I trained under my Sifu, Lee Moy Shan (Douglas Lee), for many years. I can tell you with clear memory that his teachings always included an infusion of Sam Fat. I find peace in my heart that he found his voice to share his encyclopedic knowledge of this subject to the public. As a disciple of Lee Moy Shan I can say that along with my Brothers that we have been blessed to be under his guidance. We are all still around with him because of this!
He once told me: When wisdom and power comes from the heart, you can help destroy hatred in society and help lead thousands down the right path. This man has already changed so many people's lives. Now he will share his lifetime of knowledge with the world and continue to change people's lives for the better.
Si baak Douglas and Si baak mo Pei Lu, you're always a great source of inspiration for a Ving Tsun practitioner and others that are close. I can feel Sam Faat in your words and actions. Grandmaster Douglas Lee's teachings will serve for future generations.
Outstanding interview! Doug and Pei Lu are an inspiration to my own partner goals. Many generations will benefit from Doug's infectious wisdom. A true original thinker sharing his interpretation of a century old art form used in modern day life. Can't wait to see the full documentary!
Beautifully said, expressed and demonstrated through daily life. Thank you for sharing the your heart and the heart of Ving Tsun. I am excitedly looking forward to seeing this air on PBS. Great job!
Douglas is a wonderful and caring man. I met Doug a few years ago at a photography club and it is an honor for me to call him and his wife Pei Lu my friends. Although, I never studied under Doug I always refer to him as Doug Master.
Thank you for what you've done for your students and your students' students. Wing chun is an amazing system and is helping me "center line" the other essential things in my life and remove negativity. Hoy ma.
What a great interview! Thank you for sharing this deep philosophy which helps us elevate our own lives and the world at the same time. Looking forward to the film!
This man is unlike anyone I've met in my life. This needs to be spread to the public. He is truly a man of heart, contention and real philosophy. Please share this, his teachings need to be made aware.
Douglas Lee is a living legend with a life story to match, an ever growing body of accomplishments that most of us would consider impossible. His strength and good will are infectious, even casual conversation with the man brings out a confident benevolence in whoever's ear he has. I am very excited for the release of the documentary. The Sam Fat is the philosophical origin of our practice reborn for the 21st century.
I have the pleasure and privilege to call Doug my friend. His generosity towards everyone around him is genuine and knows no bound. I've been learning from his sum fat and whenever I got stuck he would be eager to teach and explain for me. His sum fat helps me face my own situation with confidence and plans. I can't wait to watch his work and hope to learn a lot more from him.
Overcoming difficult circumstances in life builds a man’s character and the backstory provides that insight. Great interview - Sigong simplifies a complex philosophy and makes it practical. Fortunate to be part of the family, the principles have changed my attitude and my life and my family appreciates my transformation. Look forward to the full documentary.
From way of the fist, to way of the heart, the highest level of martial arts... a way to stay in present time consciousness, and have a more intentional life! GM Douglas Lee's message of Saam Faat is way over due! Thank you, with infinite love and gratitude!
I have not trained with my dad in wing chun, but his sum fat were life lessons that truly can be applied to any situation. It has helped me tremendously and will help others who are willing to learn.
I'm biased. It's been my good fortune and great honor to be his friend and included as one of his family. His philosophy is simple but is the culmination of years of experience and hard lessons. While they may not solve the world's ills, I do believe they can help many of us find a better path in life.
Thank you for sharing, Sigung. I cannot wait to see the entire documentary...the photographs are wonderful and historic. We hope to see you again soon in Elizabeth City.
can't wait to see the film, to learn life from another angle. Douglas is a precious friend to have. It takes a big heart person to share such a great philosophy with others. its a wonderful thing you do, Douglas way to go.
This remarkable couple have been a great example of how to live your life . Congratulations on this new undertaking by Doug with the support of Pei Lu. I have always felt very privileged to count them among my friends, good luck with this new venture !
This is a great interview of Douglas Lee. It's interesting to learn how Wing Chun shaped his life and how he benefited from it, not just the physical part, but the mental part as well. I can't wait to see the full interview and hear more of his Path to the Heart philosophy.
Sifu D. Lee's Sum Faat has been long over due. Isnt it interesting that if contemplated and penetrated enough, that we find the true meaning behind Wing Chun? Its apparent that as we age, Wing Chun fighting must take a back seat in our life and be replaced with peace and creativity. I anticipate watching the series and congratulations to LAGP films for an excellent quality and fascinating documentary.
Watching this brief interview, we learn how Doug Lee's youthful focus on Kung Fu has filled his life with stamina, confidence, good humor, and generosity. I am eager to see how Mr. Lee uses the "idioms" of Wing Chun to analyze, de-escalate and transform the challenging situations all of us encounter; especially since he appears to have experienced many unusual and diverse challenges in his own life! The image quality is excellent and the director has framed each scene intimately. We feel we are right there as Mr. Lee earnestly speaks to each one of us.
Thank you Si Bok Douglas Lee for sharing so much kung fu with us and now the world via RU-vid and the Internet. Please visit us in San Francisco in 2017. We will arrange for your visit soon - Victor Chung.
My Sifu in New York, 1977-1979. Shows the benefits of kung fu practice beyond physical combat. Sifu Lee Moy Shan had such a loyal following of students over the past 40 years....so impressive!
Sam fat will be the most difficult journey for me as a Ving Tsun student. Through kung fu I one day hope to find myself, and to inspire others. Thank you Sigung for sharing your wisdom with us.
Amazing interview and a truly insightful and inspiring man! Sigong Lee's philosophy extends so beautifully outside of martial arts and into how we interact with the beautiful world around us. Thank you Sigong! Excited to see the rest of the series!
It was a nice interview of Douglas Lee. Steve Seiler must did a lot of study about Douglas before the interview. The questions he asked lead the whole interview smoothly and got a lot of information out of Douglas. It is interesting of “Wind Chun Sam Fat (Path to the Heart). As Douglas said “Wing Chun Sam Fat is another side of teaching not just fights part”. Like Steve said it was from what Douglas learned from the pass though his life. It is so different that I know about Kung fu. It is interesting and I can’t wait to see when the film is finished.
This is a beautiful interview with an amazing, compassionate and generous man. It is fascinating to learn about the directions Sifu Lee has taken in developing his vision for kung fu over many years, far beyond just the physical aspects. I'm really looking forward to watching the series on PBS.
The consummate "Peaceful Warrior" and someone who has lived the Chinese diaspora. I knew him from high school and in retrospect, I can see where his destiny has lead him.
a master is successful in his trade. a true master can apply what he learns in the trade in his everyday life and have the same success. a true grand master can influence people around him to apply the same set of principles to achieve greatness and happiness on their own. in this sense, sigong (師公) is a true grand master. this is only a preview but i am looking forward to watch the rest of the series.
