If you are in Heaven though.... Meeting Santa and a million dollars might just be the entry prize and there is the whole you are probably dead thing too....
Don’t feel bad..these games are pretty hard and we didn’t have the internet back then. I went back and beat these games as an adult with the power of the internet lol
True comedic genius. A nearly five minute love letter to all of DKC music and then shows three seconds of the underwater level and doesn't play any of the music (which is arguably some of the best game music ever). Dunk knew what he was doing lol.
My favorite thing about dunkey, even more than the humor, is seeing how genuinely passionate and excited he gets about the things he enjoys. His excitement is so contagious, I've never played donkey Kong and I watched the whole video with a big-ass grin

Donkey Kong's soundtracks is the type of music you would listen to when you feel sad, they'll immediately brighten your day up with their funky melodies.
As much as i hate the DKC games....the music is all right yeah. Ok, just to give more background: i tried to play these games multiple times years ago and my issue always was that the roll and run were a single button. I'd always accidentally start rolling and so on. I actuallyy like the flow of the levels especially in DKC 2 but never beat any of the games
@@krewkid82I’m gonna head-canon that the absence of commentary tells us that if you know the song, you know, and thus you know Dunkey’s thoughts by default.
that snow theme is so brilliant because you hardly ever survive more than a minute, so when you do hear the second part of the track it becomes as tense as it feels to stay alive
@@Asterra2 Yep, that's why he put it at the very end to talk about graphics, he knew everything that could be said about that song still isn't enough lol
@@TingSing There are so many great tracks that I missed: "castle theme", "nuts and bolts", "jib jig", "rockface rumble", "Lockjaw's Saga" are some of them
this is probably my fav video Dunkey has done bc it resonates so much with me. i used to play DKC2 over and over as a kid and the music is what always stuck with me the most. the composers were tasked with just making some music for a monkey video game and ended up creating some of the most instantly recognizable, fun, and catchy tunes ever put in a game right alongside some straight up transcendental masterpieces. shit goes so hard. shit goes absolute bananas.
@@ZigealFaust i traded in my SP years ago for credit towards a DS and while i loved my DS i do really miss having the SP. that was the best incarnation of the Game Boy imo. can't believe it took them that long to put a backlight in one lmao. only thing that sucked was playing original GB games on it and having the cartridge stick out so far lol.
David Wise the legend, made all these tracks in his 20s, and had to overcome snes hardware limitations to make it happen. He inspired an entire generation of people around the world and showed them, along with Rare, how amazing games can be in the 90s
@@KevinJennissen People be like: "Oh yeah, this guy is great and all, but don't forget the woman. She was the best ever, how could you mention any man without mentioning a woman, what is this sexism?!"
3:54 The fact he gets through that particular portion of the map without the bird is seriously one of the greatest video game feats I’ve ever witnessed.
As someone that's literally listened to Donkey Kong country OST as a go to for music my entire life and wishing someone talked about the magic that is the OST, I'm so happy to see this
lost my grandma two years ago and this was our favorite game we would play together really just brings you back to a time that almost seems heavenly, huge props to dunkey for giving the soundtrack it’s flowers because it gives me chills and brings me back everytime I hear it, Love You Me Mom❤
David Wise is truly one of the people who really helped advance video game music, because the music is so much a part of what gives Donkey Kong Country its vibe. The music just fits each level and is so insanely catchy but also deep in scope.
@The extremely sad but buff worldrescueing milkman You're right! Though if it was conscious, there'd be an extra level of curiosity as to why Dunkey would go out of his way to reference him, since Tobuscus is quite the outcast today.
David Wise, the man who composed most of DKC's soundtrack, is one of my favorite composers ever. The fact that all these tracks were painstakingly put in note by note in code just to stretch what the SNES sound chip could do is insane
David Wise was and is a wizard when it comes to music. DKC OST's are so memorable and comfy, that I used them to put my siblings to sleep when they were babys. And we still jam to the OSTs as adults now. - A truly timeless trilogy.
