- Delivers a stimulating, refreshing aroma
- Contributes to a soothing massage
- Promotes healthy-looking skin
- Produces a warming sensation on the skin - perfect for recovering muscles, or stiff limbs
- Penetrates even deeper than wintergreen
Other companies think they already have “birch oil”, but when tested, they were not pure. It’s really easy to synthesize something in a lab.
Dr. Orahbodh Satyal, Head of Essential Oil Science relates (he published his research last year):
"Wintergreen and birch are 99% similar, so most labs will miss the testing because they are only looking for methyl salicylate, which is the same in wintergreen. Last year we did a market survey for birch oil. They claimed to be 100% pure and natural birch oil. We found pure wintergreen and we found wintergreen mixed with synthetic methyl salicylate. None of them were pure. None of them even had one drop of birch oil."
Most “birch” oils are 100% wintergreen. Others are synthesized from petrochemicals or expired aspirin (synthetic methyl salicylate), which is undetectable to GC/MS testing.
Detecting synthetic methyl salicylate is hard to do because this molecule has no chirality. Chirality is like a “fingerprint” that determines what plant that molecule came from. Because it doesn’t have chirality, methyl salicylate can’t be detected just by using GC/MS testing.
So in addition to GC/MS, we use carbon-14 analysis to verify the source of methyl salicylate. Before now, no one was making sure that what was in the bottle actually matched what was on the label. There was no standard for purity with Birch essential oil. Synthetic methyl salicylate can cause GREAT HARM, whereas PURE methyl salicylate can be extremely beneficial. Especially in combination with all the other constituents naturally found in Birch.
We ensure our oils are SAFE.
Wintergreen vs Birch:
- Similar chemistry, but there is power in the way that they differ
- Wintergreen is common in sports rubs
- Wintergreen is much cheaper
- The minor constituents that differ in these 2 oils make a huge difference
- Birch is higher in aldehydes and phenols (constituents with strong biological activity…reacts with the body VERY differently than wintergreen)
There is not a single Birch distillery ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD…UNTIL NOW. We are the first and only one.
Synthetic birch oil is extremely easy and inexpensive to create in a lab.
True birch essential oil is extremely difficult to distill from the tree.
