Agreed. She's also a lot more difficult to ruffle, which just makes her stronger. The Dowager is a wise old bird but she allows her emotions to affect her deportment. Cora does not. No wonder Mary's a badass.
I had a nanny who used to insult me and spank me, it was terrible, and I didn't tell my parents because I was scared of her... One time, my dad saw me crying and asked what was wrong and I told him that my nanny had hit me. She wasn't there the next day and never appeared again. Please, parents, keep an eye on your kid's nanny, because most children are afraid to tell someone when they're being abused.
Dude if i could id have a nanny i mean i need kids first lol but some people need them bc of their jobs. It doesnt mean ey dont take care of their kids cause id love my kids but following ur dreams sometimes means you need help if u have kids
Ryan Watt I agree, sometimes a little help is good, but it's better to have someone you trust, like your mom or sister. If you still need a person you don't know, then be aware and keep an eye on her, also watch the kid's behavior. As I said, kids are afraid of telling when they're being abused.
It depends on the person's needs, too, tbh. My mother had a "helper" to watch my sister and I while she went to study her Masters degree. She was pregnant, and both of us were under three years old. My father worked long hours and my grandparents were still working too. She didn't want to inconvenience them, yet, wanted to continue her education and raise her kids. She spent as much time and energy as possible raising us, but needed an extra hand to cope. I agree about keeping an eye out for the nanny. Sometimes children can be afraid/or don't know what's happening.
I use to say this is Cora`s Molly Weasley moment. All the series long she is yes, important and caring and you know how she loves her family but in this moment you can see her figthing like a Lioness for her Kids
There's an underplayed enormity in this scene: not only is Cora's own granddaughter being abused by the nanny, but this particular granddaughter is *Sybil's* child. Small wonder Cora wasted no time in getting rid of Nanny West.
I always imagine that Thomas would have become to Sybby what Mr Carson was to Lady Mary. God help anyone who tried to be her enemy because Thomas is a lot more ruthless than Carson.
And despite him looking to get rid of Nanny West out of personal spite, I do think a large portion of it was he genuinely did not like her neglect of Sibbie, who was all that was left of the sweet Lady Sybil, who was one of the few in his life that had been kind to him.
Although Thomas might have made a lot of mistakes, he cares for the family from the bottom of his heart, especially he regarded Sybil to be the only one treating him as a friend in the house, and that he acknowledged her daughter is being abused. He defo won't take a blind eye to that.
Finnic I know. I like watching her expressions now as she deals with Mr. Carson. I'm waiting for her to lash out at him. I guess she's been too used to him being her boss at Downton Abbey.
+TonisiaC Mine, too. Cora displays such classiness to not get more angrier than she could have(shouting, cursing at the nurse). One of the reasons I'll miss this show.
It took a while for me to warm to Cora, but this scene gave me a great deal of respect and admiration for her. Absolute class, yet absolutely no nonsense, too. She did exactly what needed to be done without batting an eyelid, saw right through the nanny's lies and fawning, and wasn't intimidated in the slightest about taking care of business. Grandmother tiger!
The Dowager Countess may be scary at times, but this goes to show that if you upset Cora in any way, shape, or form, she will take you DOWN. One of the few characters I know who can make being a prim, proper lady look badass.
cora has demonstrated her American woman power quite often. she has an excellent skill of convincing her husband and imposing her thoughts and opinions onto others. it's where Mary gets it I'm sure. this clip though was precious because it's raw reaction and display of power as Woman of the house.
I would rather go up against the Dowager Countess's blustering than Lady Grantham's quiet fury any day! Magnificently terrifying in this scene.

Cora was a lady. That's why she handled the situation in such an elegant way. Had it been me, this Nanny would probably be at the hospital ITU, broken legs and arms and a very disfigured face, wrapped in bandages.
If yu are that violent then you should not be allowed to have kids/ G and sterilize yourself , and do these unborn kids and the world a favour, nobody should suffer you as a parent or as a person for that matter . .
When I was very little, maybe 1 or 2, we used to have a nanny who took care of me during the day while my parents were at work. My dad used to draw as a hobby and he had a long steel ruler that he kept in a drawer in his bookcase with the rest of his stationery. For a couple of weeks, he kept finding the ruler next to the TV, on the coffee table, and in various places around the living room with no recollection of having used it himself. After this happened a few times, he decided to ask my mom if she’d been using it. She was in the kitchen at the time, holding me in her arms. As soon as he walked in, ruler in hand, I started crying hysterically. My parents were confused for a moment until it dawned on them that the sight of the ruler was what had sent me into a state of terror. It became pretty clear as the crying would get worse whenever he’d shake it or point it in my direction. They realized the nanny was probably using it to “discipline” me whenever I cried too much or annoyed her in some way. I should specify I’m an only child and no one else could have touched it or taken it out of its drawer. They hadn’t been very happy with her in general. She clearly hadn’t taken to me and would do the bare minimum and spend half the time on her phone. I don’t think I need to clarify that we’ve never seen her since. She must have gotten an earful. My dad was incredibly protective of me and I wouldn’t have liked to be on the receiving end of that reprimand.
