Fun fact: according to the codex, the sentinels translated the slayer’s rip and tear to “ kar en tuk” which is what’s being changed in the music. So the music isn’t singing the gladiator’s song, it’s singing the slayer’s song
I honestly still believe it's the gladiator's theme, since the people spectating fear and hate the slayer so chances are they're less chanting *for* us and more trying to hype the gladiator up so he can beat us.
The shield is hosted by a Gladiator's soul, which means that when it screams "rip and tear" it's the Gladiator's soul actually chanting for the Slayer whom just set it free
@@pauloperegrinau.8521 In fact, the lore says that there was a point in which the doomslayer actually cared about the night centinells and considered them as his brothers in arms, only to see how most of them were brutally murdered by the demons
This was my favorite boss fight in Eternal. It may not have been the hardest, but I love hearing the crowd cheering you on. I was playing on Nightmare and having the crowd scream rip and tear and I was glory killing him was glorious.
I played it on nightmare too and it felt pretty damn hard to me. I think I died upwards of 50 times to this son of a bitch before I finally made it past him. What always got me was the hell knights and the gargoyles distracting me for just one or two seconds, only for him to get me with that flail-thrust which I swear is just about impossible to dodge, there's so little warning.
@@faultyblue9934 Hell knight had a different skin tone that was Tan and baron was Pink skin tone above goat legs. Hell knight didn't exist until doom 2.
One of the subtle details of what makes both new games so amazing (not that they wouldn't have been without this). Is that DoomSlayer openly interrupts what other games would turn into a mini fetch quest, puzzle or expository dialogue. I used to think smashing the Argent filters as Hayden begs you not to was the funniest/most satisfying tongue in cheek kind of move a player-character could do. And Hugo tripled down and gave us the Hell Priests getting their fucking heads removed mid-sentence lol.
When I first played this fight, my eyes widened when I realized that this guy was (aside from his equipment) a one-to-one recreation of the original Hell Knight (and thus Baron of Hell) design. The recreated Cyberdemon (Tyrant) and Mancubus designs *really* got me thirsty for more OG-accurate modern enemy designs, and while the current Hell Knight and Baron are okay, the classic goat-faced bastards are just so much better.
I actually prefer the fact that the newer games differentiate the two through design rather than color. Especially since the Doom 3 Hell-Knight design is pretty badass, probably the best monster design from that game.
@@eggboy9126 I can live with the Hell Knight using the design from Doom 3. It's a fun little nod to a game that isn't really canon anymore, and it does help differentiate (since they were formerly palette swaps of the Barons). I just want the classic goat-faced barons back. I've never really been on board with the modern baron's pug faces, they just do not look as good as the classics.
I think he is a hell knight stronger than the baron of hell PS:if you didnt know hell knights are species in hell and according to the doom 4 codex the baron is the strongest
@@DogsRNice Make sence, since the shield is full of trapped Sentinel souls that the Gladiator killed, cheering the Slayer on to kill the fucking bastard.
We have never heard doom guy’s voice until now... it’s as Angry and a Brutal as we thought... I knew doomguy had a voice! Looks like the doom slayer IS doomguy... But *evolved...*
I had 5 one ups all gone because of this dude lol, beat him on ultra-violence. IDK what I was supposed to do the entire time. Seems like anything I did I got hit no matter what. What an obnoxious fight.
My man really just said "Help us. Free *TUNA* " and The Slayer just stood there and took it without even getting his tuna. I would've shot him right there I stg-
I finally beat him on nightmare difficulty, died about 9 times. The strategy I used was to stun him with the ballista then use Rpg and super shotty. The way I also dodged his attacks were to dash then double jump
I just beat him today on Nightmare as well. However, I made the genius decision to think my Doom (2016) skills would translate well to this game and actually started my first and current playthrough on nightmare. So its been very challenging.
4:22 - I've always loved this moment where the Gladiator's body language basically says "You're tougher than I thought you'd be... let's take it up a notch" *pulls out second club*
@Lord Megatron oh. Cause I remember, watching some videos, when you play as Doomguy and flick off enemies while saying "F**K YOURSELF!" And I'm dead serious about that.
I think many people misinterpreted him talking as this being his normal mentality and being a huge cheese factor. I get the feeling though its more he had been stuck in hell fighting demons for so long that he eventually went insane with blood lust, ruining his mind. I think either his time with the sentinels, or his transformation through that sentinel selection machine (i can't remember its name) that made him stronger, also healed his mind. Which is why we don't see the screaming weird madman of these flashbacks
Right?? Whoever was playing was just god-awful, moving around like he’s playing Minecraft or something. This guy literally would not have made it halfway through the first level on nightmare. He’d have either had to lower the difficulty or just give up.
I heard about a theory that the gladiator is an original Hell knight from the original games. Basically this is one who has lived long enough to have grown in full capacity
There didn't have to be a second phase to this boss fight. Doomguy could have just as easily cut the gladiator's head off, but he chose to stab the shield instead, meaning that Doomguy beat this thing into submission, looked at it for a few seconds, and decided "I'm not done playing with you yet."
kovidh bhattacharjee Except... there have been 2 Doom movies & both were travesties (Also, what’s with the obsession for Movie adaptations of everything? Just play/Read/Watch the source material)
When the sentinel guards came in to usher the slayer out they should have made it so that they were shaking in fear being that they had to kick out the most powerful being in that universe knowing that he can easily kill them all
Maybe the devs thought the shield would cost ammo or maybe they thought the speed at which he attacks would catch you off guard, but this was an easy fight . Easier than Doom Hunter(s) who at least got a 2nd Hunter in the 2nd round and some of the adds managed to spawn in without me noticing for additional damage . Would have thought in a small arena he would push the offensive early and often but he content to stay on the opposite side the whole first round . I was kind of disappointed
Gotta love how when I fought the guy I was just operating on luck since his eyes didn’t go green after the first few times and I had to check if that happened here
Not sure if I skipped this after a second play through , but I only fought him the first run through the game , not when I replayed it , is this a glitch of some kind ?
Good lord,my brain was dead as hell when I fought this guy. Whenever the Gladiator was about to attacl,I'd just sit there and let him hit me and then fight back with RPG And on the 2nd phase,I just run around while shooting at it
@@Scp--wh4ny actually, the shield is basically a place where the souls of the dead sentinals got placed when fighting the Gladiator and died. So basically, the shield (The souls of the dead sentinals) screamed cheering on to the slayer who is the only one who could defeat the Gladiator (sorry if it's too long lol)
Wait a sec, thought of one thing : Since the song means "rip and tear" and is basically the slayer's song... Then that means that it's not the slayer fighting a boss but it's him the boss. And it's the gladiator who's fighting a boss.
