I have never looked forward to new episodes in a series of content more in my life. Donkey Kong December will be a cherished tradition for years to come.
There is a limited amoutn of Donkey Kong games, you cant make it every year. What kind of crazy man would try to squeeze content out of a beloved series untill it milks out?
I played Donkey Konga a lot as a kid. Playing it the conventional way always annoyed my parents to death, so I figured out how to play it virtually silent. You could just depress both bongo buttons without slapping them, and to clap you'd just lightly tap the side of either bongo. It would produce a sharp enough noise for the inner microphone to interpret it as a clap. As such, the Konga continued on...
I was lucky, we were in our 20s when donkey konga came out and it would be part of the random hangouts with friends. 2 player mode was a huge hit, be as loud as we want. I can’t believe this came out before guitar hero, so good.
Whenever I play Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, this is how I play it. Sure, you can beat on the bongos like they owe you money, but playing it silently is the way to go.
And when there's those parts where you're supposed to clap as much as possible, you can blow air on the mic in between the bongo drums. It would register like 300 claps and I felt like a video game god
jungle beat was *quite literally* my jam as a kid 😂 i played this so much my mother bought me a new game for game cube to STOP playing the bongo maddening game LOL
@@franciscobutte yeah it's very lame how so many fans of dunkey are completely unoriginal themselves, pitiful really. take notes people, you're watching dunkey and you can't come up with your own material?? you're in the wrong place.
It’s even better when you get suspended after _”jokingly”_ threatening to stalk and dox RU-vid employees over your failed witch hunt against a smaller channel 😂
Fun Fact: Jungle Beat was the first game the ESRB ever handed an E10+ rating to. Which is completely understandable. This game goes so hard just because it can. Enemies in this game are very scary for small children (mechanized elephants, giant apes with sharp teeth, etc). DK beats the tar out of anything standing in his way. Everyone knows the rapidfire punches, but then there are these bird bosses that carry eggs, and literally the way you deal damage to them is to have DK cling onto the egg and fucking woodpecker it.
It's wild how DK Jungle Beat and Shadow the Hedgehog are two of the most notable early games with E10+ ratings, when their tones are so wildly different.
I played this game to hell and back as a kid. In fact I played it so much that I begged my parents to get me the DK bongo drums just to experience the game the way it was truly meant to be played. Aaaah.. masta pece. 👌
I really wanted to buy, I was even willing to shell out the 60 bucks to buy the bongos. But I listened to the reviews (yea I was one of those kids) too much and they were all fairly lackluster. I should’ve listened to my gut.
@@Eggs_scrambled83 same dude me and my brother beat that game with just the bongos but the fact you could do all that platforming with just those bongos was fucking fun
What's so amazing about this series of videos is that the whole time I'm expecting the typical sarcasm and satire and it's actually...not. There's a lot of truth to this stuff.
holy shit I remember hearin about this game but I honestly had no clue it was so influential on Nintendo's work... Wild that Donkey Kong December was just a silly joke last year and this year it's been full of legitimately great content
My theory is that he actually did want to do something like this last year, but the scope of the project kept growing until he had to push it back to this year. Upon which he could finally release these videos in quick succession covering all the most important games in the series. If I'm right about this then I'm very glad for the delay because it is abundantly clear from the quality of these videos that they have come from a pure passion and genuine interest in the elusive yet masterfully made series that is Donkey Kong along with its many ventures into the different types of games it has tackled over the years.
Once in high school I stayed up with my friend and we beat the entirety of jungle beat with the bongos using only our feet. very difficult experience but we pulled through
I feel like Koizumi doesn't get as much attention as someone like Miyamoto, but he definitely deserves more credit. Just about every game that's he's been involved with has been fantastic.
@@alternateenergy9685 I remember it being more consistent than clapping, but yeah slapping a piece of hard plastic over and over does not feel good on the palms.
This takes me back. I have a special connection to this game because it was one of the few games they had in the children's hospital arcade. At 10 years old I had to have brain surgery and during my recovery my Dad would wheel me down to the arcade so we could play Donkey Konga together. He loved it. Sadly he died a year and a half ago, but this is one of the memories I will cherish from him. 💕💖
Real talk - I never comment on Dunkey videos, but real props to my man here for talking about a game I was OBSESSED with as a kid. Jungle Beat in my mind was genius and just because it was a WILD way to play didn’t mean that the bongos didn’t work. It was crazy how smooth it was, and how badass DK was the whole time. Now to see that legit that one game influenced my favorite Mario games? My heart is full.
how? if you have the original hardware and game ok but nintendo has no other way to alloy people play retro games same as playstation and their shitty sub plan
@@DarkP1 I have it on wiiu Edit: also everyone with Nintendo switch online has access to a frick ton of nes and Super Nintendo games. People with online+ even have a Nintendo 64 emulator. The switch is one of the only consoles they’ve ever released without backwards compatibility. (Even the gamecube had a game boy advance adapter!)