Cora is just the definition of class. She handled that scenario with such grace, and she was surprisingly calm, since her dead daughter’s daughter was being spoken to in such an unkind way. Cora is just amazing. Cora, The Dowager, and Lady Mary are my favourite characters on Downton.
I can't understand how anyone can like Mary. She's a horrible person, selfish, self centered, cruel, immoral. How she behaved with the turkish guy in her own home was truly shocking. How she treated poor Edith all her life. How she wasn't sorry at all when her fiancé died on the Titanic, etc, etc. Mary has a heart of stone, and only rarely does she show any humanity. I stopped watching the series only because I couldn't stand her character.
@@msinvincible2000 I agree. She is an insufferable snob. And I could never understand why she was so mean to Edith. There was no reason to be jealous of her, and why belittle her for being less attractive? She certainly didn't deserve darling Matthew and she contributed to breaking poor Lavinia' s heart. Her only redeeming qualities showed in her caring for Anna.
Mama Bear The third: "Thy place is not have an opinion, by thou shalt say it anyway" I swear to god this show can be summarised in its entirety by Mrs Hughes' line (while she's cleaning up the kitchen with Mrs Patmore after the electric beater accident, which I think is the scene Nanny West leaves) Mrs Patmore: What about that Nanny West? I never liked her. Mrs Hughes: Well, it's not my place to have an opinion... but I will say this *cut*
Shirley A Yes, it shows, while sadly, he didn't find love for himself, Thomas had a great affection for the children. I loved the final episode when George said to Thomas "Please don't go." So adorable in his little voice.
Thomas always knew something was up because she wouldn’t feed sibbie properly or even let anyone touch her. She would speak down to Thomas and that made him mad and so he reported her and it was worse then he actually thought
ugh that nanny is so pathetic to cry and say she is joking when clearly she was not if you notice how harsh and cruel her words were and the tone of her voice like she really hated that poor child she deserved to get fired
The reason ms. West is crying is because she knows just how bad she screwed herself up. Due to the way she was dismissed from her duties, she knew she wouldn't get a reference and that could ruin her chances of finding work again. Applying for work without a reference was just as damning as having a criminal record. The only reason you didn't get a reference is because you did something so bad that you didn't deserve it. Ms. West would have to be extremely lucky to get a new job at all.
@@pmparda If you had nothing to show for the time between the earlier job and the one you were applying for at the time, the employer would see that as a huge red flag. Unless you were in prison, which is definitely a bad thing, you technically should have been able to work. If West had been with the family for about 6 months and she went from one family straight to another, how would she explain the gap between then and the present. If the previous family knew where she went and there was nothing to show for the time after them, she must have done something awful. Even if she had to resign due to her health or a family emergency she would have been given a reference for her time. There was always a need for a nanny so she should have had no problem with finding employment, but to not have work for several months those days would indicate that the person is either too lazy to look for employment or there was something seriously wrong about her work.
alex jones I could only imagine Carson, seeing what affection he displayed toward the sisters, the horror, rage and disgust he'd have shown if hearing their children being abused like that.
But they both wouldn't have the power to fire the Nanny that effectively like Lady Grantham did she was very impressive in her cold fury and I guess she will make sure that this "Nanny" never gets power over a child anymore.
+Eric Naylor hmm weird; my comment vanished. Still, I do feel like given how Sibbie would be upset already at what Nanny West said, Cora wouldn't want to further frighten or upset the children.
Lady Cora handled the whole situation with calm dignity. She acted quickly to protect both children from harm by removing Nanny West from her post immediately, and banning her from further contact with the children.
Whenever I think of this scene, I cannot stop thinking about how foolish was Nanny West. Her personal views on Mr. Branson being a Chauffeur apart, how did she forget that both the kids are the grandchildren of Cora and Robert. And in fact they are more likely to be concerned about this grand-daughter of theirs, remembering their own daughter in the girl.
This scene stunned me. I knew the manmy seemes a bit screwy, but I was simply NOT prepared for what I heard, nor the venom directed at such a precious little girl. What really bothers me more then this one incident, is to imagine how many times little Sybil had to endure this in the past when no one heard. Or imagine what other horrors she may have been subjected to that were wors?!?It breaks the heart.
There was a fore-runner to this incident. I can't remember the details, but the family was occupied by some festivity and little Sibyl had been left alone by the Nanny. Carlson comes past and hears her crying, and picks her up.
