Amber is so right about the writing in Supertramp and the other bands she mentions. 70's prog and even prog-pop was cinematic and ambitious in terms of structure, story telling and range of texture and dynamics, to the benefit of the open-minded listener. It's so nice to see people still appreciate that.

I mean, Supertramp had several top 10 albums including a number one, and a handful of top 40 hits (prog rock bands don't usually have much singles success). ELO had five top 10 albums, seven top 10 singles and 20 top 40 singles. I don't think either were THAT underappreciated, compared to some bands that people have never heard of

Supertramp's greatest attribute is without doubt their exceptional talent in 'musical arrangement'. The entry and disappearance of different instruments throughout their pieces to instigate a particular dramatic effect is nothing short of genius. They are individually quite talented with their own instruments of choice, but it is the total conception of what they want to present which is magical and extremely entertaining for the listener. God bless you Supertramp..

Back in 1977, when I was a senior in high school, I was stood up by a girl (for a high school dance) and walked along the Lake Michigan shoreline dressed in a brand new suit, weeping my eyes out. Tired of feeling sorry for myself, i remembered that someone I knew lived nearby and had friends over for a small party. I decided to go there, despite my puffy eyes. For some reason the memory of stepping into that friend's house always stuck in my mind: She had Supertramp playing on her stereo, and the song was "Give a Little Bit." The combination of the music and being with good friends actually wiped the memory of being stood up out of my mind, and I managed to have a great time. 😀

@ajschroetlin2196
@ajschroetlin2196 2 года назад
@@rapsack7058 I put parentheses around the word popular for a reason. I'm not talking about music in general I'm talking about the music that's played over the radio. Not the music scene in general, which is solid. If you were to compare the top 10 Billboard songs right now to the top 10 songs in say 1976, do you think today's popular music holds up? Do you think Nicky Minaj really stacks up against someone like Janis Joplin? Both the music production business and the radio business has changed dramatically since then. Back in the day DJs weren't forced to play certain music. Back then radio stations weren't confined to one genre. I respectfully disagree.
@rapsack7058

@@ajschroetlin2196 Ahh....i am born 1970...so...Jenis Joblin was way before my time...But in the 80's there were a lot of crap that were popular... Thankfully i dont remember to much...BUT i know that we were very selective...when we recorded our own tapes And you needed to be in the sceen to learn what bands exsisted...there were lots of niches.. I am not sure if this is still the case...... I was never a charts fan or so...But very open for different styles and sceenes.. When i speakl with my the younger ones i i have the feelings they still have the same culture of music not style or so, but special music sceenes and subculturs...ad with the modern "cheap professional" equipment you have very nice but hidden alternative market. Today its quite easy to to make a high standard record...if you have the skills... I dont know....i think i cant judge it... If you see just the "modern" mainstream you find musicians like Eminem and i thin he made realy graet stuff...i thinkt he kidsfof our kids will still listen to him... SO no...cant say old times were better just different. Each era has there own heros and special styles...

There are five band members in Supertramp. I'm so happy you love them, Amber. They have been my favourite group for almost 50 years, with ELO close behind. Goodbye Stranger was a massive hit for them and is from the Breakfast in America album. As great as the entire LP is, in my opinion it may be only their third or fourth-best album - that's how amazing their albums were in the 1970s. As much as they are loved and admired by many they are still vastly underrated in the history of rock/pop music. It is a total travesty that they are still not in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame. They have their own sound. The musicianship is top rate and the lyrics from Rick Davies and Roger Hodgson range from happy to very bleak and dark. They have a lot of social commentary in their words especially from their all-time classic album Crime of the Century, my favourite LP ever. They use saxophone, electric piano, clarinet and harmonica in such beautiful ways. Please react to a lot more Supertramp, and not just from Breakfast in America, their most successful album commercially. Every song on Crime of the Century, Crisis? What Crisis?, Even in the Quietest Moments and Famous Last Words is either great or worth listening to at the very least.

@@G-BUD_Budlong I have the original records for ELO and Supertramp too. In the case of Supertramp, I spent more than double the going rate for an album back in the early to mid-1980s and bought the specially pressed, half-speed mastered discs called the Audiophile series. They were CD quality records before CDs came out or as the Compact Disc format was just becoming popular. They look and sound great still, 40 years later.

I had the privilege of seeing Supertramp twice. Once in 1975 and then in 2005….30 years apart….and they blew me away both times. Their concerts are an event. They only have 5 members in the band but some times they have an extra musician or two and the first time I saw them, they had a whole troop of actors who act out parts in their songs on stage while they are playing. The also had a huge round screen (like Pink Floyd) and played movie tracks that accompanied some of their songs. And “most of all”…..the sound was incredible. Sitting in a huge arena …....the sound was as good as sitting at home with headphones on. For me…..my top five bands are Pink Floyd, Supertramp, Steely Dan, Doobie Bros and Toto.