Crazy thing is the songs he made for it were too large for the Nintendo so he spend weeks changing waveforms to get it to be able to play and trick the Nintendo into playing bigger files. He’s a legend. Music like that literally was impossible to play on the N64 Before him
Really like the stark contrast of the last 2 videos being in depth retrospects of the series, and this one glossing over the entire gameplay, art style, and studio to gush about the OST. DKC's soundtrack is baked into this channels DNA, you can just tell Dunkey's wanted to talk about it in a video for years.
This is my favorite series you've made. I love your appreciation for a series that's unknown by this new generation. I play these games annually and it never gets old. The music, gameplay, art, level design are some of the best you will see in a platformer. The teams behind these games created something that will stand the test of time forever. David Wise created a lot of the best tracks and he really doesn't get the recognition he deserves. Thank you for covering these games!
DKC music is uncontested. There's so much to digest in every song and just like Dunkey, you can have a field day breaking down what makes every tune stand out.
Connected so much with the bonus theme. I still remember when I was a kid and I had fever, I would wake up with a crazy headache and temperature, then, I started playing the song in my head and the more it played the better I felt. These soundtracks are absolutely life-giving.
As someone who used these soundtracks to boost my mood while studying at university I can 100% confirm that they are the best human creation since potato chips.
Fun fact: David Wise did not do the tracks for DKC3, only serving as a music supervisor. Tracks were (IMHO) mostly okay with a few bangers here and there, but definitely not as memorable as the first two games.
As funny as he is, I feel enthralled learning new things from Dunkey cuz I didn’t grow up playing video games and he really immerses me into a world I didn’t experience as a kid
THANK you for also including DKC3 and not treating it as if it were so much worse than the other 2. I love all 3 games a whole lot, especially the music. You just hyped up, talking about game OSTs is a huge mood, and basically me randomly to my friends every now and then. Thanks for all of your vids Dunkey, they are awesome.
I remember as a kid thinking the underwater music from DKC was the most beautiful video game music I had ever heard so much that I recorded it on VHS using my VCR.
One thing I've loved about the OST, is the immersion behind them: Jib Jig, you hear the flag ploes, the wind and even the rain. Hot Head Bop, you hear the lava bubbling and a slight echo. Mining Melancholy, the clangs on the picks. The OST of the trilogy follows this very well, and one of the few cases, my favorite OST is Snakey Shantey, recommend watching a guy called "Sam Jammin Miller" he restored all OST of the trilogy
the soundtrack to this game was amazing. My mom was a classically trained musician and she always liked it when we played DKC. It's such a polished game. It transcends its medium.
Dunkey's brilliant way to talk to his viewers is something i never stop admiring, he could be talking about footage from an empty street where barely anythings happening and STILL make it sound interesting to the ear
Best video you've ever done Dunkey, I could watch a 2 hour video just about David Wise and these games' soundtracks, they really make you feel like a donkey
I will agree while that even though the video was a little repetitive and the voiceover was a bit annoying there really was something for everyone 7/10
It's not just David Wise! Eveline Novakovic and Robin Beanland also contributed lots of music to the original Donkey Kong Country. Eveline also voiced the main character, Joanna, in Perfect Dark
As someone who grew up putting the game on pause more than once just to enjoy the music, this is one of the most accurate reviews of all time. David Wise crafted masterpiece after masterpiece in that game. Thank you!
Speaking of masterpieces, this video is Dunkey's own masterpiece. His sensibility in editing and passion for the game is so inspiring. Makes me want to make similar videos of my own.
This might be my new favorite Dunkey video. DKC's soundtracks have been in my life for over two decades now and it made me so happy to hear someone that appreciates them just as much, if not more, than me.
@@tracerbullet85 "no video today" really highlights his creative genius, "Rating Every Rapper's Game Collection" wins it for the comedy and honestly, he's made so many great ones it's hard to rate them fairly. I think this Donkey Kong Country one just spoke to me on a spiritual level.
