This is without a doubt one of the most humble Oscar wins I've ever seen. RIP Don.

In college, I got to interview Mr. Ameche for our student-run radio station. What a class act. He was at a slow point in his career, doing dinner theatre in a small town south of Tacoma, but he was a pro. You would have thought he was being interviewed by a network news team, rather than two kids who were still learning which way to point a mic. I'll never forget the time he spent with us, and how he showed a personal interest in our careers. I was so happy when I saw his own career take off again.

This often happens at the Oscars, an award given for a career. However, I thought he did give a great performance in Cocoon. It was just a more lighthearted role, which is often compared unfairly in performance to deeper roles. It's also why comedies are so often overlooked by the Oscars. Just my opinion.

Mr Ameche was a master light comedian of Hollywood's golden age and quite underrated. He was outstanding in Ermst Lubitsch's wonderfully funny classic Heaven Can Wait. I was a fan, but this award was so transparently sentimental. There was no reason to single him out among that fine cast in Cocoon. In fact, Hume Cronyn's part was better. What was even stranger was that Ameche was being touted for an Oscar almost a year in advance. I wondered why when I saw the film and why again when he won. As much as I hate it when others use this word, Klaus Maria Brandauer was "robbed" for Out of Africa. Having said all that, I can't help admitting it was a beautiful and classy speech.
@ExplorerDS6789
@ExplorerDS6789 6 лет назад
I believe, in this case, Mr. Ameche's Oscar was a sort of Lifetime Achievement thing. He made a return to film in 1983 after a 13-year-hiatus, and I guess the Academy wanted to find a way to properly honor him.
@efan2012
@efan2012 5 лет назад
I disagree about Cronyn, imo Wilfred Brimley was the best actor in Cocoon. His arc was more moving as he had the story of the grandpa and the grandson which breaks my heart every time I watch it, and he had more heavy dramatic lifting to do. Hume did the best in the 2nd one, his arc in that one was quite sad. Brimley's monologue after their decision where he tells the grandson they are leaving and he has to grow up on his own is so heartbreaking to watch yet he nailed it. That alone deserved a nomination, I woulda been happy with him or Brandauer or even Hickey winning it (Hickey's journey to the nom is as moving as Ameche's was.) Don's performance was the more lighter of the 3 in Cocoon. Granted he went threw his own arc and was fun to watch, but when push came to shove he didn't really do much emotional stuff in either Cocoon film. He was the loudmouth who told a lot of jokes and had the most fun, not exactly an Oscar winning performance but he made the movie more fun. This was definitely an achievement award more than anything, No offense to Don he seemed like a wonderful man but it wasn't the best performance of 85 for that category.
@nondescript2892
@nondescript2892 2 года назад
Of course it was a sentimental choice...but what's wrong with that...more than anything these prizes are either an indication of your commercial value or in Ameche's case how well loved you are by your peers...notice that a few years later Lauren Bacall did NOT get the sentimental oscar 😉....she was ..let's say..more divisive among her tribe.....
