All powerups found in classic Doom and how they work. Music: Give In (With Pleasure) by Mark Klem Tempter by Mark Klem The Last Dance by Stuart Rynn Patreon: / decino
I think the biggest misconception people have about powerups is the berserk. Mainly when they assume the berserk runs out when the red tint disappears. Good video. :)
I used to think: “partial invisibility is only half invisible, so if I were to pick up two I would be fully invisible!” And so I went to the last level of doom, entered one try command for invisibility twice, had only a pistol and immediately got wiped out
“Here’s what you can collect” Backpack: Eastpaks Supercharge: Blueberries RSS: Radical Overalls Computer Area Map: iPads Light Amplification: Virtual Boy Partial Invis.: Powerdowns Berserk!: Protein Powder Invulnerability: Jeebus Mode Megasphere: Mancubus Balls Awesome names for all the thingies
I think the most interesting part to me was how invulnerability and godmode are considered totally different but it only matters in that one specific case (minus the screen effect) and that they technically just block 1,000 damage rather than totally blocking all damage. That plus the telefrags dealing 10,000 damage were really interesting. First I've heard of any of that. "How much damage does a telefrag do" is never something I've ever thought about in any game, it's always just been taken for granted that it instakills you outright but at least in Doom if you could somehow get more than 10,000HP then you would survive a telefrag since it is just a damage source like any other.
The Zandronum source port, and possibly GZDoom as well, have a "god2" cheat that makes the player invulnerable to telefrags. Most likely by raising the player's damage immunity beyond 10,000.
@@Bomblastic49 Nice, I didn't know about the "god2" cheat! You get the message "Ultimate degreelessness mode on"! There's always something new to learn!
If you remember doom 1 episode 4(thy flesh consumed) map 2 had a cuberdemon trapped behind a low wall. The trick was to rush down to the start of the level, 5o teleporter and telefreg the cyberdemo instead of wasting ammo. I didn't even know either until recently about telefreg in the original DooMs engine.
holy shit, yeah i never bothered using berserk packs in the game because I was like "eh, who cares if I can punch hard for 20 seconds". I never realized the effect sticks around.
@ShoeUnited Oops! Oh, well. If you think I'm going to fix it after all this time, then you got the wrong idea. Gotta, man up and roll with the punches.
I've been playing Doom since I was a small child back in '94 and I NEVER knew that the extra fist damage from Berserk lasted beyond the red screen. My mind is blown.
Yup. IIRC it does theoretically run out if you stay in the level long enough, but it’s over a year or something ridiculous like that so for all practical purposes it never times out
They made every effort to make it seem that way. The red screen even flashes as if to warn you that it's about to run out. They probably intended for it to run out and either made a mistake in the code or changed their minds and never fixed the red screen.
I watched a streamer play Doom recently and she was _convinced_ that berserk only lasted until the red screen faded, and that until then she couldn't switch weapons. I swear I rolled my eyes every time she - very reluctantly - picked up a berserk pack.
It makes sense. The goggles are only useful if you're putzing about with lighting and lots of darkness, and the Casalis were not about that.

One big difference between Computer Area Map (IDBEHOLDA) and the IDDT IDDT cheat is the fact that the area map item allows you to see where you have been in the level and what places have not been visited yet, making finding secrets much easier. IDDT hides this info.
Its usefulness really depends on the map design being built with it in mind, and it's rather difficult to design a level around being too dark to see shit unless you can find a specific power up without pissing the player off. Not to mention that gamma correction exists even in vanilla DOOM as a workaround to see in dark maps, and GZDoom and maybe even other source ports offer a lot of options for adjusting lighting. Oh, and the goggles break any attempt at atmosphere while they're in effect, which is not very helpful to the map designer. It's easier on the map designer to just keep the brightness just high enough that the light goggles are kinda redundant without sacrificing atmosphere or design the map in a way that you always have a bright area in sight to go to, and players have methods of debatable cheesiness to be able to see in dark areas with or without the goggles. So yeah, I would say the goggles are the least useful power up everything considered. I know I'm months late, but I wanted to say it.
After playing some challenging levels in Doom for a while, I would say that the main powerups used in slaughter levels tend to be the backpack at the start of the level, megasphere and the invulnerability (especially on lower difficulties).