That was the funniest, dopest, Donkey Kong country OST analysis I've ever seen. I for one am a major DK country fan. Good to see other appreciate it today. Thanks for this! 🙇
Teasin' us this whole time with Aquatic Ambience!! Dunkey you know what you were doing! Now I have to go listen to a 10 hour version of Aquatic Ambience.
I love how his jokes are layered like an onion, so only the sweatiest can enjoy the succulent core of the beautiful humor only a black content creator could ever understand, and therefore, create.
I love that Dunkey focused on the soundtrack most of the video. The gameplay is great but the music is a major reason for why DKC is so iconic. Shoutout to David Wise, the man who composed it.
Yeah, an the end is a brilliant troll. He briefly shows the Aquatic Ambiance level (without including the song) and says gameplay & graphics are also good. Normally people only talk about the graphics and gameplay and about a single song, Aquatic Ambiance.
I will always remember this game, The game and soundtrack will forever be in my head with happy memories playing with my brother with no life difficulties. It was simplified times that I will truly miss.
I had a tear of joy while watching this video. Honestly so happy that I enjoyed this game in my youth and now. The soundtracks really built a vibe and atmosphere in the games. Thank you Dunkey for this video and thank you for making me feel nostalgic for something I loved ❤️ Edit: 2023 and am back for more Donkey Kong December!
“This is the music that you hear when you meet Santa Claus in heaven and he gives you a million dollars” that line killed me man… Dunkey, your the absolute best video game reviewer in the world! Thank you for the great content! Can hardly wait for your next video you legend!
My grandma is 90 and she still blows the dust of her SNES and plays DKC once a year. My son is 2 and I am bursting with anticipation for when I get to let him play for the first time. 4 generations later and the game is still going strong.
That level one song where the drums fade in and then it gets funky... well that has been my alarm clock song for years. I love that it starts out subtle before it gets poppin'. I can tell how long I slept through the alarm. Sometimes I wake up and it's jamming out, sometimes the drums wake me up. No matter what, I'm never upset to hear that song. It soothes me out of the dreamy sleepy state and into the waking state. I recommend it for all.
man i'm actually tearing up. DKC has by far some of my favourite video game music of all time so this makes me so happy to see it get appreciated like this. thank you, dunko.
@@fullmetalalcoholic6624 no, bad alcoholic. it is you that needs to go outside more cuz only a sad, sad person would feel the need to put down a fellow human like that.
@@fullmetalalcoholic6624 can you explain to me what actual music is? Cause I don’t see the difference between video game music and this “actual music” you’re talking about
@@fullmetalalcoholic6624 i go to concerts of "actual music" all the time, so yes i do go outside. you know what nostalgia is, right? or i guess your parents didn't give you enough attention as a child so now you need it here
@@fullmetalalcoholic6624video game music is actual music, music is supposed to evoke emotions from the audience. Why does he need to go outside when the Video Game music is doing literally exactly what it was designed to do?
Best decision I've made in a while was getting an early 2000s trinitron for free on facebook market. The old lady was just happy someone moved the 40 pound boulder out of the house for her. And now I'm playing NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, PS1 and PS2 on the best consumer display that those games were specifically designed around.
This was an unexpected surprise. I thought he was just gonna talk about DKC in general but he focused on perhaps my favorite part of Rare’s DK games: the incredible soundtrack. As he said, every 30 seconds the songs would add another layer and transform. I remember timing the first snow level to reach the checkpoint barrel by the time the fast piano comes in. It always felt so EPIC. I miss the days when videogame music put chills down my spine.
Dude fuck that snow level! It was the nemesis of my childhood for so many years. There was one barrel that always stumped me where the blizzard kicks up so it's harder to see the screen, and on those early 2000 box TVs they're even more fuzzy. Then if you fail its back to the beggining of the ice world. I got further than I ever had before In the level and missed the shot and my heart sank, but then the screen followed me as I dipped below into the SECRET BARREL! that let's you skip like half the level. I can remember so vividly the moment of distraught and then relief. Truly a gaming memory I will never forget!
