Last year I visited Warrior Nation MMA, where I learned a valuable lesson: don’t stand and bang with bigger opponents 😂. Nothing but respect for each other though. We spoke about it after, and our second round was very light and controlled!

I appreciate how you continue to be objective and humble about what happened and how you are accountable for your actions in these kinds of situation, I'm definitely guilty of mutual escalation with bigger sparring partners myself. But yes, big guys don't know their own strength 😂

I've got a fun story about this. When I was 15, I was 165cm tall and 60kg. I sparred with a lean 130kg, 190cm, 30 year old pro-kickboxer who knocked me a quarter meter into the air with a back kick to the liver. I don't know where the blood came from, but I spit a little bit up and almost blacked out. How did he respond? "Are you okay"? No. "Sorry about that"? No. He said, "Jesus, your abs are weak!" Now, I'm sure it felt that way to him, considering he was over double my weight. However, there's not a lot of physical pain I wouldn't take over that again, lol!

Nick definitely has power. He did start to feel the low kicks and stopped planting like an oak tree after 2:26 . 100% agreement. Stand and bang with a big opponent is never a good plan. Chop and evade! Eventually the tree will fall...

As a big dude, I especially love watching these types of videos before sparring! It helps me 1. Get ready for the movement of smaller partners & 2. Prepare myself to move like someone with a smaller body 😅 atleast that's what I'm trying to accomplish... Love the stuff Jeff, always referencing you to my Muay Thai classes 🙏

Another great video Jeff! I really like watching you reflect on how things can escalate, even if the person who started it may not be doing it on purpose or even realize it. As someone who likes to keep it light and technical most of the time, it reminds me about the need to keep a cool head even if your opponent does something they shouldn't

Sparring with a big difference in weight is always challenging! I completely understand that my 50% is a lot for smaller fighters, and I try to stay mindful of the weight and power gap while sparring. However, us bigger guys tend to be slower at a give intensity than the smaller guys, and when a smaller fighter is taking advantage of the speed difference to land shots it's a very similar situation to when we use our power. The only way us big guys can close the gap in speed is to increase explosiveness, which will increase the power of the shots. At both levels, there's gotta be a relaxing of ego. The best sparring is where both guys give and take IMO. Anyways, great sparring footage and great conversation fodder. Love the vids, as always.

@faidutore

That's exactly what I wanted to talk about. I'm a light weight and I know this gives me an advantage when sparing softly with a big guy. Cause I can boxe very fast without a lot of power. In the video Chan says the big guy should adapt his power... Well okay but then you should adapt your speed, otherwise it's easier for you to touch him. I think it's hard for heavy weight to go fast without power. When not doing competition it's always nice to adapt your level so both people can share a good time together.
@theKashConnoisseur
@theKashConnoisseur 11 месяцев назад
@@faidutore Definitely harder for heavyweights to move fast without power! When your arms and legs are 2x the size of your opponent's, it takes a lot more power to get them going fast lol. And a lot more power to control the strike as it lands, as well. At the same time, I don't put blame on either guy. At a certain point there was a mutual escalation, and afterwards they both talked it over which is exactly the right thing to do. From my experience, the more you can communicate with your sparring partners, the easier it is to have mutually beneficial training sessions.
@Jaburu
@Jaburu 10 месяцев назад
one way to punch lighter and faster if you are heavy is opening the fist in the glove. an open fist can still hit hard but you have more control
@staarfajter922
@staarfajter922 10 месяцев назад
When I do headshots I relax before hit (maybe retract a bit to) so I can do fast explosive punches that only touch. Same with kicks to the body unless they catch and sweep me then I keep the power high and bounce off instead. Im around 71kg and this works well for me but Im not sure if this works for heavier dudes but I think it should. Example is try to hit the bag as fast as you can but as gentle as you can.

I really think you were in the bad here. Nick Is keeping really calm even after the really hard kicks you are trowing. Even if the big swing is trow and it feels strong he can still control the hit before landing. Also remember that this is your work and life, and i don't know if this guy Nick is just an amateur or doing this as a hobby. If you are more experienced you should be able to back of for 5 seconds and lower the tempo and control your energy. :)

This one is like a bad relationship, things would be perfect if they could just communicate better😂. It offers so many valuable reminders and shows how things can escalate easily. We have everything on display in this one including desperation, misreading of an opponent, heavy telegraphing, failure to adjust to the opponents size and weight, along with a sickening amount of ego. I love it. The cornicopia of egos is of course offset by the display of phenominal cardio and breath control. You handled this one so well. You are absolutely fearless and this manifests in so many ways here. You hold your own impressively well, like a MA version of Optimus Prime negating the size/weight differential. You still manage to have an admirable level of fluidity and flow (think Optimus Prime with a lot of karate and jeet under the metal). Nick's nod is super intimidating! But also very cage rattling. He has a load of power and that power is consistent even after a few good hits. I like his pace. Initially I was hoping for one of you to dial it back and hoped that it would soon be followed by the other. Obviously I was expecting too much;) After the nod that changed to me wanting you to move in with an aggressive barrage. If ever Nick is ever in a street fight, that nod is going to be like waving a red flag at a bull;) It's one of those times where you sit down afterwards and realize that neither party intended it to be this way and that both opponents are nice and respectful, just a little ego reactive at times. This was a good one, ego filled but also very valiant on both parts, well done.

Jeff, I have so much respect for you fighting skills. I also appreciate you being transparent with how your ego often gets activated easily. This is something more gyms need to emphasize. There is a lot that is suboptimal in many traditional martial arts schools, but, IF they are doing it correctly, they are usually good at teaching proper character traits like respect, self-discipline, and focus, which form a basis for dealing with ego. These are all skills taught in traditional Asian martial arts. Currently, MMA has a more American flavor of promoting competition and aggression. Both approaches obviously have their benefits. However, I hope the next phase of MMA won’t just take and choose techniques, but also incorporate the deeper lessons of the martial arts. 🙏✌️

I'm wise enough now not to get my ego involved, but there's a difference between that and someone who doesn't listen to a call to calm down, and then it's just a case of given some good, clean shots under control to help them comprehend. I had to do exact this last week, and they kind of got the message. Even then, our teacher had to explain to my sparring partner how one should acknowledge a shot rather than just ignore it and punch back (if you don't acknowledge, and pause momentarily you don't understand that a proper shit would have meant you could not have thrown that punch/kick/whatever). Good video and breakdown. Keep it coming.

Jeff, i think I'm not the only one who would like to see more vloggy type of your video besides sparrings. I wonder where you are, who are these guys etc. Even last time, when you showed some backstage of that bodyguard's sparring was cool. What do you think about this? Cool video, like always.

Who cares? the dude came right back and threw his own full power leg kick. Either way it was on after that.

2:50 Jeff. I realized that if you do pressure moves like the push kick, it makes opponents default to their original stance. I think he was hiding the left leg to the back as it's already starting to hurt, hence the change of stance. When you push kicked him, him changed to a different stance where you could quickly move in for another inside kick.

i know jeff knows not to stand n bang w heavier guys. i think he was just in a mood and wanted to get the guy back ; many big dudes arent really strategically fighting, they're just acting like punks and striking too hard. i dont blame jeff one bit from hitting back hard. jeff's analysis is great and such a nice contribution for all of our learning. thanks to jeff.

Great video. went through this a few weeks back. I swear we really don't mean to throw stuff with that much heat its just physics😂 but 100% agree-- just throw it back cause we need to know what it feels like too that's the only way we learn how to control our shots so we can all get better 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