Thanks, decino for this comprehensive video. For a long time, I used to think it was a bug when strong poison leaked through a radiation-shielding suit.
@@thereallystoopidguy1449 I actually own a fully working virtual boy, never got eyestrain from playing it. Only thing is some colors can look odd back in real life if you've played VB for more than an hour straight
The world of DOOT. Surviving the the evil realm of heck. The DOOT man must collect the colorful balls in order to defeat the ultimate enemy. The spoopy skeleton.
Chainsaw takes fucking forever against some of the tankier enemies and Beserk Does a higher DPH (Damage Per Hit) Than the Chainsaw, Plus Beserk Fist doesn't latch on like the Chainsaw, so you have actual control over the fist.
@@electrorage4158 I know, I was just being cheeky. Berserk is definitely more versatile, but the chainsaw is great in tight cooridors against Pinkys or Cacodemons, and wins on the coolness factor every time.
I played through Doom 1 & 2 for the first time last week and had so much fun! I just found this channel and am also having a lot of fun seeing all this background info for these games. Thanks!
Watching your videos and Karl Jobst's speed run videos on Doom got me really pumped up for my first playthrough of Doom 2016. I feel that I enjoyed it much more because of this
In source ports that support the use of console commands you can give yourself an enhanced form of invulnerability that can protect you from telefrags and other attacks that would normally pierce it
It also makes you entirely immune to knockback. Same applies to the "super buddha" cheat - the regular buddha mode's vulnerabilities are canceled. Although I think you still receive knockback.
100% item runs when?? Btw thank you for being so interactive with your community! Comments and hearts make many of our days better. I know it's very time consuming but it really shows you care.
Thanks for the video decino. Brought me to the idea of an ultimate backpack where you can collect all these power ups,one of every kind, and then use them when nessesary. Would make some situations for the player (the dork I am ) much easier. 😁
What I love the most is your commitment to making these explanatory videos. It's impressive. I've been playing DOOM since it's release, and watching your videos reminds me how complex this game really is when you're not flying through it blasting away monsters. One thing, though... You said way back in your DOOM II UV Fast playthrough you would cover the Line of Sight bug. I'm still waiting for that one the most. Thanks again, Decino! You're my favorite RU-vidr. Keep it up!
0:45 so I just tried idkfa and it doubled my ammo capacity. I guess it`s an added feature in GZDoom Edit: Ok, I didn`t noticed text, that mentions info about modern source ports
Dude I love your yellow picture videos!! I binged them so hard and it's why I subscribed. This one was no exception. It's nice to see some items I never used or some I would grab and wonder what the point was beyond health.
Fun trivia fact: Decino refers to these as goodies. He also seem to enjoy the berserk ration pack as he sometimes refers to it as: aaaah, delicious health!
It's amazing how this dude can make me interested in a game that's almost a decade older than me. And what's even crazier is how I can enjoy said game even in the year 2020.
A white box with medicine - Medikit... a black box with roided out medicine - METHKIT! Leaky pajamas, it a feature not a bug... Doomguy looks left and right confused in disbelief
Doom's artifact selection is one of the simplest and most balanced of the whole gaming world. It's really hard to find much fault in it. In certain ports, the Virtual Boy does trigger a night vision style lighting overhaul. I tried it, and it works nicely, way better than just making the world ugly fullbright.
BigMacDavis will need to do a supplementary video about health and armour bonuses. Also how delicious they are. Did you see this week he was playing the master levels and at the end before finishing realised he was missing an item. He spent several minutes retracing his steps before he found the solitary health bonus hidden in the dark. Then and only then could he exit
The one thing that make me laugh out loud so hard (and everyone else here probably), the first time, is hearing 'Jesus Mode' and 'Mancubus Balls' with earphone. XD
I don't like how some ports "fix" the invulnerability effect by making it affect the sky because that makes it harder to see things. If i recall, the GBA port replaced it with a blue filter. D64 made it different and i prefer the way how it handle it, since there's still colors and it's not so far away from the Doom 1 version. I liked how Doom 16 gave power ups timers to indicate the time left and the colors around the screen without affecting the center.
