Fun Fact: Several decades after the movie’s release, Lee Fierro who played Mrs.Kintner(the woman who slapped Brody) walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an “Alex Kintner Sandwich”. She commented that she had played his mother so many years ago; the owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her, and he was none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son in the movie. They had not seen each other since the original movie shoot.

You have to remember in 1975, the general public knew little to nada about sharks. This was the movie that spawned generations of marine biologists and brought about shark week et all. A summer beach town earns their entire year's money in the 3 months, and has to live on it the rest of the year. In the novel, you learn that the mayor was also in debt to the NY Mafia from whom he borrowed money for medical procedures for his sick wife. In exchange he gave them rental properties on Amity, that they could have all the rental profits from. No summer renters - no mob money = cement shoes for the Mayor Vaughn. :D

We were so ignorant about sharks and their behavior at the time. The author, Peter Benchley had no idea that ppl were going to go on a shark killing spree after the film. Up until his death, he became an advocate and educator on real shark behavior. He has a bit part in the film as a reporter on the beach. He was an amazingly creative writer.

I'm not a fisher expert, but the things that Quint used to strap himself on the chair are used in the heavy fishing. Those things are used to lock the fisher to the chair (that's locked to the boat), so when the fish (or whatever thing) is pulling, the fisher wouldn't be pulled out (meaning falling, getting into water, etc). That's also what Quint uses to support his feet. With that thig he would never be pulled over, so he an pull things bigger than him.

It is the original summer blockbuster. The term blockbuster was coined due to the huge queues for the cinema stretching round the 'block'. Even with the greatness of star wars, I think this movie is still the greatest movie ever made. No other movie before or since has had the cultural effect on human beings as a species as this one. You must remember that after this movie released it tapped into the DNA level primal fears we have as humans, and stopped half the planet swimming in the ocean again!!! The soundtrack is perfect, the casting, the acting, the screenplay, the direction, the cinematography. In fact Robert Shaws famous monolgue is arguably the greatest piece of acting in the history of celluloid.

If I remember correctly one of the things that made the USS Indianapolis sinking worse was that when they sank they sent out an SOS but since it was on a secret mission the US charts showed no US ships in that area so they believed it to be a fake SOS sent by the Japanese to lure US ships into a trap, so they basically ignored it which made it take longer for the rescue of the sailors in the water.
@douglascampbell9809
@douglascampbell9809 2 года назад
Declassified records later showed that three stations received the signals but none acted upon the call. One commander was drunk, another had ordered his men not to disturb him, and a third thought it was a Japanese trap. The fact that Navy brass court martialed Captain McVay to hide it's failures in other areas was a travesty. He was court-martialed on two charges: failing to order his men to abandon ship and hazarding the ship. Cleared of the charge of failing to order abandon ship, McVay was convicted of "hazarding his ship by failing to zigzag". Fleet Admiral Chester Nimitz remitted McVay's sentence and restored him to active duty. McVay retired in 1949 as a rear admiral. It took until 2001 for the Navy to enter the Congressional language into McVay's official Navy service record, clearing him of all wrongdoing.

It turns out swimming with sharks isn’t that generally dangerous. Great whites are still great whites, but humans aren’t their preferred prey, and this movie really dramatized shark attacks as well as demonized most sharks as man-eating machines. In the years following this film and it’s sequels, the number of incidents where humans deliberately went out to hunt sharks of all kinds went up, and there were education campaigns from the marine biology field to try and counteract that as it was actually turning them into a more endangered species. Fencing off an area that large, with material strong enough to resist the shark that size and strength anyway, would’ve been prohibitively costly at that time, although that idea does start to reach a point of feasibility in later years and decades, and actually gets tried in one of the sequels..
@MikeGreenwood51

Would there be some great loss to the animal or human kingdoms if sharks were hunted to extinction? Even a little 10 footer gnawing away at some one's limbs ravenously does not seem so likable that I would say they need to either killed, eradicatedor given the ocean as theres and humans only permitted to swim in shark protected areas. All may not be predatorial. But some are. About human's not being their preferred lunch. My guess is they see a humman as meat. Just like we may see pork as meat. So whilst you say humans are not their preferred. They still attack humans and still thak chunks out of some people. Maybe carots are not himan's preferred food. But they still eat foods which are not their prefered food.

