It's kind of amusing that anyone who is guilty would be offered that sort of deal.. plead guilty to manslaughter, three years prison time and give up the body, then, refuse it! He did not read those murder books enough!! That's a very lenient sentence, I can't remember if I've ever heard of such a light plea agreement.
As usual with these shows they only tell half the story. Books give more detail. This selfish asshole made Nina's life a living hell and when she had enough and started a new life he killed her.

Even if he would have apologized at that time that trial was held (and not afterwards seemingly eons later) that he was sorry and that it came forth out of him not being so good at filing (his) girlfriends, filing his woman, it still might have raised some sympathy for him and at least people would have had a choice, they then could have thought he was just nuts.
