$295K for the pie house is a freaking bargain. Here in Sydney, Australia that size house would easily be a million dollars or more in 2022.

What constitutes a small house depends upon one's point of view..... Average house sizes vary around the world: Australia = 214m2, US = 201m2, Germany = 109m2, Spain = 97m2, UK = 76m2, China = 60m2. So how small is small?

How well would these tiny eco-friendly homes hold up during a hurricane/tornado/earthquake though? That's the question I don't see being asked.
@JMFSpike
@JMFSpike 2 года назад
That was the first thing that came to my mind when watching this. Pie shaped is not so bad because it widens out. A skinny house between two bigger buildings would be just fine, but what if it's not between buildings? It better be made of brick! But even then, if it's really tall it'd still be a concern. If you're going to do something crazy like that, you should definitely make sure you do it somewhere where natural disasters are almost completely nonexistent. You'd have to live in a valley to eliminate the Tornado risk though.

Well, my approximately 200 year old L&N Railroad bunk house is 17 feet by 45 feet two stories with now enclosed two story porch along one side. So, it is smaller inside than it looks outside as you drive by. Still, with all the interior doors lined up along one side on the first floor, shotgun house style, the rooms are of a decent size. The single bathroom was cut out of the rear room when it was added, making that room smaller. And the stairs to the second floor are exterior to the upstairs porch, which as I said is now enclosed. All the upstairs rooms have separate entrances off the porch, but also doors between the three rooms. Non of the second floor has electrical outlets yet. This old house cost me $23,900 and will need plenty of repair and remodel to bring it up to modern standards, but it will likely be worth more on the modern market than I will have in it when it is done. Worthy investment, I think.

Out of all the homes, the skinny house in Japan looks to be the best looking and most liveable. It makes use of it's space without looking shabby, has room to move about, and looks calming and relaxing inside. And the illusion of space is not half bad. The other homes look either mostly industrial or rundown in some way.

Where they live, animals can prey on the The cats. So unordered to keep them safe from animals and hawks they built that. Those narrow houses in London have an interesting history. They date back to the times when houses needed to have rear access for the bin men and fire department. Their was a limit to the length of the alleyway running behind the houses, so you quite often found them on a long terrace. Some were full width, while others has the rooms from an adjoining house extended over the gap above first floor level. In streets where the ground floors were shops, they also provided access via the alleyway for deliveries and for people living above the shops, often by a narrow stone staircase incorporated in the shops rear single story storeroom and staff toilet area. Since these narrow staircases had brick walls on either side and were open at the top (all part of fire escape regulations), they could completely fill with snow blowing off the flat roof of the shops rear extension. In later years, the side walls of the extension were raised a few feet above the roof to prevent this from happening.
@wilsjane
@wilsjane 2 года назад
@@zomburgerchef9587 Their are no access requirements (other than the statutory means of fire escape) for properties sold in the UK. Actually I used to live in a apartment with 1 and a half bathrooms, but we didn't call it a half bathroom obviously. We nick named the bathroom the "closet bathroom" becuse it was relatively small, there was room to move a small bit, but that's it. I dont know why I felt the need to comment this, but still! Also love your videos!

“The kitchen, dining room, and living room seamlessly and spaciously flow into one another”… otherwise known as a trailer home. And no. Walls are a beautiful and necessary architectural wonder, and for one simple reason. They create “rooms”. And just like the lack of walls so widely accepted by the previous generation (with some equally wild selling of the idea via HGTV, BHG, and similar outlets) to make them palatable. The only people truly making a killing on these things are the developers. The cost of NOT building actual rooms anymore, is never reflected in the actual price, just as in those tiny urban “starter homes”. $335,000 for a slice of a house barely 500sq feet? You would think the reduction of materials required, less labor and time as well, would cheapen it up a little. To be honest, I wouldn't feel this way except for the fact that people are exploiting other's desire to live more responsibly. While they in turn charge buyers outrageous sums and then move out to the suburbs to massive houses taking up acres and acres of land. Nothing like creating a marketing fog that enables the greedy to profit off of the easily taken, yet good intentioned. In essence, we've been sold a bill of goods, playing on our desire to be ecologically responsible, etc., except with a caveat. The developers make a killing, selling a shack that looks good, but within a month is guaranteed to lead to some serious buyer's remorse. We're indeed reaching a population level where warehousing just the poor and elderly is not enough, we have to do the same with our young, upwardly mobile as well. Only to sell this to them, developers have to trick them in much the same way they tricked their parents into believing walless expanses of a 2500 sq. ft. house was somehow a thing everyone really wants -- because they saw it on tv. Only this time it has to play to the current generation's ideas of personal responsibility, hipness level, and a sense of social conscience. But it is because it isn't coming from the right place or spirit, that I consider it so phony.

Cute house, but, the opening picture of this video is quite deceptive. I thought the whole house was just three feet wide. Yet, it expands at one side to accommodate larger things. I was like - """ There's no way someone could live in a 3 ft wide house ! """ Then, I saw how it expands. 😉
