She's always been a fighter of a gymnast. She was so young in the 96 games...I'm a year younger than her and I remember thinking-"she's amazing- I hope I get as great as her". And now all these years later & knowing & remember all she went through after, with family & coaches. God it must have been so hard for her.
At least she won the 1998 Goodwill Games, which back then, was like a world championships pretty much. She and Vanessa were definitely two of the top 5 gymnasts that year.
luminita was a great match and couch for her. it only all the drama that happened with her parents never transpired she would have been able to maintain her training, improved, maybe even stayed healthy, qualified for the olympics. she was always a medal contender for beam IMO. but thats just too many "what ifs" so we may never know
Maddie Goldfeld she was definitely overweight when she first attempted to come back. They didn’t mean she was overweight at this particular competition.
You need glasses. She’s in no way out of shape. It’s called muscle. An out of shape person couldn’t do this floor exercise. An out of shape person doesn’t have endurance like this.
@@kimhorton9836 Pay attention. The announcer said she WAS overweight and now has refound herself.... So no, she wasn't overweight at this point in the competition.
Oh gosh people, in 96 she was fourteen freaking years old! How many of you looked at age 18 the same way you did at age 14? She's fat in this? She looks like a perfectly healthy woman! Everyone knows training as hard as gymnasts do delays puberty a bit and then when you stop, you develop curves. For example, Nastia Liukin. And I wouldn't say Nastia looks fat, I'd say she looks great, she looks like a 20 something woman ought to look.
I agree that nobody looks the same way at 18 compared to 14, but in her case her body changed so much that it decreased her chances of continuing in gymnastics. She is not fat at all, but gymnasts are required to have a slim, lean body to be able to perform well. And she does look heavy (for a gymnast). I really admire Dominique, for coming out and defending herself against her abusers and parents, and really happy to see she moved on with her life. Unfortunately growing up, like what we see in this video, did not favor her career in gymnastics. I stil love watching her during Atlanta. She was so cute!
Why are we arguing at all about the way Moceanu looks, whether she's fat or not?? She looks amazing, not gymnast tiny anymore but still puts most women to shame. End of story.
No one said HERE. She was out of shape after taking time off and gained some weight. Not a big deal she lost it when she started working hard again. But by this meet she was.fine
Watching this and listening to the commentary now makes my blood BOIL. But now Bela and USAG are in disgrace and Dominique has her own beautiful healthy gym as well as the healthier lifestyle of the elites so there's that. Now it's time to replace the commentators, they're still doing this shit and it's not ok.
@@spanishflyIam he DEFINITELY knew they were being sexually abused by Nassar and so did Marta. Were talking some 30 years of multiple victims everyday. He was complicit. If you go along to murder someone but you're not the one that actually kills them, you're still charged as having committed murder same as the person who did.
@@Janellabelle I totally agree that if someone knows about something that is happening that should not be happening and they choose to turn their face , pretend they didn't know anything and knowingly allow it to continue, then he'll yeah they are guilty as fu@*! See, I didn't know anything about the Karoli's involvement in the Larry Nassar case. So the Karoli's knew Nassar was molesting the gymnasts? Did the gymnasts tell them?
@@spanishflyIam Martha said how in the world would they ever knew what Larry nasser had been done to those gymnasts girls when even the parents, who seemed clueless, were sitting right next to the clinic door where Larry nassar were sexually abusing those girls while conducting physical examination on them. The parents waiting outside of the room didn’t have any knowledge that sexually abusing was being done by the evil doctor Larry nassar.
Why didn't she do the triple in the first pass? She always had strong front tumbling, that first pass should have been her last pass, I think. I wish she went to Mary Tracy right after Bela. She would have been so much healthier, especially emotionally. Bela is a total quack. I think Mary Lee would have supported her to enjoy the sport whether she made it to a second Olympics or not and eased the pressure she put on herself.
