You are back! This build will be great! Yeah, Gary, you only have a few builds, but man! Look at what you have built! Don't short-change yourself, you are an artist. Yes, most of it is patience and perseverance, but there are few builders that can achieve what you have already done in your short time in this hobby. And you will only get better.
Going to watch your build with great interest, as just bought one of these (along with several other ‘support’ vehicles as I intend to make a diorama). You have a very relaxed, calm presentation, and give great advice and tips along the way. Totally agree that there isn’t just one way to build kits - as long as we all enjoy what we do & the way we do it, that’s all that matters! I fancy putting my finished effort on a shelf in the living room, but need to approach the other half on that subject at some point! Thanks for sharing your build, regards Paul.
As you said. You aren't a pro, but what you are is more than capable of delivering an exceptionally well-finished model. Thanks for tackling the big projects the way you do. With your easy going and thorough approach. I have enjoyed all that I have seen you do.
Been waiting a year for this,Gary. Good to see you back . Can't wait. And I agree 100% with you about building the model my way.I don't care what others think.I build for me.Scratch on.Peace out.
I watched your video of this Dora railgun and decided to build one but I have gone big I thought if I'm going to build one go mad so got the 1/35 scale model boy is that big I haven't started it yet but it nearly 4 ft long that baby is big but Gary you inspired me thank 😅🎉
Gary... I do believe you are indeed correct about Trumpeter molding and packaging the HobbyBoss kits. About 3 weeks ago I received my Trumpeter 1/200 USS Iowa, and it was packaged in exactly the same fashion. Even the colors of the inner boxes was the same, as was the inner and outer box art. On my Trumpeter model, it does say on the outside of the main box how many parts there are. In the case of the Iowa, it says 1520 parts. So check your box and see if it doesn't tell you. Good luck with the build, and looking forward to part 2. :)
Gary, what got me started watching your videos was specifically for wooden ship building techniques. My modeling tastes are all over the place as far as topic and scale, but the wooden kit I have was a gift from some very dear colleagues, and I want to finish it well. Like yourself, I too have started model building after almost 40 years away from the hobby. I also have the 1/72 Dora in my stash, so I will be following your build of this monster of a kit with great interest. As you mention in this video, I admit I am one of those model builders who, for one reason or another, have many kits on the bench or on the shelf of doom. I am trying to finish the kits I have already started, or I would buddy build my Dora along with you. Anyway, good luck with the build.
Hi Gary it is a pleasure to see you back modeling finally the DORA is coming to live. Succes with this Model. If you make the video's the same as you other ones it should becomes a great adventure. Regards Piet.
Watching your build with great interest. I've been interested in this kit for some time now. Just curios, do you know the channel for the swedish modeler that built this? Trying to soak in as much as I can about this subject before I start my own.
Glad to see you starting up the build Gary. I wash my parts, but for a big model I do the washing a few sprues at a time. With the model I'm working on, the parts barely hold on to the sprue, so If I tried to wash all at once, I would end up going crazy. That model you have is probably much better, at least I hope so. Have fun my friend, and enjoy! Regards, Solomon
The only thing I don't like about this kit is having to build 4 ladders rung by rung. Why Hobby Boss couldn't mold them as one piece is beyond me.Other than that, the model is coming along nicely. I will buy some aftermarket ladders from Shapeways.
Hi Gary! Awesome builds I have gone through all the videos.. it turned out amazing. Thank you for the valuable advice to take note of. I bought one of these a month ago and I just try and watch as much videos to gather information/tips and tricks. You are referring to a Swedish girl that also built the Dora in this video, do you perhaps remember the name of her channel? I am also following Model Nerd on his current build. Thanks again for creating this content!
Sorry for the delay in answering your question. No I do not remember the name of the Swedish girl, I searched for her on you-tube but could not find her. Thanks for watching.
Ahoy Gary Great to hear and see ya again your looking great and happy that Dora gun is one Hugeeeeeeeee and colossal kit to say the least judging the kit and its condense of parts you will be a busy man all summer long up to fall or perhaps winter time they sure are producing huge kits lately . your videos are the best a lot of great free information has been gathered here on your videos a complete building guide for every project Happy you have your new home in order now its your space a dream come true and you are a happy man buddy I be watching your progress on this behemothFrankie day
I have built quite a few Trumpeter/Hobby-boss kits including Morser Big Karl Gerat, BR 52 Locomotive just to name a couple and never washed parts and never had trouble with paint not sticking to guarantee the paint sticking properly I used I think Modelmaster paint prep just spray it on and wipe off with a paper towel.
Wave, HobbyBoss, and Merit are all Trumpeter, they only change the names on the boxes depending on where the models are going to be shipped to, and Merit is no-longer. The other very large company in Japan is Bandai. Try using a soft large horse hair shoe polish brush for cleaning the entire parts tree in a matter of seconds.
Hobby Boss is it's own separate Chinese company. They contract out to Trumpter to pruduce there parts in Trumpters China factory. Speaking of Japan don't forget Tamiya.
It's going to be awhile before I get to another ship, I'm working on the Dora right now and it's going to be sometime befors it's done. I will be doing some major painting on the Dora in a week or two. Or, you could go back and look at some of the ships I built, I'm sure there might be some painting in them, but that was before I got an airbrush.
Dear Sir, I heard that painting is done while building.... is there anywhere some documentation about the painting steps (i dont want to have to glue paint to paint parts....)
No documentation.... just make is easy on yourself. Watch how I painted this model and what I did when gluing two painted parts together. This model would almost be imposable to paint all the ins and outs at the end.
@@garybrinker178 gluing painted parts together..... could you possibly tell me at what time you explained that, because I collect all videos about the dora, and studying all, but the dora comes in 2 weeks... then i can listen to it all
@@Mediapix It's hard to say. I ether scraped off paint or tapped off parts a bunch of times so I could glue unpainted parts together. I'm not saying my way is the right way but if you follow my build you should have no problems.
I just found your channel and I am getting back into scale modeling after a 30 year lay off. I really enjoy the fact that your showing a lot of the steps including the basic ones. I noticed you pronouce "wash" as "warsh". I'm from the Eastern Shore of Maryland and that's exactly how we pronouce "wash". I'm just curious where your from?
YA.....But what makes this model so nice is virtually no flash very little seam line cleanup and parts fit together so well it goes together fast. Making videos of my build took me twice the time to finish.
look on the bottom right of page 11 and you will see AA is part C25 and E15...make two and the same is true for BB on page 15..... they glue to parts H48 and H50....see those two parts on the right side of the page and an arrow above them pointing to where they go once glued together. good thing I kept my directions.
I just looked at Amazon, they have it for around $160. Or try E-Bay there was some on there. Also try your local hobby shop, they should be able to order one for you. Personally I would get one from Amazon. Make sure you get the one made by Hobby Boss.
Talking about unusual models, are you aware of anyone who does earthmoving equipment? Tanks, planes, ships, cars, but no scrapers, graders, bulldozers?
A lot of people smarter then me have looked for prof of a second gun but could not find one. What they did find were a lot of parts for the Dora that people mistook for a second gun. If you have confirmed prof please share with all the experts and put this to rest. I talked a bunch about all this through out my build.
Sorry but I just couldn't watch your video past the 25 min mark. You just talk and talk and go on about nonsense that has nothing to do with the model or go on and on about something that is obvious once you open the instruction and take a look at them. BTW, I have that kit and I also have the 1/35 version of it by SOAR Art Workshop.
