You should use a pic from when you shaved your head for charity as a tongue in cheek endorsement for the hair loss product. Of course you'd want to make it clear you're joking.
The fun part about the Sleep with the Fishes card is that it is part of a three part mini-story. Expendable Lackey states "Altonio? No, I'm sorry. No one by that name works here". Then Sleep with the Fishes shows just how expendable he was. Then Exotic Pets shows the same fish from the previous card with the text "Investigators observed that Altonio's beloved fish were thriving after his disappearance." Poor Altonio.
Wow, so creative, so cool, I've played HS while Wissards was trying to figure out how to rip people off their money through digital scams, and this set is just a cheap copy of Mean streets of Gadgetzan , it's like they don't even try. Strixhaven was Schoolmance Academy, it's just, like, how can a company that's worth millions, subsidiary of a company that's worth billions, not produce a single thought off set nowadays? Like, there's single individuals who can actively create a better games than arena let alone stories for sets. Just resign and hand MTG to a competent and passionate group of people for heaven's sake.

He is aware it is a card.... He literally threw in that to help his youtube algorithm with all the "umm actually" comments because he knows magic players like to be big brained know it alls. You've been played.
Same. I'm in a weird state of not wanting to play because I'm bored with the decks I have, but not wanting to go in on a new deck unless I'm already actively playing.
@@Pedalbored man, I love StarCraft! I've been trying to get back into it. Last time I watched, Maru and Byun were destroying the leagues. also which pedals are on your board?
'Sleep With The Fishes' was, in fact, an old Warrior boardclear in Hearthstone...printed in MEAN STREETS OF GADGETZAN, no less (hearthstone's very own criminally-inclined set). That bit of potential 'oh, THAT'S what that was!' out of the way- great video, prof! :>
Kind of like MtG and Hearthstone releasing mage school themed sets around the same time (Strixhaven and Scholomancy respectively). A very convenient coincidence.
@@lableak4165 It exists. Same goes with flying and another keyword afaik. It came out with the first Alchemy set, which is M:tG doing Arena-exclusive cards and mechanics. They're not even being subtle about it at this point.
"Slip Out the Back" is super broken. You can even protect your Auras and Equipments at minimal cost. I hate those board wipes. And this card is basically a counter spell for one mana with a positive side effect on top.
You can target an opponent's creature to dodge certain tech too. Like if they try to equip Hammer, or an Aura, or a pump spell; Or if they're going infinite; or if the creature matters to their strategy you can remove it for a turn so everyone can interact.
6:18 I'm sure dozens of people have probably pointed this out, but... Sleep with the Fishes 2UU Enchantment - Aura Enchant creature When Sleeping with the Fish enters the battlefield, tap enchanted creature and you create a 1/1 blue Fish creature token with "This creature is unblockable." Enchanted creature doesn't untap during its controller's untap step.
Firstly, Sleep with the Fishes is an enchantment in this set. Second, they started putting legendary in the type line of planeswalkers on September 30, 2017. Afterwards, they used Oracle text updates to retcon all planeswalkers to be legendary. Previously all planeswalkers had a planeswalker type (such as Liliana or Ajani) and you could only control one planeswalker of any given type. The rule was modified for Jace, cunning castaway.
As is my tradition I bought a box of boosters. So I can play round after round of sealed against my brother. However after opening my first sealed pool I have hit upon an idea for a commander deck that as far as I'm aware has not been even remotely a thing before now. Citizen tribal. I don't think it will be very good but I just love the idea of making a deck out of the proletariat.
@@bengregorash I has 20 different names it seems. Bootleggers is what I am seeing XD, wonder what they will settle on. but definitely not sneaky by any means, it's obviously severely overpowered, and in green it is coming out turn 4 consistently. Hell I bet turn 3 will happen as well. Congrats you know have 0 wasted mana in green.
@@shockingshane9700 Unfortunately there are two very good cards with very similar names, one is named Bootleggers' Stash (a really good green card from the main set, but was originally called Smuggler's Stash in an unofficial translation) and the other is Smuggler's Share (a really good white card from the commander precons, but was leaked via early collector boosters so people think it's in the main set). They also both create treasures, I'm sure this is going to cause a lot of confusion over the next few weeks.
Rumor gatherer would pair well with a Brago, King Eternal (or any blink deck really) that utilizes ETB creatures, as you could get this card triggering a lot in one turn.
Prof's question about a non-legendary Planeswalker is interesting! I could potentially see a future set with a villian/hero who sets out to either assemble an army of Planeswalkers or discover a way to intentionally ignite sparks. Then you could have a Planeswalker card that represents an average member of this army/school/cult/whatever. Kinda like the mass-produced Evangelions from NGE.
@@anonymousgorilla6576 No, Gideon of the Trials (and all other planeswalker cards, for that matter) are legendary. Even if they don't say it on the card directly, this is true, because they were errataed in Ixalan.