Mary Lee had that reputation for years of being this upbeat and supportive coach but the ongoing scandal with Nassar definitely pulled back that facade. She supported Nassar after the allegations of sexual abuse surfaced and lots of gymnasts rightfully raked her over the coals for that. Then USA gymnastics appointed her to a top post and she continued to act like she’d been bullied or victimized when people said someone like her had no business leading anything in the sport. It’s a whole mess. USA Gymnastics is as deeply diseased an organization as you can imagine
Of course she was bigger in 2000 than she was in 1996! She wasn’t 14 anymore. She grew up! In 96 she was 4’6” 55lbs. Kerri Strug was 4’8” & very light at 19. Now I was in love with her in 96 when I was 11, I was 5’3” 130lbs. I remember watching this when I was 15, I was 6’0” 200lbs at 15 & they said that stuff about her I thought it was disgusting. When I was 16 I was 6’2” 220lbs. I’m 35 now & 6’2” 235lbs. So it just pisses me off to hear such BS from these announcers. This woman had to struggle at a very young age & we know Bella & Martha didn’t make it any easier on her. Bella & Martha had it out for her after 96 & ruined her chances. Thank you to Dominique for all the great performances & you were so elegant & beautiful when competing. If I ever seen these announcers I would deck them for being pricks. The truth has come out now about the dark side of gymnastics. Horrible you young ladies had nobody to go too.
No, they said that she WAS overweight but was now in shape in this competition. And it's true, I saw a pic of her training and she was a rolly poly. But here, she is gorgeous. BTW, in Atlanta she was 70 lbs, not 55.
An amazing gimnanst...no one can take that from her ! I hate everything that goes on in that sport ...if this is what American gimnast had to go through for a madal ...i hate to think whats going on with the romanian or russian teams...
They were hateful towards her some of it was born of jealousy. Some of it was because of her Romanian blood. She was an Olympic, world & national champion. She was a wonderful gymnast who was instrumental in helping the U.S win the first team gold medal in women's gymnastics.
I think her fans would have given her an Olympic gold medal just based on her 2000 nationals performances though! Just so sad what ended up happening after 1996. Bc, I remember watching her in that games- and I said to my parents, "She'll definitely be back at the next Olympics right?" If she had had a stable coach, things would have been so different. Either Bela or Luminita. Judging her performances at the 1996 games-she was just way too young-and after 1996, she just didn't get a fair shake.
Have you read/listened to her book? Very interesting. She went through a lot as a young girl, her parents especially her dad and bela and Marta were awful to her
Very true- about both ladies. I remember seeing Komova in 2015 and thinking “I don’t remember her being that tall!” Her bars were such a work of mastery.
I feel bad for her, the coaches were clueless. There was no need to do Triple Twist in that code, you didn't even need to do any real landings, it was incredibly easy to build up all the necessary points with connected shushunova-type jumps where you just fall forward onto the floor. You could get 10.0 start value with a routine containing only these 3 series: whip + 2.5 Twist + straddle jump to prone Front Tuck through to 2.0 Twist + straddle jump 1/1 to prone Switch Leap + Switch Leap 1/4 + tuck jump 2/1 to prone That's it! Hilariously easy.
You couldn't be more right. Another one of Mary Lee Tracy's gymnasts, Alyssa Beckerman, consistently lost 0.2 in start value from an incomplete triple twist at the end of her routine.
I rarely saw that triple being completely the way around, I think that’s where the knee injury may have come from…I only saw her complete twice, at the nationals in 1998
This commentary is creepy. She’s injured her foot but Bela’s watching her and this is what he would want. What about her? Glad she got through it, but how injured do female gymnasts have to be before they can override the male ego and think about the possibility of breaking their necks by tumbling on an injured ankle?
People need to be better listeners. They didn't call her overweight, they referred to her beimg overweight qhen she tried to reenter the sport after yaking time off for personal reasons.
Overweight!?!?! That is one of the most disgusting comments I've EVER heard... How was THAT not a redflag about the abuse female gymnasts have endured!?
With the new age restrictions, she almost certainly would have never gotten to go to a single Olympics. What girls are not getting a chance now? How would they train differently if they knew they could go at 14? (or whatever it was before)
I respectfully disagree. You have a valid point and even Comaneci's perfect ten wouldn't have happened either. But this may lead to more longevity of the athletes as they'll compete with a more mature body instead of seizing that peak between 14 and 15.
me he fijado q las gimnastas de niñas hcen sus rutinas limpias y perfectas ejemplo nadia Comaneci y dominique y y de adolescentes como q se sienten más pesadas o algo la distrae que se caen o algo q antes no les fallaba les empieza fallar
I doubt she got credit for that triple full. She was not complete and she cannot repeat a skill for value I thought. So she would have had 2 2.5 twists and they would not taken away her mount due to connection bonus.
