This is one of the most beautiful songs you will ever hear. It is about the great artist "Vincent Van Gough" and his life all centred around the great painting "Starry Night." The song really captures his tortured life. Misunderstood in a different age, but much revered in our present time!

@@Summon256 What you are missing here as well as the knowledge of the reviewer is that Vincent Van Gogh was not just some artist that wasnt appreciated until after his death. He was a Mentally disturbed man. Having severe episodes including his eating of the oil paints while he was in an asylum which resulted in them taking the oil paints away. Add to which ..back then there was no international social media..you were known by local townfolk alone..and if your the crazy kid on the block ranting and raving as well as alchoholic..your going to be dismissed Alot. The song is still beautiful and even more haunting a melody when taken in just how tortured a soul Vincent was.

If I were a songwriter, and I have been at times, I would be so intimidated attempting to write a song worthy of Van Gogh and his art. How can I adequately capture the beauty and the pain and the longing and the serenity of his life and work? But he sure did it. The imagery and melancholy are so vivid. It’s an all timer and I think you’re right that there’s a real sense of empathy for the artist coming from Don in the song.

The other important part of the song that you didn't mention is that he also sings about Van Gogh's schizophrenia, which got worse as he got older. When he says "How you suffered for your sanity", that is what he is referring to, and the voices in his head that wouldn't go away. That is why he tried to get rid of them by cutting off his ear. Eventually, it is believed he committed suicide by a gun, as of course, in his time, there was no treatment for mental or emotional disorders. Everything you said is true as well.

Exactly what you said about McLean is the reason Roberta Flack was moved by hearing him to write Killing Me Softly. She has discussed this in recorded interviews. Another beautiful song he wrote and sang is "And I Love You So", which became a hit for Perry Como and was recorded by Frank Sinatra.
@vorlon1
@vorlon1 Год назад
Lori Lieberman wrote Killing Me Softly as a poem after attending a McLean concert in Los Angeles. She then recorded it. Roberta Flack heard her version, made her own recording and turned it into a major hit. "Sitting in the audience, Lieberman found herself struck by another McLean song, a heartbreaking ballad, “Empty Chairs.” “As soon as he started singing, she pulled out a napkin and starting scribbling notes,” remembers the friend, Michele Willens. “The rest is history.” Lieberman says she later shared her experience - and her napkin poem - over the phone with Gimbel. As he said in multiple interviews during the 1970s, Gimbel already had a song title in his notebook that seemed to click with her feelings. He took the lyrics to Charles Fox, his piano-playing writing partner, and together they created a classic: Roberta Flack’s 1973 No. 1 hit, “Killing Me Softly With His Song.” In those days, Gimbel repeatedly talked of how the song emerged after he and Lieberman discussed the McLean concert. “Her conversation fed me, inspired me, gave me some language and a choice of words,” Gimbel told the Asbury Park Press in a story published early in 1973. Lieberman released her version of the song in 1972. It wasn’t a hit, but Flack heard it on an airplane and decided she wanted to cover it. Lieberman did not get a songwriting credit or a cut of the publishing that flowed to Fox and Gimbel after Flack’s Grammy-winning version or the 1996 Fugees redo that hit No. 2. That didn’t bother her. She was content with her place in pop history as the song’s inspiration."

Beautifully haunting,emotional and unforgettable once heard. Don Maclean is a truly great artist. How do you capture Van Gogh's life as a painter and a human who suffered great mental distress. Don Maclean did this. No-one else that for me would of been able to portray the tormented beautiful soul of Vincent Van Gogh. His sacrifice of a tormented gift was mankind's great reaward. Don Maclean has a truly great voice. Listen to his version of Crying, famously wrritten, recorded and peformed by Roy Orbison. It compares to the great Roy Orbison. Don Maclean has it all. Thanks for a great reaction

This song is a masterpiece about this great genius and so many overlooked artists, but also about mental illness. Today our cities are spaces for thousands and thousands of these individuals, who too are are discarded and left to live in their tormented worlds where no cares, and they are deftly ignored by the rest of us because they experience a reality that doesn't fit with ours.

The true beauty of Vincent Van Gogh is how he transformed his pain into beauty 😢. I was 5 or 6,my parents had lots of art books and I’d disappear into his paintings. Starry night, can’t name most others but his colours, the way he slapped on the paint, I just couldn’t take my eyes off of it. This song is such a beautiful tribute to all lost souls, it speaks deeply to what Van Gogh tried to portray, I’m in my 60s now and still cry every rtme I hear it ❤ That this still resonates is as wonderful as surprising. McLean is one of those rare performers who can move an audience or the listener just with his guitar, his voice and his words. He played a concert at London's Hyde Park in the early '70s for 85,000 people. Just Don with his guitar. It is well known that the song "Killing Me Softly with His Song" was written about him and it's an apt tribute. If song lyrics can be considered poetry, his words come as close as anyones. Check out his song "And I Love You So" which is thought by many to be among the greatest love songs.

Angela, if you've never investigated famous painters of the 19th century, Vincent Van Gogh is in the top 10. Though, like many artists, in his life he never saw his art become as famous as it is to this very day. You might look at the Hollywood-ized story of his life, "Lust For Life," starring Kirk Dougles as Vincent in what was for Kirk a departure from his usual tough-guy roles. Also, please look at one of my favorite Van Gogh paintings, "The Potato Eaters." Of course it is but one among dozens of Van Gogh masterpieces. Thanks, Angela! Great react to Don McLean's follow-up to "American Pie."

There is a theory that Vincent Van Gogh had long-term lead poisoning from putting his brushes in his mouth while he was painting, and that was part of what drove him mad, and then you throw in unrequited love, and a sense of failure into the mix it's no wonder that he was a troubled person but his paintings are startling when you see them in person. The paint is caked on the canvas so thick..
