I've run in to the same problems building the model Benjamn W. Lathan it is not a s classy as the Bluenose, but the drawings are a laugh. Being an Engineer and wood worker I think I can stumble thru, How ever this my first wood model and I could have found your posts sooner, your a much more accomplished builder than I. I have also built a 32 foot real sail boat. This alone should help...
I am very interested in this ship, however, you take to long to actually build. Sorry!!! However, for your information, the aails would not be pure white and would be weathered sails
Thanks very much for sharing this! I'm building this kit now for a D-Day Tribute group build. I also purchased the book 'The Boat That Won The War' and now realize that this kit is a mishmash of very early, mid-production and very late details! But your tips have been very valuable!!
I miss Gary's build videos. He had a casual, relaxed yet informative presentation style that I just don't see with other channels. Hope you're doing well Gary!
Funny you should ask. Just had open heart surgery Feb. 21st. Doing fine, about all I can do is set in my chair and play on the computer till the end of March. Would not wish this on my worst enemy. Some day hope to get back to another model.
Oh my! You're now on my prayer list. Glad to hear you're on the mend at least. I know I speak for all of us who enjoy your channel when I say we look forward to seeing you back at the workbench when you are able. Take care my friend.
@@garybrinker178 All the best Gary, I enjoyed watching all your videos .Can't believe its been 9 years since you posted this ! Speedy recovery and get better soon
I watched your video of this Dora railgun and decided to build one but I have gone big I thought if I'm going to build one go mad so got the 1/35 scale model boy is that big I haven't started it yet but it nearly 4 ft long that baby is big but Gary you inspired me thank 😅🎉
Your 8 years ahead of my kit. I have a Lindberg 1978 kit with a pretty jack up and jogged hull. Once the hull is off I’m going to have issues with the fit margins. The parts had a tiny bit of flash however the parts came out ok for the better part. My hull is pretty banged out for sure.
Thank you. My uncle was on the Snook, a gato class sub, which is someplace still out there on the bottom of the sea. The Snook patrolled from the tropics to the Arctic in the Pacific before she went down. The submarine war against Japanese merchant ships ( my father-in-law was a Japanese merchant marine, his ship hit of mine, and went down after the war ended. He was saved by an American warship. My understanding is he got home during his own funeral changing tears to laughter. In my fantasy It was my fathers destroyer, but alas I have no idea.) did a lot in bringing the war to an end. If only out torpedoes head been better in the beginning. Yes I am watching it from Japan. And we didn't start it. Of course we meaning Americans. My son who has Great uncles on both sides ( US & Japan ) in submarines that went down.
Hello I have a model schooner and its sails are nicotine stained. Any chance you might have advice. I was thinking of cleaning them without removing them from the boat.
Funny thing--no two Gato or Balao class submarines looked the same after refit. Go figure. Model the thing as best you can. I mean really, Fletcher class DDs are just as bad, if even worse.
Very nice build. I just bought this kit yesterday. Now I know what to do. Again great build 👏👏👏👏👏👏 I see you haven’t posted anything in years , I hope your well.
Only 2 ships in this Naval Classification . Arizona and Pennsylvania both at Pearl Harbor . Pennsylvania was in Floating Dry Dock up on the Hard with 2 Destroyers Cassin and Downes . The rest of the ships proposed to be built were canceled for more modern designs . If memory serves me correct FDD was tied up at the East end of present day Destroyer Row where the big overhead cranes and the main Welding shop was. Having worked on Pearl Harbor Hickam AFB evidence of Dec 7th is still present in the shell hits on the concrete walls of the Buildings ...Ever Vigilant beware the Eastern Dragon like the Land Of the Rising Sun ,The Empire of the Golden Dragoness stares East with malevolent eyes.
Man, you are meticulous. Being new into models, you are probably the best guy for a newbie to watch on RU-vid because you go into detail and explain thoroughly. I learned so many things from you building the Arizona I would never have known. Thanks big Gary.
I enjoy your vids Gary. You remind me of my uncle. Some may say youre unnecessarily repetative but I prefer your vids over most others and you know what youre doing. I get very easily bothered by long winded channels but for some reason you really dont affect my horrible ADD. Look forward to more vids and thanks.
Hello Mr Brinker . When necessary other priorities are to be dealt asap. Hope everything will back to a normal life in your household in a nearest future. Cheers 😊
I'm working on the same kit (mine is a 1976 reissue) I looked it up on Scalemates, it was first issued the year I was born, 1957. The molds are showing their age.
Anybody wondering about the arrows from the jibs in the plan, showing the lines going "nowhere." It is a mirror of the visible lines. Port and starboard are the same. It is so when the boat tacks, the jib is trimmed on the other side. (I'm sure Gary figured it out as he went along. It was clear to me, having been a sailor.) Just FYI so you don't think the plans are faulty....they just assume you realize it is the same on the other side.
Im 52 and just started and cant believe how you pros mod these models. The first one I did was a 1:800 Kittyhawk and without doing any of the prep and then watching you guys, yeah, it looks like crap comparatively. I just got the Az and will be watching all of these. Thx, Gary.
