I've never read Jasnah as being dismissive of Shallan's stance on her actions. She hears that the point is well reasoned and well put together and respects that even as she disagrees. Honestly a pretty healthy reaction compared to most alternatives.
@t3hsilarn
@t3hsilarn 22 дня назад
What Jasnah did was absolutely a form of entrapment, which is illegal under modern law. At the same time she was acting in self defense once they were attacked. She was absolutely justified to defend herself in that situation but also in the wrong in intentionally creating the situation. It can, in fact, be both.
@orcmcc
@orcmcc 21 день назад
It's not a form of entrapment though, even under modern law. She walked down an empty street. They chose to enter the street. That, under modern law, is not entrapment and she would be legally in the right. Especially in there own world where she does have the right to lethal self defence.

The plot moves, but this part is about mental issues and depression. How hard it is to overcome it, and how it is a process. Not just one moment of clarity.

I dont understand why nerdy is willing to just buy that the people in the alley are thieves because they said they were but aren't believing they are murderers when the evidence is the exact same. Would you find it more acceptable if she had waited above the alley to watch them kill someone before jumping in because you would have seen them kill someone on screen instead of just being told they did by the person who is giving all the information? Interesting lines to draw

As soon as someone makes the decision that their life was equivalent to the gamble at acquiring my possessions, I would consider that a fair trade, and attempt to make them lose on that gamble. I did not initiate the gamble, but I will do my best to make sure I do not lose that gamble. Those thieves would be facing the same punishment for robbing Jasnah (a powerful foreign dignitary, present with the King's blessing) as they would for murdering and robbing her, and there is a greater chance of them escaping judgement if they do not leave witnesses. Yes those thieves would have killed Jasnah (if given the chance, if they had even a small glimmer of who she was).
@jansy6002
@jansy6002 23 дня назад
It’s why I love “the lesson” chapter. There is no right answer. Did she get rid of problematic possible murders? Probably. Did she bate lower class people on hard times to attack her? Definitely. Your allowed to feel how you want, but to me there was no clear cut what was right/wrong action.
@Hawkido
@Hawkido 22 дня назад
@@jansy6002 Philosophy... Morals and Ethics. You are not supposed to enforce YOUR morals upon another, however, Ethics are designed to be enforced upon others. What Jasnah did was immoral (by the view of many), but what the thieves did was unethical (by everyone's standards). Thus Jasnah only need her own judgement, but the thieves must face society's judgement, and they did, very suddenly and most definitely. Morals are subjective and internally applied laws and guidelines. Your conscious will be the judge. Ethics are objective and externally applied guidelines. Society will be the judge.

@@jansy6002 Just because you are poor does not give you the right to rob and murder someone immensely wealthy, even if they are flaunting their wealth in your face! It is quite sickening how people bend and twist around to justify protecting murderers and thieves, just because they have made shitty decisions in their lives. Jasnah is an authority, not only by her station as a lighteyes and a princess of the most powerful country in the world. But also in ways not yet revealed in the story. So she DOES have the right to be judge, jury and executioner of these thieves and murderers.

I guess I've been the top comment on a few videos; some of which were pretty critical. But the tone of book club has been easier to digest over the last two even if you don't love everything. The arguments felt like they were getting tense in ways that left me actually angry for a few weeks, but it seems like you've put some emphasis into the tone that is helping me. I've been thinking about the demographic split between people who really like to participate in chat and those that consume things mostly in blocks and then say something at the end, and if there's a difference in appreciation for this kinda format for people that are more used to streaming. Probably. Brains are weird. No one is going to fault you for getting bummed out in the middle of this book. See you next week.

55:00 Nerdy seems unable to separate legal proof beyond a reasonable doubt vs. a reasonable belief. Are they proven murderers? No. If I had to stake my life on whether or not they'd murdered before given the circumstances, I'd bet yes. Jasnah does not have the right to act as executioner of suspected dangerous criminals. She absolutely believes them to be murderers and is probably right.

Yeah it's like, the town guard for a city like this is going to be very fallible, they were gambling with yalb and stuff. It's very possible they're being bribed off, and she could have stopped once they ran, but that's 4 rapists off the street from what I'm hearing and to a certain extent we don't have the knowledge Jasnah does. I don't think she would insinuate they were rapist if she didn't have proof to believe that's the case.
@Merecir
@Merecir 21 день назад
She does have the right. -She is a lighteyes and a princess of the most powerful country in the world. That gives her authority and responsibility. -The city has abandoned its duty to protect its citizens. -She steps in and acts as the executioner of the existing law, because through her authority she takes the right to do so.
@joshrisher2560
@joshrisher2560 22 дня назад
As someone born and raised to rule in some capacity Jasnah understands the weight of responsibility and risking doing the wrong thing. She makes a decision based on all of the facts she has available. What isn't stated but can be reasonably taken into account is that criminals are territorial. Lots of people, had already been robbed and murdered in that alley and the criminals who did it would not allow others (especially lesser criminals) to encroach on their territory. Those men got unalived because they chose to attack Jasnah, and with one of them being left behind as a reminder, it's not going to happen again in that alley anytime soon.

I can definitely see where Nerdy is coming from, even tho I had the opposite experience. After Wheel of Time, Mistborn was the first series I read from Brandon Sanderson and ngl, I was disappointed. That series felt like it was just PLOT. We were jumping from one thing to the next, we never got to sit and be with our characters and just exist in the world. So I was so relieved when I read Way of Kings where it so much more felt like this was a real place with real people. The characters (maybe even especially Shallan) are so much more realized and complex than anything in Mistborn. I do love that series too, so this is not me hating on it, but lets be honest, basically all the characters in there are some form of fantasy stereotype.

Fantasy ideas are based on reality though. Why are almost every single protagonist in fantasy a human? A world without slavery is amazing, but unrealistic. This is adult fantasy not teen fantasy. Just because the topic makes you uncomfortable doesn’t mean it’s not worth talking about.

The fact we can go a website and talk about books and movies while so many people in this world suffer and don’t have the privilege we have is reason enough to include these topics.

We can learn from those past mistakes by just reading actual history. It doesn’t need to be in every fantasy world. It’s exhausting.

Why is it exhausting? This is adult drama. Not adult rom-com. Depression/slavery/class system is all real. If fantasy was riding on dragons and fighting with lightsabers I would enjoy it at 14, but I’m an adult and want deep meaning in my literature and you don’t get much deeper then the bondage of humans, but hey let’s just ignore it, because it’s tough to read and makes me sad.

This book really doesn't have a sense of plot for the first 3/4th of this book. I don't see why people argue this. I and many other had no idea where this book was going until "that" moment and it all clicks. There was a plot, and it all makes sense. But there was no way for a reader to discern it all at that point. That doesn't mean its a bad book. I was completely enthralled the entire time and couldn't get enough. I think it is my favorite book of the series. But yes, you do not have any indication of the plot until that big moment. But Clarus is right. This book is basically setting up the worldbuilding and main characters for the 5/10 book series. I think a lot of the criticisms of Shallan's early chapters not being interesting are due to the fact that she is mainly used in her teachings, along with the interludes, to do a majority of the worldbuilding. But you will get your "high" moment soon. From then on I think its full action and you know where the plot is going the entire time. After reading the series, or even just the next book, you really look back and appreciate all the things Way of Kings did. It had so much to do and it executed it near flawlessly. It's truly a fantastic series. And it's just as much philosophical as it is an epic fantasy.

For a change, i mostly agree with your criticism (well, except the whole slavery thing you really let overshadow everything else). It is depressing, and it's not a fun read.
