Don’t dress for success | Nat’s What I Reckon | TEDxSydney

In this honest talk, comedian, content creator and isolation cooking champion Nat's What I Reckon shares his story and examines the perception of what success really means. As he says, society’s view of normality and success isn’t for everyone - like pre-packaged food it can be bland and unencouraging. That doesn’t make you undeserving of your own brand of success. Stick to your guns and tell jar sauce to get in the bin.
Content creator, comedian, rock musician, isolation cooking champion and mental health advocate, Nat has been making videos as Nat’s What I Reckon for almost a decade, with his hilarious social commentary earning him a social media following of well over 2 million.
With his love for taking the playful piss, Nat’s channel has provided him with a platform to hold a mirror to the bizarrity of masculine culture and societal politics. Nat has been open about his battle with anxiety and depression - using his platform to destigmatise the experience by encouraging conversation.
Nat’s “Death To Jar Sauce“ cooking videos - inspired by his observation during Covid lockdowns that packaged foods had been cleaned off the shelves while the fresh produce sections were full - sent Nat to a new level of viral, and most importantly succeeded in getting people back into cooking fresh produce, with a message of positivity and encouragement. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Sincerely, it wasn’t just because you trashed jar sauce. It was because you were encouraging people to take care of themselves, learn something new, AND to believe in their untapped abilities. PLUS the food was damn delicious. P.s. curse away, friend.

As some one who has mental health issues, pink hair, too many tattoos and swears a bit much, I am the person Nat is talking about. And he's right. I don't fit in to the 'normal success' model. BUT I have found my place in the world, and funnily enough it's on RU-vid and running my own 3d printing business. My success depends on me, just like Nat's depends on him. His success niche is him, and that wonderful personality. I couldn't give a sh!t about cooking. I watch Nat for Nat and I'll support him as long as he continues being real and true to himself.

It's not intuitive to grasp, but everyone's success is completely luck of the draw. Nat was lucky enough to be smart enough and have the resources available and personal temperament to be able to do what he did/does. A slightly different Nat would not have the patience to film himself, might not be good with technology, might not live in a country with clean drinking water, for that matter. This story of the "misfit made good" is universally loved and always has been, because all the plebs like to be able to think they can do it, too. Of course, only a select few can, by definition, because if everyone was successful, there'd just be a new definition of success. Not ever band can catch a break and get a record deal or become a viral hit. Not everyone who can make RU-vid vids or print off 3D printed parts can be successful. Everyone's success is governed by so many random things, including all the random things that made them the person they are - you had no choice in your genes, nor the environment (aka, stuff that happens to you) that interacted with those genes to produce you and your brain, so whether or not you have any propensity for doing the things society values (at any class level) is entirely NOT your own doing. It feels like your success depends on you, but it doesn't.

These are my top five reasons why Nat is great.... 1-He is completely himself. 2-He says what he thinks, not what he thinks you want to hear. 3-He has discovered that the secret to life is doing what you love. 4-He is not afraid to try something new. 5-He understands defeat and laughs at it. Thanks for the inspiration Nat!

I’ve been a chef for 10 years so Nat’s been preaching to the converted. The reason I watch Nat is his genuinely hilarious down-to-earth manner of addressing the world. He’s a breath of foul-mouthed fresh and I love it. My sister and I both live overseas and we both love food and we both miss Oz a bit. Nat has bridged that gap. I watch Nat because of Nat. He could do anything and I’d love it! His humbleness is kingly and his honesty is makes him endearing and relatable. I totally get what he’s talking about “fitting in”. What shows his true character is that he never gave up. He just kept looking in himself to see what he had to offer. “Maybe what makes you unqualified is what makes you qualified.” Brought tears to my eyes mate. ☺️👍🏻

Wheeeeeee found your TED talk Nat. You are the most endearing, natural Aussie human, who gives so much and makes us laugh. 👍 Love you Nat and Jules. P.S I was lucky enough to see ‘Nats What I Reckon’ show March 2020 just before COVID. Bloody loved it 🙌 ☺️❤️

Nat is such a genuine person. My heart goes out for him. We can tell that he wasn't fully comfortable up there to start off with. But it takes big bollocks to do this. Maximum respect bud. From Nottingham England 🇬🇧 👍

This man got me through the dhitty year of 2020, turning 18 in a national lockdown & being stuck at home all day in my own thoughts. Nat made me and my dad laugh an unbelievable amount together & I’ll be taking his recipes to University with me! And that’s what I reckon ;)
