@@GausDIY "In fact, any electronic device you charge is at risk of fire. " That's an inane statement which shows you don't know how to carry out a basic risk assessment. Some devices are simply not designed to be charged and have a much higher risk of causing issues than devices that are designed to be charged.

This is not a how to restore one trip batteries, this is flogging a dead horse. Getting an apparent immediate readable voltage does not mean a recharged battery. It wont have much if any ampere hours in recharged storage. Its slightly dangerous too, they may explode in your face. A one time battery works at the principle of sacrificing 2 different metals according to galvanic series (search and read) exposed to an acidic solution that corrodes the least valuable metal. Battery dies at the depletion/total corrosion of that lesser metal. But hey, I like your home made battery array. You could make some nice power packs for rechargeable batteries with those. Go shop some 18650 Li-ions or so and have some fun. Long range e-bike? Electric moped ? Solar panel power bank ? Lots of people throws away power tool batteries when they fail, usually its only a cell or two that has gone bad and there are usually many in each pack, each holding 3,6V as healthy. Both most battery power tools and most laptops uses 18650 Li-ions. There´s a good and free waste reuse supply.

And the easy part is that you don't need to make that gadget, you can use any battery charger and it would work...

People have been recharging "dry" batteries for over 100 years. Competently designed systems use a variable power supply with a (milli) ammeter in series to minimize the chance of excess current causing the batteries to overheat and burst. The best results have been mediocre with the recharged cells having but a small fraction of the amp-hour capacity of new ones.

We have a charger that can recharge ordinary batteries.(I bought it about 20 years ago and its called battery manager ultra) It trickle charges them. I have used it for years without problem. A battery charged with it will work a second time and run out more quickly. It can then recharge again and each time runs out faster. I think about 3 times is the limit. The better batteries do best with it. Very cheap batteries you only get one recharge and then they just wont . It shows a screen with how its doing, whether its viable and turns it off when its done. You cant do lithium or damaged batteries with it. Your idea seems similar but I suppose you havent got a safety measure so you must monitor it by eye and not leave it when charging.

Ive recharged regular batteries for decades now. Yes some batteries when recharged will burst and leak all over the enclosed charging box so i set the box upright so if that happens the acids will only leak on to the lower pad. Ive recharged several two or three times before discarding. Never had any of them explode like a bomb although that can be a possibility so the reason for the enclosed box as an additional safety. Last five years i only charge nickel-cadmium, lithium, metal-hydride types. Got lazy to clean the box when one of the older lead-acid batteries would leak.

Use a battery charger, for any battery type. But, alternate dry cell batteries with the nondry cells to act as a capacitor in the circuit. The dry cell batteries will prevent the nondry cells from overheating and melting the plastic insulation. You can reuse any type of batteries about 8 times before oxidizing gases or deteriorating conditions sufficiently reduce quality.

This is really easy to test if he is right or wrong. 1 Take a new battery and test how long it takes to get empty with a device. 2. Take his "charged" battery and see the difference in working time. I would guess that the charged battery gonna last about 30% of the time a new battery lasts. So it might be a "temporary" solution but not a miracle one. I would rather use lithium batteries since they are cheap enough, have more power, and are truly rechargeable. Or just use a Ni--Mh rechargeable battery like Eneloops or others since they are cheap enough too.

At first: You could also generaly use or buy rechargeable batteries and safe charging devices. there are also some good and safe AAA and AA 1,5 V LiIon batteries chargable with normal USB C cables and USB power supply. I think that would be cheaper and better in the long run. and safer. And you can spare these "simple" makeshift solutions ...

I have done this for years and I am going to give you certain facts. 1- Never recharge them more than once 2- Never recharge them for more than 1:30 hours 3- Always recharge in a safe area and away from flammable objects 4- Never recharge if you are going to leave them unsupervised 5- You can use a rechargeable battery charger 6- Once recharged, the useful life of the battery is 50% of its previous life time 7- It is a lifesaver when we do not have the possibility to go shopping or when we do not have time to go 8- The first test should be in a patio or a safe area of the house, since they were not designed to be recharged, some of poor quality could deteriorate easily, heat up to the extreme, release some liquid or even catch fire. 9- Better buy rechargeable batteries, I have been recharging my batteries for more than 5 years and they continue to work perfectly and I have saved a fortune 10- Free Palestine!

A voltage of 1.7V after "recharging" doens't tell anything about the capacity. To put it simple:There are rechargeable batteries and non-rechargeable battries. Never try to recharge a normal battery. It's a waste of money and time. Besides, it's dangerous, as they can explode

What if charging is only attempted in a safe location (with no volatile substances nearby), and voltages and temperatures are monitored very closely while wearing strong protections against explosions which could cause permanent damage to eyes, ears, skin, face, other body parts, clothing, or could cause fire or explosive impact damages. Would require strong containment which could also explode with projectile fragments. Yes, potentially very dangerous and life altering. Might be better to find 99cent store, & maybe even faster. But great video otherwise.

This idea is creative but I would not try recharging "non rechargeable" batteries. I tried that with a certified battery charger and a few of them were expanding like they were ready to explode and cause a major fire and personal injury. This was many years ago but never tried that again. I always use certified battery chargers that only can charge "rechargeable batteries. That's why they are manufactured for those that need to reuse batteries. I do give you full credit for trying to invent a battery charger for "regular" battery types. That would be incredible if it succeeds and gets patented. Update, I saw the full video and you did succeed. Looks like this method may work, but did you use heavy duty batteries or did you use alkaline batteries. I tried with Duracell Alkaline and those were the ones that expanded severely, even on one attempted recharge.

personally my experience was while its possible to recharge alkalines if they are not to far gone it increases the chance of leaking and if it damages one good product there goes all your savings. i lost may favorite flashlight to something like this.

The method used to check multiple batteries is to line them up with the polarity to your right, (if you are left handed) and then start at the battery furthest away and work towards yourself, as you run across an unsatisfactory battery, you simply put enough squeeze on it to pull it out an flip it off to your left side, usually leaving a void so you don't forget where you left off, Now I still owe you nine (9) minutes of waisted time, Or is that time owed back to me ?