We can already generate non-legendary planeswalker copies with Ob Nixilus in thus set, plus Jace from the Ixalan set. Guess the Professor just forgot about that.
@@LadyLunarSatine "Collector Ouphe" is super clutch as is "Viridian Revel" against treasures Ouphe turns then off and Revel draws you a car, IF you choose to, everytime your opponent cracks a treasure.
I'm excited to try Giada in my Kaalia deck. Having an extra form of ramp in the 2 drop slot, plus making the other angels bigger sounds good to me. The fact it is also a 2/2 angel with flying and vigilance means it works with other angel synergy and can even get in some early damage while still being able to tap for mana on the same turn
I think it never had enough concrete components to count as a combo, but one thing I really loved when I was first seriously getting into MTG on Arena was to build Blue-White-Red-Black decks that combined pirates with Smothering Tithe. Hey, the pirate cards use treasures! Tithe generates treasures! It's gotta be great! It wasn't, but it was always fun to eke out a win with it, and spurred my love of building up a huge hoard of cheapo artifacts and using them to boost Karn, Scion of Urza's tokens or something like that. (Actually, this reminds me, while Ravnica was in Standard I used to play decks that stalled out a lot while getting two-three Smothering Tithes on the board, then play Emergency Powers. It draws the opponent 7 cards, which means they have to either pay ludicrous amounts of mana or generate you a ton of treasure tokens, and then I'd play Mass Manipulation or something along those lines when they played out their freshly-obtained hand. This had, like, a 5% chance of working, but man, it was great when it did.)
Void Rend will replace Utter End in my Aminatou deck for sure. I'm planning to pick up Arcane Bombardment and Big Score for my Kalamax deck, but man am I tempted to buy a set booster box for SNC. the remaining triomes are bound to be hits (and I need Esper and Grixis for existing decks), and there are interesting cards at all rarities.
I think you misunderstood Cabaretti Ascendency, even if you put the card on top with its ability, that’s the card you’re drawing for the turn. It’s essentially an upkeep scry 1 with upside. I think the Brokers Ascendency is the most broken imo. I also think Maestros Ascendency is going to get a lot of people who have Izzet spellslinger decks to make them Grixis.
did it for kamigawa and even with two boseiju, plus all other stuff I wanted, I still spent less than a box. (however, I feel like ill be buying 3, maybe all, commander precon decks from new capenna)
Somehow i always feel that it is value buying commander precons because of value cards, plus the whole deck is made to be played in some way so it adds variety to your collection
What I do for each set is if I can I just buy a bundle, so I can get a nice storage box and not gonna lie, I like the die. Any singles I don't get from the set boosters I buy. Also wait for a week or two if you can so that when more of boxes get opened prices crash
My favorite Planeswalker is vraska, golgari queen. I love removal, especially if it can be repeated. And a vraska is one of my favorite cards to mill in my muldrotha.
I am INCREDIBLY excited for all the new Grixis cards! I first started playing during Alara block and I instantly took to the Grixis playstyle - 13 years later and still going strong! And I am absolutely building Lord Xander >:D
I'm not familiar with commander so maybe I'm super wrong but if you have and can tap 15 creatures to untap them with Halo Fountain, wouldn't you just win anyway? Seems like a win more card, unless the card draw is that necessary
I will say, personally, that I bought 2 packs not realizing just how many commanders there really is in this set, and I ended up pulling about 5-6 2-3 color legendary creatures on top of the Riveteer deck. One of those commanders was such a neat concept that I just went and built a deck around them. HOWEVER, I wasn't finding that legendary creature, or a few others, on any list website with legendary tags, probably because of unpopularity at that point. I believe it is worth buying 2-4 packs just to see what commanders you can find that you might not have seen online, and just build around them, because, even though not all of them are high power, they have some really cool ideas to work around. Vazi, Keen Negotiator was the Commander I found interesting if yall were wondering.
I'm constantly surprised I don't see more people talking about Devilish Valet; It's a CreatureFall power-doubler on a trample + haste body. Dropping him on the board with some token generation set up could make for a scary huge threat surprise.
Ok, nvm. Stash is only good in very specific decks with heavy synergy. It’s extremely bad by itself. It does nothing the moment you’ve played it. (Because you already wasted all the mana on it) It does nothing next turn after you played it. (Because your lands produced only one treasure at this poin, wich is not that different from just taping for mana) And only after 2 turns, it start’s to work. And all it does at this point is “doubling” you land-mana. Its terrible. Just Play Kruphics
@@Uefeti kruphix loses you the mana as soon as he's removed. Plus you can exploit the fact that the treasures you're making are artifacts, which is very easy in commander. For me that's the biggest playoff is easy artifact generation. Plus what's to say you're tapping all your lands just to play it and you won't have lands leftover the turn you play it? You can get benefits the turn it comes out. You can even have it in your kruphix deck!