Yeah it was the opposite for me. I had the bongos specifically for this game. I remember really liking the boss fights, laying into them with this JoJo punches.
Dude those fucking punch sequences were so satisfying. My mom got so pissed at me beating the absolute shit fuck out of those bongos because she thought I was going to break them.
You seemed to glance over how much adrenaline this game gives you. Every level goes hard as fuck and the and the music is full of mongo jams. The whole experience playing is a blissful novelty and the bongos are so kinetic and responsive. The fight against Ghastly King at the end is unforgettable and it’s a shame more people didn’t get to play it.
Hey man, this Donkey Kong series really reminded me of how much I’ve appreciated your videos over the years. Been going back and watching a bunch lately and I just feel the need to try to express something. Your videos, and I think your example more generally, have really had an effect on me. Your whimsical, humorous approach to conveying passionate, well-thought ideas consistently makes me feel like I can take a similar approach in my life. And it makes me feel like I’ll reach a place that feels like home, one day. I moved to a new country this year, so I’ll be spending Christmas with strangers. That sense of impending eudaemonia I feel when I watch your videos is really gonna help me out here. It wouldn’t be the first time you’ve helped uplift me when I doubted myself. Your best joke was Paul Creenis of Paul Beenis games. Do more Paul Creenis jokes
The GameCube era was full of ambition and great quality on Nintendo's part - it's a shame that games like Jungle Beat weren't appreciated at the time they came out, but hopefully guys like Dunkey and Scott the Woz will get people to go back and appreciate the era for what it was.
I don’t know how they’d do it but I’d actually love to see a remake of Jungle Beat. Perhaps it uses joycon motion controls like the Wii version but with DK bongo conpatability for those who have them.
I unfortunately can't see it happening, but I'm fine with it. I'll do my yearly replay of this masterpiece till I die Maybe if Mother 3 finally comes out when GBA comes to the Switch...
First time I've ever seen someone talk about Jungle Beat and I'm so happy This game was amazing, I wish I still had it because my past baby self just could not understand even a fraction of the awesomness of this game (and also how to play it correctly) It kinda had the same vibe as that one Mario kart but actually it's Donkey Kong game where to advance you had to swing the controllers one by one in the right rythm, this one was also very fun (and somewhat physical). But Jungle Beat was just so awesome it doesn't even come close to it
I only played jungle beat once, and it changed my life, that's when I fell in love with games and decided to become a developer. I've loved weird controllers since that day
man i played this game as a kid and i absolutely loved it. im so happy that dunkey loves the donkey kong series, as a kid i never realized how little it was compared to mario/luigi and other nintendo characters. jungle beat was such an incredibly fun game to me i beat it multiple times. and yeah even as a kid, with the bongo drums, that game is fuckin exhausting lmao. thank you dunkey for shedding light on these donkey kong games. donkey kong country was my favorite game though. beat that game so many times late night as a 9 year old boy playing games on my gameboy when i shouldve been asleep haha
First time i played it was on a fantasy retro convention, and watching people play there using this method transitioned to when I bought it myself. Got 100% on all songs no hand pain involved
I want a 3d speed platformer for donkey kong with motion controls. Rolling down hills grinding on vines like tarzan , swinging vines, minecarts barrels, rockets ,riding animals Thrust yourself like gorilla tag . All with joycons with real good music capturing the essence of being donkey kong yourself blazing through a jungle with immense force and speed and a perfect balance of physical effort with rewarding you with more speed more exhiliration (however you spell that) i would want each joycon to control an arm . I never realized that what i had been looking for would actually be a spiritual successor to donkey kong jungle beats .
Jungle Beat is unironically my favorite DK game. The music, the levels, the vibrant colors, the rhythm of gameplay, the bosses, everything was so fun and well-tuned. Would love that studio to make another DK game some day.
Thank you for being a modern day Video Game historian. Opening my eyes to so much I never knew and paying homage to the great developers and studios that brought us and continue to bring us so much joy!
This game was truly the first in the genre of “strand type, open zone bongo clapping” that would shape the game industry as we know it today. Thank you GreenDay.
