I actually think they leaned into the shitty voice acting since I can hear Yuri Lowenthal and Brianna Knickerbocker in there and they're incredible VOs
When I first saw this video I hadn't heard that shenmue 3 was announced so when I watched dunkeys video and saw the "made in dreams" watermark in the corner I legit thought that this was a really impressive dreams game that dunkey was playing for a joke, oh how naive I was.....
The thing that gets me is that they *know* it's tedious. They know this is not a fun game to play. Nobody writes a quest where after you do a bunch of bullshit you *then* have to catch ten chickens on *three separate days* and has the guy introduce the task with 'you know what I want, right' with the biggest troll face in history and doesn't realise what they're fucking doing
Yeah, I think that is THE part where it becomes obvious that the developer fundementally dont understand video game storytelling and humour. If this had been a movie. That part could have been funny, since the tedious part is at the expense at the protagonist. He want to learn a move desperately and he constantly is denied, which is kinda funny. In a videogame on the other hand, the joke becomes at the expense of the PLAYER, because as a player we are essentially an extension of the protagonist and that joke is NOT funny, just annoying. The developer even admits he dont play videogames and christ does that part convey that completely.
@LKCV Actually it is a good point , because since he doesn't play game and wasn' tin the industry for so long (he was making mostly mobile phone game) he didn't witness or get involved in all the improvment games had in the past , story telling , mechanic all of that is outdated because he doesn't know about it. If you don't play games and don't get interested in it (which is what he said) and doesn't work in it either how can you comprehend and adjust or take into account what has been done and what have been understood since. The answer is simple : you can't. If that game was made 14yr ago it would have been okay-ish , nowadays it's just awfull.
@@moonbug7252 I'm new into the game, but yea i did. I mean if you have played The Witcher 1 you'd see it's same writer level. In 2nd is better than in 3rd is much better.
I've heard there's some site that a ton of game translators are being pressured on by a group that intentionally tries to ruin games coming over to NA. Even a ton of games journalists are on it too. They were responsible for Fire emblem on 3DS getting censored. Shit's fucky.
Shenmue 1 crawled on all fours so that Yakuza could walk Shenmue 2 stumbled around in a dark room so that Yakuza could run Shenmue 3 took 19 years and then fell down, dragged himself through the mud trying to get back up but then decided to stay there... At this point Yakuza was flippin' soaring the sky
Yeahhh Shenmue 3 probably killed the franchise... I mean i didn't know the franchise was so loved and people were waiting for an actual new game to come out but when i learnt that and now watching this video... I can't imagine ANYONE liked the game
@@Mysticfateee based off other reviews, it seems that many consider this a disappointment. this only exists because of crowfunding in the beginning of its development, so its highly likely Shenmue will actually be dead
Ok, Yuri Lowenthal, as well as some of the other voice actors in the cast are pretty talented. The reason the voice acting sounds like this has to be deliberate.
Direction accounts for like 50% of the quality in an actor's performance. Even the greatest actor of all time can't have a good performance with trash direction
i dunno, the first game went by like a breeze in comparison to the 2nd and 3rd... and ofcourse it as F'ing 1999. I am a shemue fan, but as what it was and how special it was 20 years ago, not because i care to ever play through it again.
Its honestly on par with the first two games. Issue is that Shenmue 2 ends of a cliffhanger with no hope of a sequel. We wait 20 years for a sequel and Shenmue 3 ends on another cliffhanger. Either the creator has titanium nuts or he's actually mentally ill
@@demetriusturner7715 Just because Resident Evil had dogshit voice acting back in the 90's doesn't mean they carry that over for an aUtHeNtIc FeEl. Capcom, like many other developers, actually tried to move their franchises forward in the modern era, and the RE2 remake shows this amazing result more than ever (hopefully 3 as well). Shenmue 3 is an upscaled dreamcast game. ZERO effort was made to make this the definitive entry to the series not only in the ways of story, but also gameplay. They didn't take ANY advantage of 2019 technology to make this the series' best entry yet. It truly is pathetic when fans defend the voice acting and all the other lackluster elements of this game...
@@JohnFortniteKennedy_ The game Desperados III has a bad guy called... Frank. No surname is ever given. Characters just ask for 'the man named Frank' and people know who they mean instantly.
@THE NEWMAKER oh my you haven't played them. Yikes we have a dipshit down here thinking he can diss this game without actually experiencing the other two.
Gabriel Silvério not even joking: I didn’t hear the news about it actually being released and took a double take when i saw the watermark because I actually thought this was made in dreams 😂
Fun fact: Yu Suzuki, the creator of Shenmue, has stated that he doesn't enjoy playing video games. Maybe he's just trying to convey that feeling through the Shenmue series and is actually doing an incredible job with it.
@@IkeOkerekeNews It really isn't. It was passable 20 years ago when most games didn't really have voice acting yet so it seemed pretty high production, but they were always a terrible chore to play. When people funded the new one I don't think they expected it to literally not improve anything since 1999 though...
@@FuzzyDlop Opinions are all subjective. It's not possible for an opinion to be objectively wrong, but if it was this would be one of the wrong opinions.
having never played this series, knowing nothing about it, only learning today how long since the last game, I'm honestly shocked Dunkey's not MORE bitter. Those chickens really taught him the meaning of patience, I guess.
