GUEST: Doug “Cosmo” Clifford on @adikalive
On this Part 3 episode we will talk about the Creedence Song" SUZIE Q, Tom Fogerty .
Tom's band, Spider Webb and the Insects (which featured Jeremy Levine of the Seeds), signed a recording contract with Del-Fi Records but broke up in 1959 before releasing any records. The Blue Velvets-a group led by John-began backing Tom. Eventually Tom joined the band, and the group recorded three singles (with Tom on lead vocals) for Orchestra Records in 1961 and 1962. By the mid 1960s, the group had been renamed The Golliwogs and were recording with Fantasy Records, with Tom and John sharing lead vocal duties. In 1968, the band was again renamed-this time to Creedence Clearwater Revival-and John had become full-time lead singer and primary songwriter.

Doug and Stu comprised one of the most rock solid bottom ends of that era. John's voice and guitar got the attention, but those two guys really pulled the sound together.

From 1969 through 1971, Creedence Clearwater Revival was the top selling act in professional music, THE Number One rock band on the planet. It's sad that Doug, Stu, Tom, and John couldn't see eye to eye on some things. There's no bigger fan of the legend that is John Fogerty than l, and what Tom, Stu, and Doug did as three/fourths of the band, but I wish that they could toughed it out for at least a few more singles and albums. Their albums, with the exception of the last one, "Mardi Gras, the one without Tom.... were absolutely fantastic. And it goes without saying that their fifth album, from 1970, the legendary "Cosmo's Factory", is STILL, in 2024....the greatest studio-recorded album in rocknroll history.🎸

Agreed, everyone hails John as this al time great who was CCR, but he really never did a damned thing as a single artists. What people do nit get is sometimes the heartbeat oof the sound is a "collective collaboration" that can't ever be captured in the bottle again via any of the individuals, now three guys with John being one might replace one of the other guys, maybe, but they did not just rely on John, yes he may have wrote most of the songs, but how many ideas did the others add in via the music that made it the CCR signature sound. I always thought Lionel Richie was much better with the Commodores tbh. He did have a good career as a single artists, but t he group had a better sound.

I have that dvd too but I think it lacks an intangible that a very similar live album, recorded a few years earlier. does not. It's hard to describe what it is but certainly John's connection with the audience has a lot to do with what I think is missing in the 2007 live recording. See if you agree--to me, John's "The Long Road Home", recorded in 2005, is one of the best live rock and roll albums of all time. Both recordings share almost all the same songs.

RiP Tom.🙏

If only saul zantz had minded his own business, in effect, he killed his own goose that laid the golden egg. The formula ccr had was perfect, why the hell did he encourage tom to leave, and for john to let stu and doug write songs??? Unbelievable!
@frogger1952
@frogger1952 3 месяца назад
Tom needed no encouragement from Saul to leave. Eventually John's heavy handed ways wore thin on Tom who had voluntarily relinquished lead singer role to John. Tom had been talking about leaving since the Green River album. After he left, he begged to come back in but John told him "no way". And John purposefully didn't replace him with another rhythm guitar just to show Tom how little he thought of his contribution.

Great band! (I really enjoyed the interview...thank you!) I have to admit: I don't like Doug & Stu. I HATE how they joined Saul Zaentz in his lawsuits against John. Doug (as Saul stated in his testimony in 1988) GAVE Saul the idea to sue John for writing a song that sounds too much like CCR (Zaentz actually sued Fogerty for sounding too much like himself...thankfully, Zaentz lost). When Fogerty found out that these guys were involved in that, it broke his heart. They resented him for years for writing all the songs and being in complete control...but if he hadn't done that, they would NOT have been the super-successful band they were. He REFUSED to play with them at the R&RHOF...and I don't blame him. He refused ANY reunion. They cried and played victim. Thankfully, John has continued his career and recorded a ton more amazing songs solo...and toured with a killer band for decades now. DOUG & STU are the entire reason there never was a CCR again. If they'd stayed loyal to him, he would have played with them again. STILL, sorry I sound so bitter. I really enjoyed the interview. Great channel!🙂
@t4texastom587
@t4texastom587 2 месяца назад
eaaivazian I totally agree with you. Tom, Stu, and Doug should have been more loyal to John. Even today, I can't understand how the three would allow themselves to change what was working, to basically put the breaks on all that money coming in for them, and put an end to being a part of the the most successful rocknroll band since the Beatles.🎸
@eaaivazian
@eaaivazian 2 месяца назад
@@t4texastom587 Great point. They let their egos get in the way of something very successful. How could they think it was a good idea to start writing songs to compete with John, one of the best songwriters of the 20th-century? THOSE THREE destroyed CCR. It was basically them blaming John for the fact that they could not write (or sing) with anywhere near the talent he has.

Doug didn’t care about the band or the music, he was only in it for the money. For John it was his heart and soul.

I think they were called C.C Revival because they revived the Sun Album by Elvis; a comparison between Bad Moon Rising and You're Right Am Left She's Gone supports this - the guitar sound and licks are very similar. Not that I'm disparaging this - it was good idea. They were the freshest and most exuberant 60's band the U.S. exported to the U.K.

you must mean kenny aronoff. Couldn't agree with you more. He plays every song as hard, fast, and loud as possible. No subtlety at all. He practically single handedly ruined the 2007 gig at Royal Albert Hall. I think John Molo is perfect for Fogerty's songs.
