5:03 - Tip 6 - Use head movement as a second line of defense
5:48 - Tip 7 - Take head off centreline when punching

Also, as a beginner, aside from sparring with partner who's not trying to give you brain damage, I have found that wearing head protection gear with solid face shield, like what they used in Kudo for example, helps you learn faster. When you wear a head gear you're more confident in advancing and making mistakes, mistakes that you can learn from without giving yourself early injury

Amazing tips. Protect your brains! One thing that helps me personally is to worry less about "perfectly" slipping or avoiding punches, and not getting discouraged when I get partly touched - turning a straight hit into a glance or skim still reduces damage, and it's part of the progression (like that weightlifting analogy). Just keep that good defensive shell in your pocket and know when to fall back on it, like Jeff did with that one guy in the street challenge.

Can you do a video (maybe you have one already) on what type of defense you want to use in mma specifically because I’ve gotten headkicked in sparring due to too much body hinging and stuff
@MMAShredded
@MMAShredded 3 месяца назад
You can get head kicked with a tight high guard, you can get head kicked throwing a jab, you can get head kicked from doing anything. Sometimes you just get caught. I wouldn't blame the type of defence you are using, but just your skill. Of course, using a high guard definitely decreases that chance of being kicked in the head.

Jeff, can you make a video on the exercises you do to keep yourself this agile? Focusing on the hips and shoulder movement for quick in/out of pocket evasion…what are you doing yoga/core exercises? I believe a lot of your quick defensive movements relies on your hip and its flexibility. I assume this helps your torso and your head evade faster from the bladed stance.

I would say the stance itself and being on the balls of your feet is what helps the mobility and movement!

It could but many other factors affect your chances of having debilitating brain damage like genetics, diet, body composition and other general health markers. Also your defense and time between sparring plays into it as well. Eat brain healthy food and having a trusting social community as well as doing other things that keep your brain active and learning are good ways to insulate yourself against the chances of CTE.

Alternative title: 8 Tips that LEVELED up my Head Game
@stmartinhk
@stmartinhk 11 дней назад
A lot of the time here punches are being avoided NOT through head movement but by moving out of range, which I suppose is fine if you have the space to do that AND ARE NOT INTERESTED IN HITTING BACK! But as any pro wil tell you, one very basic reason we move the head (weave, lean, duck, level change, weight change, etc) is SO THAT WE CAN HOLD OUR POSITION. There is little advantage to be gained if we work to get a hitting position - which is a basic goal, right? - but then we abandon it as soon as the other guy starts swinging back...as we see being demonstrated here.

@MMAShredded
@MMAShredded Месяц назад
it works the best when you are tall and long!!!
@JamesJohnson-pz8pu
@JamesJohnson-pz8pu 3 месяца назад
If elbows are allowed, I strongly advise against slipping into the pocket and simply tying up. In Muay Thai, if you get elbowed on the shoulder blade or the back of the neck (which is perfectly legal), it can seriously injure you and hinder your performance for the rest of the fight. However, its a brilliant technique in boxing and even in Kickboxing Superlek often backs up and as his opponent comes forward to chase him, he goes forward and ties up to get out of tricky positions
@MMAShredded
@MMAShredded 3 месяца назад
In my humble opinion, you can't generate enough power to cut or do damage when your opponent is that tight into your armpit. By the time you try to create space to elbow, your opponent will be gone.

Hey Jeff, I have a question. I watchers a video from James Vick in which he said that if you wanna get good as fast as possible in MMA, focus on boxing (the first 2 years). I am from the Netherlands so I wondered why that for example wouldn’t be better because I also learn to deal with low kicks for example. I did Taekwondo for 15 years and was quote competitive and I did some kickboxing while I was abroad for a month and low kicks killed my legs. To the point where I had issues walking for 3 days after training. I quit Taekwondo now because I want a new challange so started training MMA last week. I am curious what a pro like you who did Muay Thai thinks is a good idea.
@MMAShredded
@MMAShredded 3 месяца назад
I think it is really all preference. I think Muay Thai is better to start than Boxing though because you quickly realize and get used to defending punches kicks elbows and knees, whereas boxers take awhile to adapt to all the other strikes.

I love your head movement, Jeff. Why don't your sparring partners go to the body more often? Feint their way in, wait for you to move, plant, go for a hook to the body, a shovel punch, or lead uppercut. Either counter punch or wait for the distance and land a solid leg kick. Can't check kicks and move your head simultaneously the way you do. I know it's easier said than done, but I feel like they aren't really looking or exploiting your vulnerabilities when using head movement. Only one or two people went after your legs or body. I'm not saying I can do it, but there are top teir fighters who could.

reguarding tip 8 when i spar the less experienced in my gym they tend to get frustrated and start throwing hard, even though i tell them to keep it light, this led to 2 injuries of mine after that now i only spar with experienced adults (i'm 16 yrs Girl) which ofcourse this is frustrating because they're all bigger and mostly men leaving me less confident to practice head movement and any techniques i want to try. theres only 3 partners i trust to try new techniques on , so was wondering if you have any more tips for me ? even just for building confidence thanks Cailin sorry this is like an email but just thought i'd ask ;)

Question, doesn't using big slips like this leave you open for knees/kicks to the head? Of course against a non skilled fighter you'd likely fight in a street situation theres less risk of that, but agaisnt someone who knows what they're doing, couldn't they potentially see those head movements, and feint a punch and instead throw a knee or kick?

Can anyone tell me if judo and freestyle wrestling have a big difference when it comes to defending against muay thai clinch? And even if the difference is big, to what extent would a freestyle wrestler be able to at least not get knocked out if caught in a well-placed muay thai clinch? And the judoka, what is the chance of him being knocked out in this type of clinch?

wrestling will definitely help you against clinching

Why do you keep your hands down? Is it ok to keep my hands up or it works better with the hands down?

Against top fighters, are you not scared they'll kick you in the dome when you lean over so hard?
@MMAShredded
@MMAShredded 3 месяца назад
depends on the situation. If I can manage to stay on the outside. If they close the distance, I will bring my hands up and be safer. In reality, going against better guys, you're gonna lose regardless. But just remember, this is a video on head movement, not how to win a fight. I use a lot of head movement also because it's extremely fun. With that said, we see several UFC champs like Dominick Cruz, Tj Dillashaw, ISrael Adesanya, Anderson Silva and more, pull off head movement against the highest level of strikers.

Ryan Garcia should watch this video lol. He needs better footwork (angles) and better head movement.

I'm a bit confused about the first tip. Keep a "glove to glove" distance when both fighters arms are extended. Isn't this way too far away? And you also don't seem to keep this distance, it looks more like glove to opponents chin.
@MMAShredded
@MMAShredded 3 месяца назад
glove to chin after he has thrown the punch, but before he threw that punch, I was much further away
@R3dCol0r
@R3dCol0r 3 месяца назад
@@MMAShredded Hmm I see 🤔 And by much further away you mean literally 2 entire arm lengths? When both fighters are touching their gloves with their extended jabs?