Jaws is a classic. I love the first scene. You don’t see the shark or any blood but you know what’s happening to her. Her screams were legit. Guys were underneath her pulling her back and forth and she broke a rib. I think Quint broke the radio because remember his story of the USS Indianapolis (true story by the way). He didn’t want to go through that again so he didn’t want help. He was going to kill the shark or else. These are all good actors. Roy Scheider (Chief Brody) was in some great movies, French Connection, Marathon Man, The Seven Ups, All That Jazz and of course Jaws. The music is classic. Scared me out of the water for a long time. I go in the ocean but not beyond the waves. I saw some fins off Hilton Head SC and high tailed it out of the water and it was dolphins….whew. They had mechanical problems with the shark so they used it sparingly and it worked. Spielberg had the summer blockbuster with this movie. Good reaction guys.

My family & I saw JAWS at a drive-in movie when I was 8 in 1975. JAWS kept me out of the water & away from beaches the rest of my life. It was the scariest thing I ever saw that young. Sometimes I go to the public pools in the Summer.

It's probably already been said, but the reporter that talked about "a cloud in the shape of a killer shark" was played by Peter Benchley, the author of the book JAWS.

There is a 1996 movie called The Beast which was written by the same guy who wrote Jaws. It's a near identical story, but with a giant squid.

Originally the film was supposed to be WAY more graphic than the final cut. I remember there being an nightmarish unused frame where during Alex's death, the shark was originally supposed to rise out if the water, the boy in his mouth when he slammed down into the ocean floor. The reason this wasn't the case was because the animatronic shark they used kept malfunctioning on set for the first act, so Spielberg came up with the idea of shooting it from a POV, effectively making it more scarier so that the audience would be more frightened when the shark finally did appear onscreen.

Fun fact: in 2020 there were 10 deaths worldwide due to unprovoked shark attacks. The chance of being killed by a shark in the USA is about 3,748,067 to 1. About 11,400 sharks are killed worldwide every hour!

What I remember most about this film is that, when my family and I watched it on TV at home, our dog was with my mother, and he realized , when the music played that preluded the shark attack, that she got tense. About halfway through the movie, it was enough for that music to start playing for him to star howling like crazy. Are you going to react to any of the sequels?

Problem with screaming kids in real life and movies, they could be having fun, they could be getting kidnapped, raped, or murdered, and by sound alone its hard to tell them apart. I've gone running out of my house after hearing agonised sounding screams with a weapon and its was just some kids being stupid. Unfortunately there was a pedo gang in my neighbourhood at the time we later learned when they were arrested, and some of them would regret that cry wolf type of thing.

We had a jaws situation with a massive shark in Brighton where I live when I was kid. I saw a massive shape in the water from the pier. Freaked me out at the time, we don't having anything bigger than a person in our parts of the water, if you go west you get larger sea animals, but in the south it basically never happens. I got chased down by a huge eel once, and that was enough for me. Cunts were laughing while I'm pretty sure I broke a few records in a blind panic.

Jaws is one of my favorite horror movie ever. Fun Fact: The reason why the movie came out in 1975 instead of 1974 is because the robotic shark was giving them a hard time like it would work and the next minute it wouldn’t work I don’t know how else to explain it but I think this movie came out really good even I’m afraid to go in the ocean even though I like to swim in the ocean every time I go to the beach but I’m not really scared of the movie Jaws because the shark is fake plus it doesn’t really bother me. Another fun fact: the person who played the reporter is the author who wrote the book called Jaws.
