Sabaoth is the third boss in Doom 3. He is encountered in the level 23 Central Processing: Primary Server Bank in the CPU chamber. Killing him will reward the player with a BFG 9000.
The design of the "Doomhunter" is a callback to Doom 3's Sabaoth
Sabaoth is actually Sergeant Kelly after his demonic transformation. His lower half has been replaced with a tank-like vehicle, while his upper half is a twisted body attached to heavy machinery armed with a very sharp claw and a shoulder-mounted BFG. Sabaoth is rather large, being slightly taller than a Hell Knight and significantly wider. His claw does 40 points of damage per strike, and his stolen BFG-9000, taken from Jack Campbell, deals a massive 200 points.
The reason for Kelly's "incident" still remains uncertain. While some affirm he was working with Betruger and the demons since the beginning (substantiated by the fact that he insisted in contacting the Earth armada to bring them to Mars, maybe knowing it would be taken over by the demons, and by his phrase, "Your duty has ALWAYS been to die, soldier!"), others think he was captured, mind-enslaved, and transformed by Dr. Betruger to serve him, and that his zealous attempts at contacting the fleet to get reinforcements were simply basic military logic (realizing that the battle is lost without reinforcements). It is also worth noting that Jonathan Ishii - who is unlikely to have been allied with Betruger - was attempting to send a distress signal before the invasion, giving some weight to the latter interpretation.

Tactical analysis
SPOILER WARNING: Plot details follow.
Sabaoth follows a fixed movement pattern, driving around the room in a figure 8 pattern around the 4 pillars in the corners of the room. As the battle progresses, the pillars will open and close one by one, emitting electrical arcs that can damage the player should he/she stand too close to them. Additionally, bridges will extend from the central platform to various side rooms where additional health, armor, and ammo can be found.
Sabaoth is a large target with tons of hit points and enough firepower to topple even the hardiest marine. The suggested route involves running and gunning, avoiding both Sabaoth's claw and BFG shots. Unleash the Soul Cube if it is charged and then pummel him with rapid fire weapons such as the chaingun and plasma gun. The rocket launcher can be effective, provided the player can aim and fire the weapon without exposing himself to the Sabaoth too much.
Getting close to Sabaoth is unwise, considering his claw attack. However, he cannot run the player over with his tank treads. For ranged combat, Sabaoth fires a BFG shot at the player every several seconds or so. A single direct hit from the BFG is almost always fatal even at full health and armor, even on Recruit difficulty; however, the BFG projectiles are very slow moving and easy to dodge. Unfortunately, the BFG projectiles constantly emit secondary energy beams which deal continuous damage to the player for as long as they are in the BFG projectile's line-of-sight. It is arguably best to use small weaponry like the Chaingun or the Machine Gun to destroy the BFG shots, since the player takes more damage the longer each BFG projectile is active; furthermore, disrupting the projectile soon enough should also catch Sabaoth in the ensuing explosion.
The best strategy to take down Sabaoth is to launch the Soul Cube once you start the fight. There are plenty of enemies earlier in the level that you can use to power the Cube, but leave it charged and unused for some time before you meet Sarge. Hide behind the four pillars in the corners of Sarge's square to shield yourself from his BFG shots, so long as they aren't arcing. You can then take him down quickly by using powerful weapons like the Rocket Launcher, Chaingun, or Plasma Gun to finish him off after that. The chainsaw is also effective if you duck under his tank section of his body while strafing right.
Spoilers end here.

Trivia
Sabaoth is the only boss in the game that doesn't have an introductory cutscene.
The word "Sabaoth" is Hebrew for "armies." Ironically, the term is almost always a suffix for Yahweh, forming "Yahweh Sabaoth", or "Lord of Hosts (or Armies)".

Challenge: try defeating Sarge without the SoulCube. Don't worry, it's not that hard.

Betruger was influenced through his dreams by the demons. Sarge didn't document any dreams where he was seeing visions from hell and hearing voices. It would make sense if he went through the portal before but that isn't mentioned it's just speculation.

@@jillvalentinefan77 Sadam, look at the plausible scenario! You saw how the commando zombies we're born, in a scene! The same thing happened to Sarge! He didn't have to go into a portal like Betruger! Betruger and his high ranking demons had enough power to change him and did at some point in the game! It's been many years since i played the game, but If I remmenber correctly somewhere in Delta where You get to see a visual with him, he was not himself anymore! Just look at the movie scenes between the levels and You will see!

@@fru77y I believe there are clues to tip off the player. Sarge's orders for instance for everyone to pull back to Marine HQ instead of establishing secure safe zones for the civilian scientists and other workers. Especially his orders for those unable to return to HQ to return to their last known location and try to set up there. I even feel like he slipped up slightly at one point when one soldier asked for orders and he told him to return to his post and then quietly added "we'll find you". Like, whose we? Nearly everyone is dead at this point and his orders to everyone were to return to HQ so no one is going on search and rescue missions. And finally, he set up a command post in Delta? By himself? Delta was hit the hardest by the invasion since that's where the main portal is. Also, why would he be in Delta and not at Marine HQ in Mars City? He's not a scientist so his being there is sus to me.

@@CritStanley If he was on Betruger's side all along, why not sent out the transmission himself before the invasion began, so by the time reinforcements arrive, the invasion would've already started. Hell, if he was on betruger's side, wouldn't he be able to send the transmission himself even if the invasion already began? I would assume being on betruger's side would have the demons not attack or get in Kelly's way if he's assisting them. Also, if the player sends the transmission, (what Kelly wants you to do) why wouldn't sargent kelly drop the charade then? He praises the marine for doing his job but if he was on betruger's side, what would be the point in continuing to act like he was on the player's side if his goal of sending out the transmission is completed so that hell can invade earth. There would be literally no point in Kelly to not just say "Ha, I fooled you marine!" if he was truly on betruger side. Also, Betruger would also seem like the guy to taunt to the player that the guy who he was following orders from (Kelly) was on his side all along in attempt to demoralize the marine. Betruger does seem like the kind of person to do such a thing.
@CritStanley

@@Dr.PaiPai That is a fair counter point. Could just be writer's oversight. I feel like there are too many possible clues pointing Sarge to be working with Betruger.

You can kill this boss in like 8 seconds. I've done it. Here is proof of it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EzLaU6haq7A.html You walk in with the soulcube ready, unleash it when the fight starts and then blast the boss continuously with rockets. Dude will die in less than 10 seconds.
