not only that. at first, i assumed it had something to do with carlotta's comeback singing in the stage but turned out it wasn't the case. the audience (who unaware of ruse to lure and capture phantom) repulsed at the jarring discordance and staging of Don Juan Triumphant, which is very different from the traditional opera stagings they are used to. even the costumes of the actors are also more sexualized & provocative, than that in the stage show - far more form-flattering and tighter. Christine's dress for example changes from the low cut pink dress of the show to a sleeveless Spanish-style dress, complete with a flower in her hair.
It's not anxiety it's shock. Remember this is the 1800s and compare Don Juan to the operas we've seen throughout the film Il Muto and Hannibal are fairly light material. Don Juan is incredibly dark and overtly explicit there is no jokey innuendo this is boldly and brazenly about sexual desire. To the conservative French audience who would likely have been made up of artistocrats this is scandalous and unlike anything they've heard before. It also helps to underscore the Phantom is ahead of his time musically.
I still love the costume and hair done for this scene. It’s amazing and I’m in love with the color palette used. Reds, oranges, and blacks are always a passionate mix. Great portrayal even without music and choreography used
I think this is the last time the curtains open before they burn. But usually in the stage show there is a man with a torch going across the stage before the curtain opens for Don Juan. I don’t know why they didn’t include it in this though
2:24 why is the guard standing in front of an electrical light source? I thought this was the end of the 1800s? Surely light bulbs at the time were too primitive to allow for what looks like a modern day stage light!
It’s not a light bulb. I think they used things like these it for different-colored lights at the time (and you can see more clearly a green one during the ballet it Il Muto); it’s an orange-colored glass pane in front of the flame
i think the Phantom is playing a game with them called Tonight Someone Dies , When he strangles Piangi and taking his place in front of Christine Daae " You disobeyed my orders and put other people in my plays that i wrote , now someone's gonna die tonight , Hmm , i know how about Piangi , Piangi you're mine " . he knew which victims to pick
Anthony Lee it's a traditional spanish play, firstly written in the 16th century. Its story was expanded in the 19th century by Zorrilla. Basically the story is about a ladies` man, who is saved by God when he finds the true love in a nun. Personally I think that is one of the best plays in history, due to the values it represents, higly recommended