This is my favorite video of your reactions so far (and I watch them all). Amber looked like she was having a genuine blast with this song and Jay was really groovin with it. One of my favorite songs with two of my favorite RU-vidrs.

Thanks for sharing! We Polynesians grew up on this music as most of us are first generation Americans and our parents came here during this era. My old man and his family moved to Hawaii from Tonga in '70 and this was all they knew along with reggae, mo town and disco. Me, my siblings and all my cousins grew up listening to this and it brings hella nostalgia. Especially this song. Always reminds me of Dad. He's my hero. Thanks again for sharing!!! Your Tongan friend from Utah 🤙🏾💯

My sister had this album when I was a kid but it didn't appreciate it till later in life. Another band I know you will like is Boston, "More Than a Feeling" will blow your mind. Thanks guys for your channel.

Supertramp is one of those groups that flew under my radar. I think I don’t know any of their songs until I hear one and I instantly recognize it.

Isn't it a charming, beautifully written song ? They're one of a kind. A style of their own.

I can't thank you enough for introducing Supertramp to a new generation. My brother had the album Crime of the Century. It has been my favorite album of all time! I bought the album, cassette, CD and yes, it is still at the top of my playlist. It warms my heart that you like them. I have often wondered if anyone else still appreciates them. Almost 50 yrs later, I can listen to them everyday. Thank you so much!! You Rock!

I’ve been obsessed with Supertramp as well. I was a kid. But their sound was so unique and the musicianship…. Vocals. Icons.

I saw these guys live. Seemed like 10 guys on stage. And it sounded exactly like the album versions. Every little noise included.

The guitar player in this is Roger Hodgson.. He's the guy who sang "The Logical Song" And "Take The Long Way Home" and played keyboards in both of those. The singer in this one was Rick Davies who also plays keyboards. I think one of their iconic sounds that give away it's a Supertramp song is that old Wurlitzer electric piano that's featured in many of their songs along with the high harmonies.

These two are SO good: They don’t interrupt every 10 seconds! She’s kind of in her own world- trying to feel the song, while he’s all about “air-playing,” and loving the high-hat. Good call comparing them to Rush. I’d just argue that within 10 seconds of just about ANY Rush song, you know it’s Rush- not so much about Supertramp. People either love or hate this band, and especially this song- another thing they have in common with Rush.😆

Another one of 'Most Underrated Bands' grouping! Great musicianship all round and the lyrics - well! "Now some they do and some they don't And some you just can't tell And some they will and some they won't With some it's just as well" Great to see your reactions to this well-loved band, keep doing it you two!

My dad used to play his classic rock albums on Sunday morning when I was a kid. I’m 20 now but I’ve grown to really love classic rock and it’s my second after hip hop. I can listen to this album all day. From dire straits, queen and especially supertramp, I wish I could go back and see those concerts live. Supertramp is definitely my favourite classic rock band. The voices of the lead singer just blend so well and they go from fast to slow and just so on point. “If everybody was listening” by supertramp is definitely my favourite song of theirs. Anyways im hitting that sub button!

I have recently learned that this is about saying goodbye to drugs (marijuana) - "goodbye Mary, goodbye Jane". A lot of people imagine it's about having one night stands on the road, and I can understand that, but I always thought it was figurative, not literal. The crowd at a concert is the one night stand, so he's saying goodbye to that nights crowd and it's off to the next town on the schedule. My favorite Supertramp album is Crime of the Century, "School" being the track that will blow you away. Another good track on BIA is "Child of Vision". Breakfast in America was HUGE - #1 on the charts for weeks, nominated for 7 Grammys and won 3 I believe.

My mom and i had such a love/hate, with extra hate relationship. She was a very mentally ill woman, as I was growing up. For as long as I could remember, my mother was mentally ill and extremely abusive. Moving on, as I got to be an adult, I would go over to her apartment on Sundays and we would always listen to music on RU-vid. And she would always request Goodbye Stranger. This song actually represents my mother. Because I had no idea of anything about her life when she was younger, she refused to talk about it. And her and I never had any in-depth conversations about anything about life, in general. Her and I were basically Strangers to one another. And I will let you know that the last time I listened to this song, was right around January of 2016...until today. I have not been able to bring myself to listen to this song, until I was listening to your reaction videos and this one just started playing without my knowledge. But thank you for bringing me back to it. RIP Doris Ann 11/08/1951 to 01/07/2017❤