In all honesty, I havent played a donkey kong game in about 20 years. Watching this series has opened my eyes to how deep this franchise actually is. All thanks to Dunkey’s talent for story telling.
Donkey Kong jungle beat was probably the first game I beat multiple time as a kid in elementary school. Trying to getting those platinum rankings, gave me my love for trophy hunting today
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat was my absolute favorite game to play as a kid and I bought it new with bongos because I didn’t even know until last year Donkey Konga was a game. What a masterpiece. Seeing the boss in the background truly was an “oh shit” moment.
Jungle beat will always hold a special place in my heart. It came out when I was six and I've been playing it ever since. Its such a fun and unique game that is a lot of fun to play and speedrun. The bosses; while repeated, never get old for me. This game will always be a 10 out of 10 for me baybeeeee
I played Jungle Beat so much that I wore out three of the four bongo drum controllers my parents bought me & my siblings to play Donkey Konga. Love both of 'em to bits.
This game ‘Donkey Kong Jungle Beat’ reminds me a little bit of the videogame Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. I can definitely tell the developers of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat took some inspiration from the videogame Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, you should review that game
Both Super Mario Galaxy games and Donkey Kong Jungle Beat are so much alike. They even used the same exact sound effects from 4 Zelda games, including The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, Link's Crossbow Training and Skyward Sword!!
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is literally the most amazing Donkey Kong game to this day. Musics are absolute masterpieces. Gameplay is top notch, lots of replayability, very hard to master and easy to learn. Graphics are gorgeous, it aged like fine wine. And for the last bit... It's the closest feelings you'll have from being a JoJo character punching people down.
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is one of my favorites, so I'm glad you're showing it some love! Can't even tell you how many times I replayed that banshee level with the floating fireballs just to listen to the music. My parents HATED the game though because I played those bongos like that guy that spanks cats.
One of the few who owned and loved this game at release. Combo and high score chasing was brilliantly designed. The movement fit the design perfectly. Never really put together how much galaxy borrowed. Man those swimmiable floating water/jelly islands in JB were so cool.
I have never met anyone in person that’s played this game and have always felt isolated in my appreciation of it. Thank you for bringing this game to light
I played this so much as a kid, I can still feel the sting from the bongos. Jungle Beat is my favorite Donkey Kong game and one of the most fun games I've ever played on Gamecube
I scrolled indefinitely down the comments to see if anyone had addressed it, but the fact you actually made a rhythm out of the Super Mario Galaxy/Jungle Heat comparison is something else. BARS! You're a genius, dude! Cheers from Brazil
One of the coolest gaming memories I have is getting gold medals in all the levels, playing one again on a whim and racking up an insane multiplier, then getting a platinum medal. Realising that there was that much potential for score multiplication that there was an entire tier of medals I hadn't even seen despite beating the game showed me what a refined and polished experience it was.
Thank you for giving Jungle Beat due credit. The music and Kong bosses where so hype it feels unreal it never got a similar entry afterwards. A real shame.
Holy shit, dunkey unlocked my memory of that game, I played the shit out of it with the bongo drums and thought it was a great game (donkey king jungle beat), can’t believe I forgot about it, my god, brilliant work good sir, my nostalgia receptors are pleased
Jungle Beat gave me such a unique feeling playing it as a kid, such an insanely different game from anything out there. I still remember that and the Donkey Konga's very fondly. My mom hated me for clapping all fucking day though.
I remember playing jungle beat till 4 am and I was literally drenched in sweat. I woke my mom up to ask if I could use my parents’ shower and she was quite confused. Such a fun game
I remember loving Jungle Beat immensely. The boss fights were so cool and the high octane energy throughout the missions was dope too. There was even a secret boss after the final Kong you beat that took me like 30 tries to get to. It was hard but overall a fond memory for me.
this game was SO UNDER RATED and im SO GLAD you did a video on it!!! i remember playing it as a kid and NEVER getting bored! the boss fights were the absolute best part
I was really really hoping dunk would talk about this game, very nostalgic to me and genuinely extremely underrated, it's a mastapiece in my book and it's awesome seeing it have some spotlight
Thanks to this video, you opened a can of nostalgia. I remember griding the game with my older brother on these amazing ass drums. It took us forever but we did finish it.
this game went hard a decade and a half before 'goes hard' was even a term. the bosses, minigames, and even the 'basic' gameplay made you feel like Chuck Norris with how much you destroyed and bent this world to Donkey Kong's whims
