Nurses who are brought here on Nurse visas are getting ripped off big time! I work as a Agency Support Worker earning £2000 per week which works out at about £7K-8K per month depending on how many hours I have worked. My advise to you all is always try and join Agencies. You can still keep your permanent job for purposes of your visa requirements but try and register with one Agency as your side hustle for days you are off. You will thank me later!

My first year in the UK, I made so many rookie mistakes even though I was on a student visa and had limited hours to work. 1. You don’t want to start shopping too soon. You don’t know your way around the area or the shops you can get the best deal and value for your money. So this girl here went shopping at designer stores for things I didn’t even use. 2. You have a number of days to return items you don’t want after purchase. Check the returns policy of the company. If I knew that sooner, I would have returned a lot of things I splurged on. 3. I paid an all inclusive Accomodation, that means all my bills were included. It sure took away most of the headaches but I realized between school and work and travels, there were some days I wasn’t really at home and I could have saved up that money in bills if I paid separately for it. 4. Depending on where you grew up, you may be used to the community life, where you can spend lots of money on friends and all that. You have to be smarter here, you shouldn’t let anyone stay with you bills free, they should contribute. Ofcourse you can spare a couple of days or weeks but remember you will pay bills and two people are more likely to consume more water and electricity than one, 5. If you are not very financially disciplined, shop online for things including groceries, this way, you don’t have a ton of stuff so accessible you can easily pick and swipe your card. Buy things in bulk but be careful as they usually have short life spans. 6. Don’t wear things you buy too soon, have a breathing period where you can decide if you really need what you bought, if you can’t justify it, then return it. 6. If you can share accomodation, by all means. I like my privacy though so that ate a bit of my finances. I was able to save 10k. I worked 20 hours every week and worked full time during the holidays, about 40 hours. I saved aggressively, I was able to do this because I was a scholarship student so I had my bills sorted, and my family was very supportive. Needless to say, I had good finance practices to keep my expenses in check. Trust me I splurged a lot sha but I worked harder to reimburse myself. I will have done a lot better as tons of expenses could have been avoided but it was a good year. My job paid 11.50-13 pounds per hour, so this means I had to save from the allowances I have whilst still living a baby girl life. Also, whilst working in Nigeria, I saved a lot in foreign currency though I earned in Naira so it was helpful.

Trust Naija woman, by the time I landed Cleveland Ohio, my host (white) said, "oh, glad you came with winter jacket". I said in my mind, " before nko, naira to dollar na N350 oo, this jacket na only N1,000 ($3) in Naija, I prepare come!!". I had the food I would eat for 6 months (rice, garri- cassava flakes, egusi - melon, ogbono- I don't know the English name🤣, crayfish, dry pepper, noodles, name it). The only thing I regretted I didn't buy in Nigeria was the $10 Gabes warm leggings. N3,500 for warm leggings I could have bought for just N500 in Naija!! But then, it was fun.

This is so interesting and from another perspective! Don't beat yourself up over your savings. I can't believe how cheap it is where you are. In London, you cannot get a single room for the price you paid for your two bed apartment, I'm so shocked. Although your salary is good you would struggle to save well if you were in London. You can save even more if you get things from places like facebook marketplace. I have saved many thousands over the years that way.

It’s completely normal to spend that money. You at least saved. Because there are people that owe so much money.
