Looking for an affordable way to take your (retro) game to the next level? Before jumping at an expensive upscaler, check out this epic showdown of what truly exceptional line-doublers can provide you.
In this comparison, we match the RetroTINK 2X against the DVDO iScan Pro to see which line-doubler takes top prize as a Framemeister or OSSC alternative. Both are great devices, but only one gives you the most holla for your dolla... Okay, agreed. I'll never use that line again.
For breakdowns of the benefits these line-doublers have over upscalers, check out the great work of these fine creators:

This is a really well done breakdown. I can appreciate the effort involved in grabbing all of these captures, lining them up, and then doing an analysis. No wonder this took you a while to compile. Thanks for the nod, but more importantly the actual breakdown and content.

All the problems in this video related to judder/shimmer/ripple/deinterlacing/etc.. are caused by the HDMI->VGA adapter he uses to capture the 2x footage, the HDMI output of the 2x is butter smooth without the mentioned problems. The 2x does not deinterlace, it uses BOB technique which may not show correctly on this VGA adapter or 30fps video. Overall great video, but it should be in 60fps to show the true potential of the 2x, AND all the 'negatives' in this video are not caused by the 2x itself, but the capturing chain.
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 5 лет назад
Thanks for the feedback :) I can confirm that there's less judder on the 2X when plugged straight into my display. The VGA adapter is a necessary evil for my capturing setup, though. My display actually fields every console I've thrown at it impressively on it's own. The Atlona, RetroTINK, and VGA adapter are all in the loop to make all of my consoles cooperate with my AVR and capture card.

Edit: disregard my question. I just realized you answered this in your video. These have been a great help to me so thank you very much. Oh cool I have a retrotink 2x. So do you use an hdmi to vga dongle to plug into your atlona upscaler?

So I decided to pre-ordered the Retrotink. Mainly because I found a way to bridge its 480P weakness gap. I have all my retro consoles plugged to my analog Denon receiver, via composite, Svideo, and component. My receiver can output everything via component. So I’ll be splitting it’s component output, one going straight to the TV, and the other to the Retrotink. For 480P content I’ll be using my TVs component input, and for 240P and 480i content I’ll be using the Retrotink. Mainly because my TV doesn’t do a good deinterlacing job. I’ll also be splitting the Retrotink HDMI output, one going straight to the TV, and the other to my scanline generator. I think the Retrotink’s smoothing option, combined with scanlines will give it a CRTV authentic look.

I'm curious about that iScan Pro … the HDTV I still use has component inputs that I want to fill. Even if I want to use HDMI, I already placed my pre-orders for the Rad2x's for the consoles I still have as secondary cables
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 4 года назад
I would definitely check for compatibility first, as it's not guaranteed with the iScan Pro. I've had several displays that don't care for its output, and several that work just fine.

Retro Tech Select a little bit of the update: Just found out my Samsung LCD HDTV _accepts_ 240p via component (i.e. HD Retrovision) which I didn’t think it would because it failed the test that uses a composite cable into the Y port. I do notice the comb artifacts for a few of the flashing sprites, but even playing a certain music rhythm game on the PS1, I don’t suffer input lag compared to when I owned a CRT. I would still need to split and convert this signal to HDMI for a capture card

@@RetroTechSelect Hey man, is the iscan pro a real line doubler? i keep reading that it is, but i havent found any definitive answers. Im looking to see if it doubles from 240i to 480(would be 480p since it deinterlaces)

It's frustrating that the Retrotink 2x still is not available. Months pass, what's going on.
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 5 лет назад
The copies you see floating around are from an initial small batch of 50 units. More should be available quite soon, from my understanding. With custom made products like this, parts have to make the long, slow boat ride from overseas.
@RetroAllianceGaming
@RetroAllianceGaming 5 лет назад
So question, what game systems are you using this on? Anything with component or composite? Does it actually upscale games even tho the outout is basic YRE cables?
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 5 лет назад
Almost all of the systems I'm using are via component, with the exception of the N64 - which would need to be modded if you don't want to use S-video. Composite through the 2X looks as good as it can, but it can only do so much. My Life in Gaming created an exhaustive review that touches on the NES and Genesis via composite: m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mdUlcIR1yh4.html Highly recommended.