There is a reason why they are so young when they compete in the Olympics etc... Their bodies are still children's bodies. When their bodies become women they are not considered. Personally I think if your body looks like a child then you should have a separate games for them. This is suppose to be WOMENS gymnastics. Same thing happens in ballet. Young promising dancer and then puberty hits and all the curves come out and for some that is it.
Ballet is a visual art form based in long lines and a very specific aesthetic. Ballerinas are meant to be ethereal, seeming to be light as air when they move. Large, round bodies don't have the long lines, nor are they able to embody the sylph-like lightness. That's the art form. There are other forms of dance for bodies which don't conform to thag standard. You don't see skinny, short NBA stars either, lol. We can't all do everything.
She gives that smile pause in her dance to bela there in the corner then he turns his back. Like ehh your not impressing me kid. Overweight really, her face is rounder, the coaches yeh can be too harsh just sad that it no one listened to the gymnasts till it got to that point.
Are you talking about at 1:51? I don't think it was Bela, that was the camera staff. Bela was standing in front of the John Hancock sign as seen in 2:04
The reason the score was so low is bc she didnt get credit for her last pass at all. It was like she didnt even have a last pass bc she didnt make the triple all the way around. Lost all bonus as well as credit for a d dismount which is a technical requirement. I have NEVER been a fan of moceanu bc her gymnastics is what we call "cookie cutter" gymnastics. ......its very stock.
Im going to correct myself...yes she may have gotten credit for a 2 1/2 on the last pass, but, she was going for the triple and that is very apparent. So, my guess is, she wouldve been deducted for stumbling out of it, bc thats pretty much what it amounts to, and also wouldve been given a few technical deductions for why she even made the errors in the first place. The score was alot lower than some of the others in this particular competition bc her difficulty was lower than most. This was in the few years before they started doing to d score and execution score added together, so, its a little easier for me to explain this type of scoring. I was actually an elite gymnast myself, back in 1997, so, I dont really completely understand the new scoring system but, THIS type of scoring is what im used to. (Yes, I am old, lol) :)
karenKristal her total deduction on that last pass alone would be anywhere from .5 to .8 depending on how harsh they wanted to be. I would have to say that, she probably wouldve gotten a little higher score if she would've had a fall, without all the technical deductions. Then, a fall was only .5 deduction. (Sorry, I forgot to this in my first reply)
This is the most insane comment I have seen - you must have not been a professional gymnast or just have no clue what you are saying. Dominique was never the same after 96 but from the start of her career until about 98 she was and will always be one of the most amazing gymnasts of all times. Skill set plus the. Way she worked a crowd is to this day like no other: I did not personally enjoy this routine however you can never take credit from this perfect girl
@@ajimenez1719ify I think because she did the a 2 1/2 to punch layout on her first pass, and they counted her failed triple as another 2 1/2, which would've been a repeated element, so it was equivalent to her only doing 2 tumbling passes
Listen to Mary Lee Tracy giving her encouraging advice. What kind of coaching is that? Where’s the name calling and put downs that creates champions?! Call her a fat pumpkin! (I am being sarcastic ICYMI) 🤣🤣🤣
find it interesting that her and Marinescu were the 2 gymnast that had crazy crazy hype in 96 and were supposed to be the faces of gymnastics heading into the new millennium; both were long washed out of the sport by the time we go there.
They were both overhyped. Marinescu had nice style and form on some events, but her bars was a bit sloppy like all Romanians, her vaulting was pretty weak, and she lacked power and mental toughness in general. Moceanu was never particularly special in anyway gymnastics wise, as much I feel for her, for all she dealt with in the sport.
Christina pa Who would want to be Produnova? I’ll take a gymnast with grace, musicality and/or flexibility - a Lili Pod, Groshkova, etc. - any day of the week.
