Im 63 years old . When I was young I never liked Doug's version . I never thought it compared to the Beatles . I loved his version of ever lasting love & still do . One of my brother's said it was better than the Beatles . It wasn't till all that long ago I came to appreciate Doug's version . One of my other brothers had it in his 45s collection . I transfered it to USB . Now all these years later I have come to realise just what a great version it is . RIP Doug ❤😊 Sydney Australia 🦘 4/6/2024
Same age, but I inherited the single of this from my brother when he went off to join the Army. Always loved it, one of those Beatles covers that eclipse the original.
From the first guitar note...to the song...to the last guitar note.. i had this 45 as a teen and its ingrained in my soul...with Dougs voice...Forever !.. R.I.P. brother.
RIP Doug Parkinson. Stunning voice, and arguably the finest Aussie afro to go with it. He did a great version back in 1989 of the Guv'ment song from Big River which thrilled the audience and they begged for more. But his quintessential version of Dear Prudence is one of those rare occasions where the cover transcends the Beatles. My friends and I were honoured to see Doug Parkinson perform Dear Prudence live at Sydney Opera House only 18 months ago. What a champion.
So agree. I brought my son up on a steady diet of music - just told him about this version. Doug's voice takes an already brilliant song to a whole new level IMHO.
@@JaneNewAuthor How fantastic for your son to be raised on music. My kids were too ... I reckon it's a gift. There are some who passionately believe nobody can outperform the Beatles, and in most cases that's true. But as many people have commented here, there are some amazing exceptions, including Joe Cocker's version of Little Help From My Friends, Zoot's version of Eleanor Rigby, and Doug Parkinson's Dear Prudence.
I am 70 an I still have a 45 of this song. Absolutely loved his voice. What a loss. Don't cry much at all but have a tear in my eye. Gutsy bastard. John.
A voice from my teenage years has passed away. A great voice too and memorable songs too. Vale Doug Parkinson. 'Dear Prudence' is in my head again and the years have dropped away. ♥
Why does this masterpiece have only a few likes. How sad young people today don't have the exposure to the brilliant music of the 60s 70s. So many around who are ardent fans when they have heard and are familiar
If you'd grown up with the original Beetles version a few years b4 this, then coped this in the psychedelic era in Australia, this was happening shit man.😉
Word Patrick. That we were. Yes he was brilliant. Also axiom. Sorry can't remember name, been persecuted all day with techno trash. Can't even think straight. Gingerman guy
I have always thought Doug did this better than The Beatles since I first heard it when I was 15. I am now 65. Australia has lost a great talent in Doug Parkinson.
Without a doubt the greatest version of any Beatles song ever recorded. Saw Doug perform this song live only 18 months ago. He sang it with all the passion and power of the original. RIP Doug Australia's greatest voice. You will be seriously missed.😔
Absolutely, been saying that for years. They are the top 2 Beatles covers no doubt. In fact, I'm here to send my friend, this, and zoot's Eleanor rigby. Imo the third best beatles cover: Elton John Lucy in the sky. Joe cocker help from my friends good.
@@peterfraser8075Park-like had real earthy soul. I also think another bloke who had soul was Joe Cocker, sure he used to gargle with gravel and he knocked out she came in through the bathroom window better than the Beatles Patios though was something special
This was...is...and always will be the best version of this number ever recorded. This means voice and the entire band is just incredible....we did not know what we had. But by GOD we do now...!!!!
Great Aussie performance from '69. Special thanks to Billy Green's lead guitar playing for In Focus. Gave us great sounds. Who could forget Without You...well someone didn't and took it off the socials! He Wrote the score for Stone too. Now William Greenstreet, the Sax player extraordinaire in the New York USA, since the later 70s. RIP Mr. Parkinson.
VALE DOUG PARKINSON Thank you for the beautiful music you gave us over the years. Very heartbreaking for Australian Music to lose another GREAT. Condolences to your family and loved ones. Rock N Roll heaven what a hell of a band it will be 😢😢😢😢 R.I.P 😪😪😪😪😪😪😪😪
Doug was a Narrabeen Boys High School student - AKA " the academy for young gentlemen " as our teachers so sarcastically labelled us. Doug was a Collaroy resident that surpassed all our expectations. A truly great voice. 😇
The Beatles were greats but this is one of the few covers of their songs that topped the original. Others like Hush (Deep Purple), Eleanor Rigby (Zoot) and "Friends" by the late, great Joe Cocker spring to mind, but not many more. Doug could do anything. Saw him as The Big Bopper in the Buddy Holly Story stage show. The stage wasn't big enough for him. His mike went for a few seconds but you almost couldn't tell his voice is so strong. And vibrant. And soulful. And brilliant.
