The double pole strong hexamid is a way to pitch a large rectangular tarp as a fully enclosed shelter. The DD XL tarp that I use for this is 15*10 feet or 4.5 by 3 meter. This makes a very large shelter. The long shape makes it especially good for two persons that like a big awning or just have a big lot of gear, two large dogs or toddlers in a "kid kot". This video shows it put up with two trekking poles. The optional awning asks for a third pole. This could be a stick. Setting it up with the permanent open side requires the same two poles, but the bonus side-pitch needs two extra sticks.
Alternatively, as you can see in my video with 24 pitches, this can be set up really well with the hang loops suspended from the outside.
In this video:
-what a great shelter
-how to put it up
-entry and exit
-what to put under it to make it a complete tarp shelter setup
-optional awning
-alternative pitch with one side open
-alternative pitch with side opening.
Please note that I make a small commission if you buy through the links.
The music is Early Avril by Unicorn heads.

Thank you! I'm in love with this configuration. I set it up a few times in the garden to get the hang of it, then wild camped on the North Yorkshire moors in heavy rain and moderate wind - my girlfriend and I were cosy in our tarp palace all night. This is going to be my 'go to' from now on!

Hey journeyman! The cool bonus at the end sure is nifty yes, but fair warning: not very straightforward to do. Complete soberness is advised. :-)

This may be your best all-purpose pitch! As you say, it's a better Modified A-Frame. One or both ends open when not expecting heavy weather. Could this be done with a 3x4 tarp (instead of 3x5)?

This would work great with a ridgeline and prusik knots on the top attachment points, that would also eliminate the need to carry a pole

Hey Ruth, weirdest thing. When I started the channel (five years ago, I guess) I thought that after about 30 videos on tarp pitches that all possibilities would be exhausted. That turns out to be veeeeery much not true!

Use every tie out…because powerful weather can come while you’re asleep. Better to have the tarp secured before you lay down.

@papahiker9014 3 года назад
Hi P RO! No, seriously, it does not even budge if you set it up nice and tight and stake the four flaps down. My guess: 7 beaufort not a problem.

Hi! How do you prevent your trekking poles slipping and falling? How do they stay upright under your tarp?
@Tentcl
@Tentcl 3 года назад
Awesome roomy set up. But requires quite a big tarp. You seem to have quite a lot of different tarps, so I wonder how do you manage your tie out lines? Do you have a set of lines and stakes for each tarp or you carry a "universal" kit of tie outs on carabiners? Love your videos. Thanks!
@papahiker9014
@papahiker9014 3 года назад
Hey Anon, great question! I store all my tarps "naked" and have a lot of loose tie outs and guylines. Example this morning I packed for a week long trip to the mountains next week (stoked!!) took my 3*3m tarp, selected 6 stakes that fit the circumstances, two guylines and 10 tie outs (two with carabiners and cord locks, 8 with just loops).

The two-pole hexamid looks like It has a lot of unsupported canvas compared to the one-pole version. In Scottish winds that might matter.
@papahiker9014
@papahiker9014 3 года назад
Hey Johnny! I tried it in some serious wind and it stood like a house. Have to say: don't make do with a half baked setup, it must be setup well in order to perform well. Kind regards, Papa hiker
