"Don't send a rabbit to kill a fox" is the best line. Aramaki in a nutshell!

There was a lot that worked in this movie. The framing of this scene is a great example -- it reminds me of old an old crime movie. It's kitsch that he outshoots three goons by using a briefcase as a shield, but it felt like something out of the anime to me. A lot of the visuals and the sets were really cool, and the costume and weapon designs by Weta Workshop were as strong as ever. But they took a very thoughtful and esoteric media franchise with TONS of source material (from Shirow's original manga from the 1980's, the first or second animated film, and both Stand Alone Complex seasons) and made it into a generic action-thriller. Almost all of the older Ghost in the Shell media is made for repeat viewing and contemplation, especially Shirow's original work. This film had so much space to make a commentary on technology, identity, and human relationships with the hindsight of how technology has affected us culturally/socially since the original GitS works were released. It wasn't impossible to make a compelling live-action GitS movie, but it was clear to me from the first trailer release that the wrong people were calling the shots. And the most disappointing thing about it is that it had a lot of scenes like this that were SO CLOSE to something compelling that I could picture a better version of the movie.