A magnificent song , DOUG , I SAW MANY TIMES BERTIES SEBASTIANS , with his great group in focus , saw DDOUG in HOBART a while ago , he didn’t look very well , this is a brilliant song, he is a legend , great voice
'......Lithgow N.S.W. late 1960's and this song was the buzz because the town loved 'hard rocking jazz......i am living on the South Cymru coast these days and i just got the word of Doug's passing. To all his family and friends...i'm sorry... shit iv'e got tears in my eyes'''''i had better split...'
I was so sadden to Wake up this morning to this Very Sad News of you Passing over night. You had a Truly Awesome Voice and always gave 110%. Your songs always take me back to my early Teens and I would be in my Bedroom playing many of your Songs but this was and is my Favourite. I am so sad that I never got the chance to see you perform in Public that Voice of your was 1 in a Million. God only takes the BEST and now you can sing to the Angels with that Awesome Voice of yours. May you R.I.P DP. 16/3/21
Doug Parkinson's version of this song is better than the one done by the Fab Four - which is the ultimate complement that can be given to any singer!!!!
I remember watching Doug on GTK I think it was when I was very young. He scared the hell out of me but his voice mesmerized me at the same time. Another great Aussie talent.
I feel privileged to say that I got to see and hear Doug sing this, and many of his other songs live. What a fantastic performer and an amazing voice. RIP Doug.
Masterpiece video. The guitarist is mesmerising. Stock still, playing his instrument like a snake charmer. Doug a picture of concentration. No posing here. Beautiful photography Masterful all round
Because he didn't have the pop star look, like say Darryl braithwaite. Or Darryl cotten eg. And because he was less pop, more art. More intellectual. But the smart ones appreciated him
I’ve often thought about this. I reckon apart from this great song selection to cover. Who ever picked his material let him down.. even if that was Doug. I’ve also wondered why he (nor Cocker for that matter) never put out a Beatles material album. I would have bought both that’s for sure
Rip Doug Parkinson another sad loss of older Australian music Im so grateful to have heard such an amazing voice "like no other" .....my condolences to his friends and loved ones
WHAT A VOICE! Thank you Doug for sharing your incredible talent with us all for years. Sending my love to your wife and family at this very sad and difficult time. I just hope they find some comfort in knowing that you were loved and admired by MANY.
I was about 20 when this song was popular on the radio--I had no idea that it was a Beatles' song. When I heard their version, it sounded so watery and weak, there was no comparison. Of course that's not a reflection on the Beatles' awesomeness!
Yeah what a great time it was in Melbourne 1968. The music was really pumping and we didnt care about big name overseas acts at the time. There was so many local world class acts playing around town who cared? I sure didn't.
Thankyou Doug. The stage lights somehow just wont shine as bright and the world lost a little grit and harmony with his passing. RIP Doug, and again Thank You.
I was a young kid that had just arrived from Afghanistan back in the late '70s, watching this fellow with a strange Moustache on the TV. That was Doug, bless his heart and soul. Beautifully sung....RIP...I feel so nostalgic for my childhood's Australia and Doug was a part of it.
When I was in yr11 I was lucky enough to have seen Doug Parkinson play Judas in superstar, at the St George Leagues Club. What an amazing experience. Marcia Hines played Mary, but I can't remember who played JC. Doug was amazing. RIP Doug Parkinson
I was lucky enough to have caught Doug live the last two years he was with us. I didnt really know what to expect, but i was blown away by his show. He never lost his voice or abilty to talk to and entertain a crowd. RIP Doug, the sweetest soul voice in Oz.
I was not aware at the time that this version was a Cover,I had only heard this version, when I found out it was a Beatles original it blew me away that this Version was far Superior to the Beatles, For Give Me For Such Words! Now in my 70s I still feel the same way!
