In this video, I show you how to replace the door lock actuator on a Pontiac Vibe, Toyota Matrix, and many other vehicles that share this same, common lock actuator mechanism. Parts can be easily obtained on Amazon for $35, or on E-Bay as low as $20 including shipping. This part I replaced cost $20.14 with shipping and worked excellent. Replacing it isn't hard, but it is a bit finicky. At times, you almost need 3 hands to hold a couple of things in place, but overall, if you take your time you can get this done fairly quickly and easily. I only needed a Philips screwdriver, a flathead screwdriver to pop off a couple of covers, and a 10mm wrench or socket. I did this on my daughter's little car without her knowing it, so it will be a nice little surprise for her.

Tell them good luck. Just take your time and don't overthink things. It's really pretty easy to swap out if you are just careful to pay attention to how things are connected.

Mine is the same except the door is stuck in the lock position. I cannot open the door

Without ripping off the door panel, there just is on easy way to get in there either. You may be able to remove the fasteners on the top part of the door card, but not sure you can get to the bottom. If you can, you can remove the door panel from the inside. You can probably at least pry up on the part of the door panel that clips over the window ledge and pry it back a bit to get in. You may have to remove that driver side seat to get additional access. The seats are easy to remove. Once the door panel is off, you may be able to get in to the door actuator and manually work it to open the door. Not sure. It probably isn't going to be easy no matter what.

Have you tried a rear door? I can't find a way to get the actuator past the window channel even when loose on a 2007 Matrix passenger rear door.

I haven't tried a back door. The ones in my daughter's car still work properly so I haven't had a need to do anything there.

My 07 matrix driver door broke like that too. Very helpful. Thx. Is your seat leather? Looks like leather its very rare.

Nope those are cloth seats. It's a pretty basic car but it gets around great

Would super cold weather cause these to fail?

I don't think so. There is nothing in the mechanism that is temperature dependent that I'm aware of, and there isn't a great deal of stress on the components. The plastics inside can break or wear with repeated use though, and I don't think the motors or solenoids are particularly big so I imagine with heavy current draw they could burn up pretty easy too. Now if we're talking arctic -20 and below temps, that could cause the plastics to get brittle enough to break when used I suppose. At those temps, nothing wants to work right it seems.

Where did you find the actuator? I need one but I'm finding ones that cost 500 plus

I got mine on E-Bay. I searched "2004 toyota matrix passenger door lock actuator" and found several that were $30 and down. The one I got was right at $20. The seller store on E-bay is www.ebay.com/usr/newtownsquare.