Word would have got around the servants quarters and the wider village that none other than Thomas Barrow is that girl's self appointed guardian angel and he will make yourself hell if you mess with her.
I don't think I could have handled this as well as Cora did...And back in those days, I would have been well within my rights to give the woman a thrashing!
Yes, the tone with which Cora speaks in this scene is much more direct and whispers can often be much more effective, but a tiny bit of me, and I am not a violent person, would've liked to have seen that nanny get tiger slapped.
yes, he was also a journalist when he and Sybil lived in Ireland so he was more then just the family driver, some people can not get past how he started out just as they cant accept Sybil loved and was happy with Tom
It's called reflected snobbery. You still get it nowadays but perhaps in a less obvious way. She serves the future lord of the estate so she feels that puts her above the estate manager
Parents protecting their children are the greatest. My dad once saw me nearly drowned by a teen on purpose when i was 4 years old. Dad took that teenage boy and shoved him under the water himself until he let him up gasping for air. then he took me in his arms and we left. it was a school outing where parents and siblings where allowed, we had come there to see my sister.. not a single parent or teacher said a word they all stood their with their mouths open and i felt like my dad was a superhero saving me.
I still Remember when I was young when my nanny hits me and insult me, it takes awhile before when my mother arrive from a trip she saw scars in my face and arms all the marks from my nanny... In that very hour my nanny gone soon when police arrive..
Could you imagine Nanny West belting out a fabulous rendition of Broadway Babe in the show Follies ? This is exactly what Di Botcher who played Nanny West is doing in London at the moment and bringing the house down !!
This scene hit me mainly bcuz if I’d bin born then I would’ve bin considered a ‘cross breed’ 2, having an English mum & a Chilean dad & during the early days of my mum & dad’s relationship she was sometimes referred 2 as ‘Gringa’ meaning foreigner/outsider by some members of my dad’s family bcuz she wasn’t from the same culture as them but this (thankfully) eventually stopped.
One of the very few good things Thomas ever did up to this point (FYI I'm only up to episode two of series four so I don't know anything more than that yet!) was speaking out about this.
I remember my nanny used to lock me up in the room as soon as my parents left for work. Only because she wanted to watch TV in peace. She didn't threaten me or anything but yet I don't know why I didn't talk about this to my parents. But ofcourse months later my dad figured it out and she was sent back to her hometown. My parents were very kind to her but she still chose to lie and insult them. Some people really do not deserve our kindness.
My mam would be great with kids they are not eating enough Put ur coat on Ill ring doctors Get ur dinner first before homewrk Here your clothes have ur shower Get ur breakfast Be careful Dont go without umbrella Ill phone taxi its too cold
I used to like daisy, but towards the end of the show she became unwatchable. Its good to become educated and have opinions but she always just assumed whatever the hell she wanted and acted all devil may care and nobody did anything to her. She did this multiple times. And just because your educated doesn't mean you can be outright rude to anybody, least of all your employer and someone who outrank you that much.
I Saw that Episode of Downton abbey and Her ladyship was quite right in Dismissing that aurful and hurtful Nanny West as children feel things even at a early age and if it had been me I would have seen too it the children's Nanny would never obtaine another Position in any house as she is a wicked woman who is obviously unfit to look after any children and Cora Might be mild but there is a Woman who is as strong as her Mother in law
+Suggie Thames Probably because she was the daughter of the former chauffeur. In those days, for a servant to marry a member of the family they worked for was a scandal, and a lot of people looked down on the ones who did, both servants and society people alike. So the nanny thought little Sybbie wasn't good enough to be treated as an equal with the other baby.
+Suggie The Other political reasons apart, that Nanny was mean to the girl because she was foolish and she forgot that for Cora and Robert it is their grand-daughter just like George. In fact they must be remembering their own daughter in this girl.
+Suggie Thames Because she was the daughter of a "low class" chauffeur and also worse.. he was Irish (Irish were treated by conservatives back then much like they treat Mexicans and blacks in the USA today). Racism and bigotry knows no skin color..
Go corra. Oh nanny, your lucky it was only grandma telling you this Because everyone knows Before there was nanny cams the walls always had ears. Many walks still have ears
'Your values have no place in a civilized home'... substitute the word 'home' with the word 'country' and that is how you treat racists, elitists and anyone who is abusing any person or animal in any type, shape or form. This scene is ...just WOW ! PERFECT! And I would like to dedicate it to all those so called 'civilized' countries that have proved time and time again that in reality, in action, they don't even know the meaning of the word...
Yes because but it's a British made and set in Britain. If the nationality of character was rule for what terms to use, then any clip with British character in USA's series or film should use British terms. And they obviously don't. In fact a lot of yt american channels even use american terms for completely british film clips/trailers etc.