Vivian is definitely OP. I have been playing for 6 months, cracked two Vivian's on the pre-release and with some treasure generation in the deck, I went 3-0 against folks who have been playing 20+ years...
I find opening packs casually let's me explore a set and a plane on my own terms and I think that's just as valuable as the gameplay experience with magic
Bootlegger’s Stash is my current favorite. It might be a 6 mana do nothing but it’s in the same deck as Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, and Adrix and Nev. I would be fine with tapping a land for 8 treasures some day lmao.
My top slot for new Capenna is slip out the back. A one mana card to protect any commander with blue or have the benefit to temp remove an creature of your opponents or to dodge an bad effect of your own creatures makes this card insane.
I am working on a Mari, the Killing Quill deck. I just think it seems like itll be a fun, monoblack graveyard hate build with lots of treasures. Sort of like a criminal underground
Capenna has added some really interesting cards, a few have some very weird interactions with some older Magic cards and how the rules work. I uploaded a few videos on these but I'm also excited to see the Commander specific cards to see how weird they are.
I am definetly building a Urabrask, Heretic Praetor commander deck. Plus its the only card that I am interested in picking up. Always love Urabrask The Hidden, and I am so Hyped with building a exile matters theme deck around this new Urabrask.
I’m still surprised most content creators haven’t mentioned haunting winds. 4 cmc, hits treasures, ballista, equip and vehicles. Not a terrible card. Someone had mentioned it on the main sub. I like it a lot
My kyler deck is very excited for halo fountain and the new shield counters! I have a korvold treasure deck so of course I'm going to pick up a bunch of the new treasure generators. And I'm very excited to build an esper madness deck around Raffine! Thanks for another great video
I prefer Mental Misstep as my Sol Ring counter spell 😋 as a friend of mine once said: "every blue Commander deck should run Mental Misstep" but I guess that the Prof's standpoint of "Sol Ring should be banned" is also a valid point
I somewhat get the value in buying singles over booster packs, however buying booster packs start to seem more valuable when some singles are marked $20 plus on pre-order. So what I've been doing for a while now is buy a draft or booster box, see what high vale cards I get. Then go buy any that I may have miss that I want. It allow me to give some to my LGS and friends.
This is my list for the set Honorable mention: Dusk Mangler # 5 Titan of Industry # 4 An Offer you Can't Refuse # 3 Brokers Ascendancy # 2 Structural Assault # 1 Bootleggers' Stash
Prof casually countering someone's sol ring is just evil. I m personally hyped for Grandpa Jetmir. He is THE Naya cat tribal go-wide commander I ve been waiting for
BENNIE BRACKSSSSSSSS!!!!!! I ordered the cabaretti cacophony precon specifically for that card!!! He’ll go great in my Elesh Norn deck or maybe even be one of the alternate commanders for it like Adeline
Cemetery Tampering and Professional Face-Breaker should be on this list, probably in the top 2 or 3. Cemetery Tampering is draw 3 a turn in graveyard decks
To be honest, I'm a big fan of Riveteers Ascendancy, even though it feels like a worse version of the usual Korvold shenanigans. The thought of playing a creature for cheap with stuff like Evoke and reanimating something actually relevant is just too sweet to pass. Also, I'm not sure Halo Fountain's third ability is that relevant or easy. Untapping so many creatures requires tapping them first, meaning you either swung with them and they somehow survived (meaning you're probably winning anyways) or you got another card to tap them (meaning it's just another 3+ card insta-win combo). That being said, I love how it requires so much white mana, so it can''t just be splashed in Bant or Esper or w/e.
The creatures don’t have to survive combat because you activate fountain on priority of declare attackers. They just need to be on the board and swung with
I'm personally looking forward to the jund cards (no I'm not taking the time to memorize the new house names when I already remember the shard names. Alright fine, I'll take the long way around and just say black, green, red every time..... happy now? No? Neither am I so it works out 😆😆😆) I'm working on a kresh the bloodbraided deck (which isn't going so well since I've never run a sacrifice focused deck before) and now I can just make a ton of treasure while I sacrifice and reanimate my stuff, wonderful. Aside from that I think I'll also try my hand at angel tribal (I have a moraphon the boundless that I have been meaning to make a deck around and since this set introduces one of if not the best white mana dorks for angels (possibly the only one come to think of it) I figured "hey why not"
I’m actually wondering if Vivien will see any play in cEDH. Naya Birthing Pod decks like Blood Pod can use her for the exact same lines. The downside is that she costs more to put out, isn’t as easily tutorable, and can be attacked, although with activations Birthing Pod costs the same amount. My guess is probably not but I think she might be worth considering/testing.