@seth thomas I can definitely relate! The same exact thing happened to me. They're such amazing classic games. I'm so happy to share the whole DK series experience with my son.
Not sure if it's your jam, but Ori and the Will of the Wisps also has top tier music. I mean it's no DKC (because nothing is) but if you're looking for amazing music (game is really fun as well) it might be worth checking out :)
David Wise was also sound designer on DKC2 in addition to being the sole composer, which is why atmospheric sound effects are woven into the music as naturally as they are. The whipping sails in the wind acting as a snare drum roll in "Jib Jig" are a perfect example.
Dunkey’s appreciation for music ingrains itself into his takes on videogame experiences in a way that breaks out of the videogame youtuber mold. Good shit, Dunk
FINALLY! Ive always told people that the donkey kong country soundtrack is a masterpiece of itself but I usually get told off. Im glad that you've brought this to light, because now people can finally enjoy the beauty of this game series.
Don't forget to try out Country Returns and Tropical Freeze. Returns was a gigantic part of my childhood (I'm 16) and Tropical Freeze improved upon that game in almost every way. I'd say Tropical Freeze is the best platformer I've played so far, and that's comparing it to games like Mario and Hollow Knight.
How did you do this whole video without mentioning Aquatic Ambience? It's a straight up masterpiece and it was written about a Monkey riding a swordfish.
I love this video so much, i have been listening to these soundtracks for 25 years and I have always appreciated quality video game music. thanks dunkey!
Playing the Donkey Kong trilogy on the Super Nintendo with my father was a massive part of my childhood. He passed away a few years ago. Now whenever I listen to the soundtracks, the feeling of nostalgic melancholy is so bitter sweet it's impossible to accurately capture with words. Everybody is familiar with that sensation of pressure building up behind your eyes just before they start to well up with tears, it's like that, but I'm all alone in a meadow on a summer's day, and I don't know when I'm supposed to return home, or whether I ever had a home to begin with.
Only time will make you truly come to terms with it. Like when you get out your crusty SNES and have your kid play it with you. And you remember how your father must have felt. This connection is strong and last longer than a lifetime. Hope you stay strong
My dad introduced me to the Super Nintendo I remember still being amazed when he beat super Mario world when I was probably only 6 or 7 he passed away from a heart attack a while back and not a day goes by where I don’t wish he was here but things like those memories keep me going and remind me of the good parts of him and now I pass on those good things to my children stay strong and blessed ❤
man mr. Wise's music on DKC was so genuinely good that the hype still goes on after almost 30 yeeeears. Forever love to this games and this soundtracks
This trilogy are is My favorite game of all time. They have a special place in My heart, I grow up playing them with my father, Brothers and cousings, it was better times, those games united us. Now i'm 26 and my dad 58 and till this date we sometimes join to play this trilogy one more time for the love of it, the nostalgia and to enjoy this Masterpieces, i'm glad to see that someone else gives The love that deserves, good video!
The videos where dunkey talks about the games that he has passion for are the best. I FCKN love them. So funny and touching. I just watched these three videos and laughted my ass off. I love it, really bad
Yeah I guess those were presumed and needed no mention in the sense that we all know they're great tracks already. Though he may dedicate the next video to them. 🤔
A thing I love about Dunkey is that his bombastic style of raving touches on the wordless joy which video games make us feel-in a way that other critics refuse to because they won't express themselves. 1:00 hits the spot. I guess you could say this video goes bananas.
I have found this walk-through to be very helpful, by following the instructions you left, I was able to beat Donkey Kong Country without losing a single Kong! Thanks Dunkey.
Dunkey I've been a follower since the league days and I've watched every video you've put out since. I have to say you are the #1 RU-vidr for me especially for making this video. I've been saying for years that the donkey Kong Country franchise, more specifically donkey Kong country 2, has the best video game soundtrack of all time! Keep being goated brother!!
