts.
Dolly and Shania are two of my favorite entertainers. It was a privilege to see them both on the same stage. These are two of the people whose reputations are squeaky clean. Congrats to them both. They are a couple of my few heros. Bless them both.
now, this is grand fun!! Two great singers, beautiful lady's,good song writing !! I don't know witch one I love the best??! They are both, to good to be true! Love this performance greatly. Now this can make a man weep!! Pure beauty, wow, what a lovely performance!! I'm impressed out of my mind.Love,love,love.Shania is one of the most classy women I've EVER seen!!! And so is the great Dolly Parton!!!
This is recorded roof Dolly has the biggest heart in country music today! Here she is stepping back and watching as someone else sings her famous song she wrote and sang into a hit. She complimented Shanai at just the right places and humbly let her take all the attention. She is living pure country Americana but more importantly she is a beautiful person with a beautiful heart.
I'm 66yrs old and have never been a country music fan but because I grew up poor this song brings me to my knees in tears, I think that's why The Little Drummer Boy is my favorite Christmas song too. I guess I can relate to doing without and having nothing.
This is a humble and respectful tribute. I was a Shania fan but I've loved Dolly for years. I wish I could've been there. Oprah was awesome by letting Shania introduce her idol.
I've always loved Dolly. From what I have seen of her. She has a heart of gold. A beautiful voice, beautiful person. Inside and out. I believe that she genuinely cares about people. Plastic or not. She's a good person. This woman is a human dynamo. She's the real deal. Shania is beautiful and has a fantastic voice as well. Love them both.
Hello im from Chile,,,i liked what you wrote i studied english and always i try to read in english and your words are very interesting....greetings from Chile , my country...
@@melvinmurkelson7369 yup she does at that... she proves that it’s the love of God inside that counts... along with confessing with your mouth that Jesus Christ is Lord over all. Dolly is nothing without Jesus, I am nothing without Jesus and you Melvin are everything but only if you have Jesus inside and believe that he came to this earth, lived, died to save us from our sins and rose again... triumphant over death.
@@T410ce This is the problem I have with folks who have the attitude you have about religion. You feel everyone must have some kind of relationship with Jesus or God in order to be fulfilled. While I am an atheist I fully support your right to believe as you see fit, yet religious folks so very often won't extend me the same courtesy. There is something very wrong with that picture.
Now that is a thing a beauty! Two absolutely gorgeous women, singing the absolutely heck out of a beautiful song. Tough to imagine it getting much (any) better than that! :)
BRAVOOOOO !!! SUPEEEEER !!! REALLY THEY ARE QUEENS OF THE COUNTRY !!! ALL WE - ALL BULGARIANS WAIT YOUR FANTASTIC CONCERTS IN SOFIA !!! ALL WE LOVE YOU ENDLEEEEESS !!! ALWAYS WITH A LOT OF LOVE AND LIGHT Your eternal fan Nadya Mirkova and friends FROM SOFIA - BULGARIA - EUROPE
Its so pure lyric. Touched the deepest heart. About love give thanks 4 evry little thing in our life. And believe or not, the miracles will come out after that.
@@kellywatts248 Kelly, I find it extremely difficult to choose just one ,so my favourites include hank Thompson, hank snow, lefty frizell , George Jones don't Williams and Jim reeves . but I think you would agree they are just the tip of a mighty iceberg of wonderful country singers that we will sadly never see or hear the likes of again . I feel so blessed that I have been able to accumulate a massive collection of most of the great artists music to remind me of what we once had
@@kellywatts248 Kelly, I live in Hobart ,Tasmania ,Australia , and have traveled to Nashville , Orlando ,and branson Missouri, from 1979 to 2009 ,in a period when most of the greats were still alive and performing, I feel privelaliged to have seen many of my favourites both male and female and for that I will be forever greatfull
I love Dolly like so many people do, but she never acts like she is better than anyone else! Love that about her, she is an angel on earth, she's given her all to the people she loves to sing for!
I always wanted to hear this song... ! This is a dream that came through... Growing up in Poverty here in Trinidad and Tobago... Wearing rags and people's clothes as a kid... God tuned it around... I became a Tailor and Fashion Designer... At age 18+
Oh my lord...identical keys, identical notes...so much like one voice. I didn't know that was even possible. Well, as old as I am, there is still time to be amazed! What a beautiful rendition! And how lucky to have Allison jump in! OMG! Wish I had seen this one years ago, but then, it was on Opra. I might have to start watching that show!
love Dolly Parton and her music grew up with it .it always takes me back to a time in my life that's makes me always wonder where did I go wrong .Tnx Dolly
i ve always loved shania's deep throaty voice. her songs always celebrated the power of women. Dolly has a lot going for her. good looks, talent, beautiful personality. I loved the Christmas movies that came out about her life. Jennifer Nettles played her mother awesomely. And the little girl that played Dolly was great.
Beautiful and talented women, all three of them. Message behind the song is 100% true. Something that someone put their heart soul and mind to is more precious than gold or real jems. It was given and/or made for you and with time and effort. When someone makes you something they are showing that they love you especially if it's a quilt or piece of art because they may only have enough to get by and are doing the best they can.
All I can say is WOW...super beautiful, brought tears to my eyes. I love both their voices so much and combined into a duets its that much more amazing
Dolly looks like a dream a sickle. I love Orange. Coupled with her voice, Makes her #1 on my Country Music List! I would love to sing with her one day!
This song always makes me cry, it brings me back to my childhood with my Great grandparents and grandparents grandparents. We even had a outhouse and no heat except from the Woodstock. We hunted, foraged, gardened most of our food. I miss it very much yes we were poor but I was at my happiest
This is my favorite Dolly Parton song. Shania is my favorite female country singer with Dolly coming up right behind her. Also love Reba, Loretta, and on and on!
I've never cared for Shania's pop-y music too much. I prefer her like this, on a guitar, singing real country music. I think she's great! And gorgeous beyond words.