Another question. I have the same iscan pro model as you. I use it for genesis/snes/n64 with retrovision cables. Any words of advise as far as settings or cable use like is usig a vga to vga better than using a vga to hdmi cable? Thanks
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 5 лет назад
In my experience, if your display has a VGA input, I'd try running the iScan straight into that. If not, combining the iScan with a scaler produces a pretty attractive image... even if you do introduce a touch of lag with each device you add to the chain.
@cbk12
@cbk12 5 лет назад
@UCcuDCFXW_ohqzfjcDhrbbUQ thank you for advising that. Because first I tried a vga to hdmi solution and it created this horrible wavy lines across the screen. What causes that problem by the way? Then I used a vga to rgb into a scaler from the iscan amd presto lines are gone. Ya maybe a bit more lag but it looks great on my screen. Thanks for the idea. I thought it was the iscan pro but it wasnt

Hello RTC Interesting video I bought the iscan pro for one reason but I back ground story First I have FM in my set up for years now but I’m so happy about the unit and really do great jobs handling 240p to 1080p upscaling for videos recording I play my games on BVMs and have grate time to see clear pictures About iscan I talk to video games industry and I have concoctions across the globe for us and eu JP and some time I asked questions about the scale and lines doublers will some devs asnwer this “why do you play on scalers we use them for screen graphing and video share with media and promo companies “ And man when I saw some examples I agree with smoothing the jagged edge inside the games I don’t know what equipment they use but they told me they use component videos signal and VGA 15khz ( no mentions is that scart or bnc cable ) I wish I can share something with you But did you know there is jumpers inside the iscan pro you can shift between them go see the manual unit you will end understand if you see it there hopefully this will fix the issue snes Sorry my English not my native Thanks :)

Being able to adjust the saturation and sharpness on S-video and Composite sources is a definite plus for the iScan.
@cbk12
@cbk12 5 лет назад
Crazy question. But could you put both together? And hook into the tv?
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 5 лет назад
Technically.... you could chain them together if you set the the 2X to passthrough mode and then converted the Mini HDMI output to Composite, Component, or S-video. You could then run that 240p/480i signal into the iScan to be line doubled.You'd still need to convert the VGA output from the iScan back to HDMI if your TV lacks a VGA input. Since iScan wouldn't accept the image if you had already line-doubled it to 480p, you couldn't achieve anything interesting like re-doubling to 960p. In practice, you would just be adding lag while likely degrading the picture quality. As neither device will accept a resolution higher than 480i, nor put out a resolution higher than 480p, one device would essentially serve no purpose if they were chained together. Not to mention the fact that you would likely need two additional converters to make the whole process work. That is the crazy sort of thing My Life in Gaming would try out on one of their livestreams, though :)

Wait so plugging the retrotink to your elgato wont work without the vga scaler?
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 5 лет назад
In theory, 480p would be fine so long as the horizontal resolution is 720p. The 240p passthrough mode is definitely not supported: help.elgato.com/customer/portal/articles/1020307-what-resolutions-can-elgato-game-capture-hd-record-?b_id=360 For review purposes, I need to capture all three modes. For convenience, I need my Denon AVR to recognize the signal (it also has issues with HDMI below 720x480p.

I just don't want there to be pixles :/ I play all of my retro games on a crt but from my Dreamcast and up, I us a smart TV. Consoles such as ps2 doesnt look great but $100 just for something to look a little better seems to much :/ is there any other option?
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 4 года назад
If you're just looking to avoid pixelation or jaggies, you could try to track down an enhanced definition LCD. I got a 480p "EDTV" from Goodwill for $10. All of the 6th generation consoles look great on it. For modern TVs, a lot of the options cheaper than the 2X look terrible. With the right set, HD Retrovision cables can be quite stunning out of the box, though.

The only problem, the 2x doesn’t support 480p signals
@RetroTechSelect
@RetroTechSelect 5 лет назад
Yeah, 480p passthrough would be perfect. As it is, I have one component switcher for gen 6 consoles, and another for older 240p systems.
@chchris25
@chchris25 5 лет назад
Retro Tech Select Retro Tech Select Yeah, the 2X is mostly meant for 240p consoles. In my setup I use a receiver with all my retro systems plugged into it. They are all plugged via Component and Svideo and output via Component. The receiver does all the switching and conversions and it will be nice to use its Component output to the 2X. However since it doesn’t passthrough 480p signals the 2X falls short. I therefore just plug my receivers Component output straight to my TV.

Why would the iScan have even been needed in 2001? High definition TVs barely existed and most people still used old standard definition CRTs that retro games could have easily looked and played great on.
@RetroTechSelect

It definitely would have been a niche product back then. Seems to have been aimed at home theater enthusiasts with enhanced definition setups.

i actually just read a company memo and the reason is apparently that they wanted to showcase the special chip inside which was 9 bits compared to the 8 bit chips that were going around at the time. It was a huge success for them and the chip was in high demand after!

The current version of the RetroTink is incomplete. The designer forgot some resistors and it makes games with "flashes" unplayable. Don't buy now, wait for a newer version. www.videogameperfection.com/forums/topic/problem-with-retrotink-2x-and-genesis-ps1-s-video/

I would definitely recommend the 2X to anyone on the fence about it. For those that had problems with the original firmware, the update has reportedly resolved them. I've personally had no issues with my 1st batch model at all. One other thing people fail to mention is that the 2X has improved compatibility over the OSSC for tricky consoles like the SNES. Running my SNES through the 2X AND the OSSC makes it play nice with the rest of my setup - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WazQ5-2kN_A.html