What's more amazing is that the producer thought he could string players for along for another sequel despite the fact that this game barely got made and it took at least 18 years to get made.
@@MrDevious88 Best part about what you said about Shenmue 4? It's going to be another Kickstarter campaign after the reception. Worst part about it they treated the PC users like crap by pulling the old switcharoo and changing it around. Was going on Steam at first but then they changed there minds and decided to go 1 years exclusive to the Epic fail store on the PC platform AFTER people pre-order/funded it (Never pre-order guys no matter how good the game is at first) and people was rightfully pissed! They only done it for that "88/12" cut even though they had more than enough money to make a "Decent" game by you know... KICKSTARTING! At this point in time I only see them getting fucked over and ultimately putting Shenmue down to rest, It had a good run... Now if you want to have a Shenmue successor go play Yakuza. I herd that series is FAR better than Shenmue!
The fact that the voice acting is so bad despite bringing aboard a bunch of talented new big name voice actors leads me to genuinely believe that they were told to purposely make the voice acting sound bad so that it would feel like the other two games.
The voice acting isn't bad, the writing is bad. That is the consistent here. Good voice acting can't make bad writing good. Yu Suzuki is terrible at writing stories, any critical analysis of his previous projects shows this. It's either stuff without any deep plot (Virtua Fighters, Soul Caliber), or Shenmue.
Yakuza had enough time to come out, have 4 more games, have a prequel, get remastered and have two more games while Shenmue went from 2 to 3 with archaic game mechanics.
@@aptspire Knowing how the Yakuza series director literally says the series exist thanks to his inspiration of Shenmue, you would think that Shenmue itself will reach perfection in 20 year+. "Enough time" my ass. More like sega completely dick the development
It's like Yu Suzuki literally doesn't know that it's been almost two decades since the second game. This feels like it should've been released in 2005 at most.
I've watched this video countless times, it's one of my favorites from Dunkey's channel. Only just now did I notice the "Made in Dreams" logo during the grandma sequence.
Woketube, gone by 2023 Damn, now why hadn’t I thought of that? It seems so obvious now. Stupid, stupid, stupid me. Its become clear to me that I need mental help, based on your reply to my RU-vid comment on a Dunkey video. You’ve truly restored the honour of my family name.
I bought this game for 7.99 and honestly I still feel like I overpaid lol. Damn 19 year wait for this was a punch to the gut. Well another 20 years for shenmue 4
because it would have been one of many fan made games that you can play by purchasing dreams, which is itself cheaper then Shenmue 3, by the way. Also many people have been wating 20 years for this
Well there aren’t large enough time skips for Ryo to actually cover any kind of experience gap in all reality. Ryo would never be able to go from half ass training to beating a guy that is portrayed on a “grandmaster” level. Then again the game isn’t very consistent about Ryo getting better and it seems he more or less is supposed to scrape by using specific techniques in canon no matter how badly your curb stomp a boss in the game mechanics. So even if you make Ryo a beast in the game, in the canon story I believe he’s always barely scraped by and only won a lot of fights out of purely having a technique to counter the person he is fighting, and not because he has become a better overall fighter. I mean he’s constantly losing and only wins after getting a specific move. I feel like Ryo is at the same level he was at in Hong Kong when he fights in cutscenes. He doesn’t seem to have gotten any better and still needs specific moves to beat guys he should be able to dodge and just beat the shit out of like that muscle guy from fist of the North Star in Bailu village. What in the fuck bro, you can beat that giant from Kowloon walled city but not this guy? Are you kidding me. Guy swings his arms around like a retard and Ryo goes down like he never even went to Hong Kong and got off the boat from Japan in Bailu. I don’t think Ryo is going to beat Lan Di. I mean it’s not even feasible in the story anymore. Ryo isn’t talented enough in canon to ever catch up to Lan Di Becoming 10th Duan is simply gameplay shit because it holds absolutely no weight in canon fights where Ryo loses all the time. The old grandmaster handled Ryo on that boat when they sparred and then told Ryo he was trash. So in this game old guys can be strong. Well Lan Di beat the shit out of Ryo pops. Ryo never beat a high level martial artist in canon like Lan Di stomped Ryo dad. Every time Ryo faces one he is utterly embarrassed
I've worked in localization, I can instantly tell they just had an excel file of Japanese dialogue and had it translated without any context (thus the "No, I havent" replies that make no sense) , then just had the voice actors read all the lines without any direction. At no point did a native English speaker Q&A... anything.
*_"Body Check_* is a signature move, one of the eight big openings of Bajiquan" I never realised airport security was staffed with such masters of chinese martial arts
What's funnier is Yuan is a VERY common Chinese name. Going around town and asking for a Yuan is like going around town and asking for a dude named Chris. You're gonna be searching for a while if all you got to find the person is a name
What even funnier is you say Yuan and all the other NPC immediately know what Yuan you're talking about, is just like all the Yuans has a big fight and only the last Yuan standing keep the name
@@larion2336 that's a bit different, it's like asking around for someone called Bill, no one will mistake you for asking around for dollar bills, what they will mistake you for is asking around for Bill Howitzer when your looking for Bill Bobson
