Doralice - Bossa Nova Guitar Lesson #20: Advanced Phrase 1232

Transcription is based mainly on the Getz/Gilberto recording with some minor additions. The intro rhythmic phrases (1432 and 4442) were played by João Gilberto on his first studio recording of Doralice on album O Amor, o Sorriso e a Flor. The end is based on a phrase played by João Gilberto in most live recordings from later dates. Finally the lyrics are synchronized with the rhythm based on Anjos do Inferno recording from 1945.
The lesson shows the usage of advanced bossa nova phrase 1232. All beats are played with staccato except the beat 3 from 2nd measure. This phrase may be regarded as a variation of second basic bossa nova phrase (1332), otherwise played through most of this recording, with just one beat dropped, that is beat 7 from the first measure.
João Gilberto initially played this song in E, this can be heard in Chico Pereira home recordings from 1958. The first studio recording from 1960 was also played in E, but slowed down to Eb. When recording Getz/Gilberto João switched to D and kept it in that key for the rest of his performing career.
Enjoy playing Doralice!

I came across your page almost a year ago now and was brand new to this style of guitar. My family always listened to “the girl from Ipanema” when I was little so I wanted to learn that one first, luckily you had a tutorial for that. My father taught me how to play when I was young with the basic chords and I thought I learned a decent amount of bar chords on my own but these were all new to me. However, keeping the tempo with the picking hand was the biggest challenge for me to get used to. Since then I got myself a classical guitar and learned almost all of the Getz/Gilberto album including countless new chords I hadn’t even heard of before finding your page and it’s all thanks to you! I can’t explain how happy it makes me and my family to be able to play songs that carry a personal significance with their sound. Your talent is matched with generosity and along with everyone else here I am as grateful as can be. Obrigado Senhor!

Thank You for yet another excellent bossa breakdown. I learned this tune by ear years ago from the Getz/Gilberto LP, and my chord grips are somewhat different. It's interesting to see alternate approaches. Joao was the master of switching up voicings throughout the song which really makes transcription a challenge. I would like to suggest Eu Vim da Bahia for a future lesson. I have really struggled with that one. Your instructional format is great!
@bossanovaguitar
@bossanovaguitar 6 лет назад
You're absolutely right, Joao seems to have played the same chord progression in a lot of different ways. For this one I checked several studio and live recordings and combined those that seemed most interesting. As for your suggestion, I'm still working on early samba-cancao - bossa nova period, but more recent authors like Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Jorge Ben, Edu Lobo, etc will also be covered. I'll keep your recommendation in mind. Thanks for your input.

The hard part of performing this song is singing it while playing it (for someone with only Rosetta Stone Portuguese under his belt ) , because of the melody's intricate ( and very attractive ) rhythmic structure. It's one of my favorites.

Thank you for providing such great lessons! I appreciate the rhythm written out. I have 2 questions for you (or anyone else familiar with bossa nova). The first one is if you wouldnt mind explaining what the rhythmic phrase means (1432, etc)? I did percussion in highschool a long time ago and I had never come across this kind of nomenclature. My second question is, is the bass note (thumb) generally going to stay on the down beats? I am just starting to get into brazilian music. I have been listening to the Getz/Gilberto album a lot recently! Again, thank you for sharing these lessons!
@bossanovaguitar
@bossanovaguitar 4 года назад
When I analyzed bossa nova songs I realized that just 4 different 4-beat patterns represent more than 90% of the rhythm in use and by assigning the numbers to them I found it easier to memorize the rhythm in those songs. Everything is explained on my website bossanovaguitar.com. To your second question, yes, at least in Gilberto's playing style, the bass mainly stays on downbeats. That doesn't mean that you can't play bass on other beats as well, but that would be rather an exception than the rule and typically would be mainly used in intros, bridges and endings. I'm glad you like the lessons. Thank you very much for your post.

I use carbon trebles, I think I used Hannabach on this one, currently I use Savarez. For basses I usually pick up any decent brand that I can find. Cheers!

@bossanovaguitar
@bossanovaguitar 4 года назад
Sorry to hear that. If the A bass on 5th fret is the only problem you can play empty A (5th) string instead. If that still don't work you may try to replace Dmaj7-D6/A sequence with Dmaj7/F#(2x022x)-D6/F#(2x020x), Hope that helps and thanks for your input.
@shandya
@shandya 4 года назад
bossanovaguitar no, thank you for your input 😄. I’ll try using your suggestion for now, maybe in the future when my fingers are flexible enough, I can reach the Dmaj7-D6/A sequence. I really like the alternating chords I find it beautiful
