Very wizzy-esqe patience from johnny, outclutching the clutchgod shows how much he's leveled up recently. s2j could really take this whole thing if he plays this well tomorrow.
Great to see S2J get his first offline win vs Hbox. I've seen him study Wizzy vs Hbox videos and S2J def incorporated some Wizzy stuff into his own playstyle to take the dub here. Very cool to watch, love to see the grind pay off.
take note that the very last interaction was hbox jumping to the right to land a roll read with a rest, but instead of rolling, s2j does a knee and catches hbox with full right DI into his death
That’s a great example. S2J this set adjusted on the fly so well and his pressure was perfect. I specifically liked how when Hbox would shield on the side platforms, S2J was pressuring his shield from center stage, but at one point realized that Juan was positioning his shield towards him to prevent a shield poke, but Johnny faked him out and landed a knee from the other side EDIT: 18:11
TreytheTrashman is a really hype commentator! It takes a lot to be following high level melee while it's happening and be ready to pop off with the competitors. Especially when you're next to a veteren like Toph who's usually the more subdued and cerebral voice, it's nice to get some visceral disbelief mixed in.
I can't believe that no one is talking about that missed rest at 10:16. S2J saw HungryBox's SDI up on the first two hits of the gentlemen and REACTED to shield the rest. Absolutely bonkers. Watching it back its almost too quick to catch
I wish we had these 2 commentating the top 8 block, I love the two that were, but they were just making inside jokes and laughing the entire time. These guys actually provide good commentary and say whats happening in game.
If I had a nickel for every time Hungrybox was upset by a Captain Falcon player at a supermajor tournament in a set that went to game 5 on Battlefield concluded by an abrupt finishing move in 2022, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot but it's strange that it happened twice.
Felt like for a long time S2J actively avoided some of the Falcon Puff strats that made Wizzy so good at the matchup. Probably thought it was a "lame" playstyle like a lot of the Fox strat that top Foxes use and Mango doesn't. This felt like a turning point where S2J really developed and embraced new ideas. Wizzy and n0ne kind of left him behind in the past couple years but it'd be great if S2J had a level up now.
I haven't watched melee for a couple years, and now I come back and Johnny is way better than when I left. Watching him play, it's apparent that he's put in the work. I'm loving this new timeline.
That was so much fun to watch, as a fan of captain falcon and Hbox. something about the match up is so enjoyable on multiple levels for me. And yes I laughed at the first stock stomp as much as Hbox did.
Love the mention by the commentators about Falcon's Up B to catch people shielding on platforms. The move isn't as strong as in Ultimate but there is definitely some (albeit situational) untapped potential in it.
You don't see partially charged smashes on puff because smash attacks don't combo into anything vs puff. Only exception is like doc up smash that I can think of (or peach smash -> turnip shenanigans, or ICs shenanigans I guess which you do see).
Did Trey compare Hbox to aMSa and say that everyone likes him? Hbox is one of the most divisive players in the community, there are plenty of people who hate him
Friendly reminder that Hbox is EXPLICITLY WEAK to Meteor Smashes bcus he uses tap jump and inputting up on the controller when you're getting Meteor Smash'd causes you to get locked out of the meteor cancel window Also GOOD SHIT JOHNNY
Yea yea everyone wants to bully Hbox for losing as usual but at least he is showing up to tournaments unlike some players who drop out and only go once a month. Hbox has always been one who goes to as many tournaments as possible which is something that should be praised more often. Going to more tournaments means that you have more chances to win but also more chances to lose which happened here. Remember that Hbox JUST WON GOML less than a week ago and proved that he is still capable of winning tournaments which is something that mango hasn't done. Mr. Mango who just had his first top 8 appearance this year decided to drop out even though he said he really wants to shut the doubters up and win. Kind of a weird choice to play mario kart and get drunk two days before a major event but oh well I guess. Big ups to HGOD for being a proper competitor and going to as many tournaments as possible even if it leads to poor performances sometimes.
Uhh… wizzrobe has beaten him a few times, notably twice to win SnS 5. n0ne has taken him down a couple times also. Still both positive for Hbox but this isn’t exactly a foreign concept for him to lose to falcon. It IS foreign for him to lose to Johnny, though. Can’t even remember the last time that happened, if at all.
Melee players take extra blue pill injections so they gotta dumb it up twice as hard as everyone else. Same reason there's fuckin pronouns by the players' names.