I'm surprised you didn't have Bootlegger's stash as a must have commander card for green or artifact strategies. Allows for great affinity play and can ramp insanely fast, allowing none of your untapped Lands to go to waste.
Is Witness Protection going to disrupt pauper? Other formats? Or am I just too focused on the absurdity of turning creatures like Void Winnower or Managorger Hydra into a “Legitimate Businessperson”?
I'm glad to see Urbrask so cheap and will be picking him up. Professional Face Breaker is going to be huge. Also hoping Even the Score can be made to work as good as it looks. Giada, Font of Hope is another big one.
that last one does cost 7 mana | | | | | | | for what's often going to be discard 1 and then mill that doesn't matter for several turns and they wont be incentivised to trigger the one sided board wipe
I’m very surprised that bootleggers stash didn’t make your list or honorable mentions. Imo it’s THE best commander card to come out of this set. I’d hear an argument for it being 2nd but it’s up there. It’s insanely good.
The real trick is "an offer you can't refuse"-ing your own spell to turn two cards into two treasures. (Or more, if you have ways to double the effect.) And then it also works as a counterspell late-game, in case you need that.
For my Feather deck I think "Boon of Safety" is an auto include. a shield counter every turn with a scry 1 is just too good. "Hoard Hauler" is a good crew vehicle for Magda cEDH. "Glittering Stockpile" seems good too for ramp and as a castable treasure to sac for Magda. "Mage's Attendant" seems like a must include in Brago getting a 1 mana counter spell for free with every flicker effect seems too good.
Draft boosters are for drafting. Set & collector boosters are for ripping open, but they're a big gamble. Some planeswalkers make non-legendary token copies of themselves
@@mantasignatavicius1964 Neither. If you are looking for specific cards, buy singles. Set boosters are there when you want to entertain yourself by gambling a little. You should crack a pack for the fun of cracking a pack, no matter what is in it.
@@alexandredesbiens-brassard9109 thank you for idea, then I will crack few packs from bundles for myself, play sealed with draft packs and just buy singles
Well "Sleep with the Fishes" IS a card so its CLOSE... My uncle would definitely love "Cut Your Loses" since he like doing mill decks. I'm definitely liking the Shakedown Heavy or Queza, Augur of Agonies or Rabble Rousing or even Lord Xander. I'm still a normal MTG and is just starting to dive in into commander and purchased that Phantom Premonition Commander Deck since can't think yet of any good ways to play Commander. Would think of putting Scheming Fence or maybe Toluz
I like the design of the vampire legendary, Evelyn, the Covetous. I am very glad that the library exile effect applies to all players, and not just to opponents.
I've wanted to build a threaten deck for a while and I think Ziatora is the perfect leader for it. Steal your creature, swing it at you, then sack it for treasure? I hadn't even thought about running treasure synergies but that's a great idea!
Smugglers Share and Bootleggers Stash are two very good cards. Smugglers Share bc its another version of smothering tithe and goes great in tandem with it, and bootleggers stash because it makes any kind of green deck that cares about sacrificing permanents, like Ziatora with Mayhem Devil and Juri, Master of the Revue, or in something like Yurlok with Price of Glory. Fantastic degeneracy is inbound there.
I think you're really sleeping on Riveteer's Ascendancy. Sure, while sacrificing tokens is more popular in commander, this card's going to be a haymaker in any sort of deck that doesn't just sacrifice tokens breathing some new life into some classic Jund legends
I was thinking about brewing an Esper "taxes" deck to just annoy people. I'm like the looks of Raffine, Scheming Seer because it kinda protects itself with Ward 1 and has flying to help trigger the Connives X ability.
Giada, Font of Hope looks insanely pushed for Angel Tribal. Can easily be the commander or part of the 99. Arcane Bombardment also looks like a hilarious build around.
I am looking forward to her for my kaalia angel tribal deck. a cheap angel with the ability to boost my later angels and it is an etb instead of cast trigger.
Guys, Keeps actually works. I've been following the instructions strictly for about 6 months and my bald spot is filling up!! Just make sure you're using quality shampoos and conditioners too Just putting this out there in case some of you are hesitant
It's funny how I have not felt the need to buy new standard boosters since War of the spark😅. These days I only buy stuff for commander because the standard rotation is out of this world considering how quickly wizards releases new standard sets. For example the moment I got somewhat familiar with kamigawa there were already talks and spoilers about new capenna.. That kind of quenched my urge to buy kamigawa cards😂. Well I guess I just get excited for the new version of jumpstart instead 😁. I have had tons of fun with the current jumpstart set and I really hope wizards will continue to build upon this product line/ idea.
I kind of want that cat demon Jetmur for my Rin and Siri deck. Also found it neat that there is an instant that could turn a 0/1 Clever Luminancer to a 6/6 this card is called Antagonize.
