Defensive player of the Year should be base on individual stats on how one player play defense and not base on teams achievements, otherwise, it should be Most defensive Team award and NOT Player.

It’s not just about wins. Rudy doesn’t have to do the amount of work Wemby does. If Rudy was on the Spurs team his numbers would be much higher, but the twolves are all around elite defensively, so the other guys are taking some of the stats. There’s also a whole boatload of stats that put Rudy way out ahead. Wemby needs a better team.

Their defensive falls by .7 of a point when he is off the court and his team didn't need him to hold the nuggets to 80! Regardless of that, it's not consistent in how they give out the award. With Wemby on the floor, the Spurs are one of the top 4/5 in the league. With him off, they’re one of the worst. That’s a huge affect a single player can have on a team. Rudy doesn’t do that. Take him off the Wolves and their D is still top tier. Wemby is the DPOY!!! Period.

Golbert has established himself as a stalwart in the new NBA center position. At the time of the trade, many people thought the Timberwolves overpaid to get him. But the Wolves had a vision how an elite defensive center would impact the rest of their team. Golbert definitely is a correct choice for Defensive Player of the year. And so are many others, but given how the Wolves barely missed a step even after Townes went down for an extended period of time; well it shows how good of a team the Wolves have, and the impact of Golbert for winning basketball.

If he is the right choice for the reasons that people claim, then why were the same arguments not used for Tim Duncan? It's only the criteria when they want it to be the criteria. Rudy's team defense drops by less than a point when he is off the court. Wemby is the Spurs defense. Wemby is clearly better than Rudy at defense.

@@dirtyfrench2926 How about the on court off court difference? Rudy is only netting his team .7 points when he is on the court. Wemby is netting about 10. Their defensive ratings are very close, but when your teammates play good help defense it actually helps your individual ratings. There is also something to be said for the stats. For example, Wemby played about 480 minutes less than Rudy and yet still destroyed him on the defensive stat sheet. Both are elite defenders, but the argument that your team should be involved in the conversation is a joke. If it is used then overcoming your team's weak defense should be valued more than just getting a boosted efficiency by great defensive players next to you. Frankly, it should be more focused on stats if there is a huge gap. Would 500 blocks be enough? 750? Where do we draw the line?

DPOY 2024 is an individual award for the best defensive player for the 2023-2024 season, None of what candidates did the years before (or will do the years after) matter and same for unfair treatment one player had in the past regarding the award. It's about personal defensive stats and reviewing the game to see the impact (or "hidden" stats) ONE player had on defense, on the court, during the season. In one case we are subjective and multiple players deserve it (and it should be called Defensive PlayerS Of the Year), even teams (Defensive Team Of the Year), your favorite player or the player on your favorite team, the player on the team with most wins etc. In the other we are objective, everything (stats and impact) is and should be fairly judged by the NBA and only one player deserves it and gets it. Others candidates are very good defenders but did not perform better than the one who won it the year the award is given. For what purpose you give individual awards based on performances if not?

I’m a life long Spurs fan. I’ve seen my fair share of top-self defender’s in the silver and black. Wemby may be the best of the bunch and he just turned 20! He would be robbed if he doesn’t win it this year. However, he does have some Mamba in him. If Rudy beats him out, he will leave no doubt and salt the earth these voters stand on. GSG!

Reasonable enough, though Duncan never got it for frequently anchoring BEST Defensive teams. I guess 2x MVP has to suffice for Timmy. So if/when Wemby becomes an MVP, will they not give him DPOYs because of it? After all, we all expect if he stays healthy, the DPOY could eventually be renamed the "Wemby" award, right? Unless league chooses that MVPs don't get DPOYs.

Rudy got his team to the best defense in the league and is the second best rebounder in the league but Wemby is the shot blocking leader whose top 10 in deflections both in total n per game & he gets above a steal per game. This is highly impressive because teams avoid Wemby and look for a miatch with any other defender. When Wemby is off the floor the Spurs are the worst n when hes on the floor they are one of the top defenses in the league. Edwards, mike Conley are top defenders in their position. Rudy can't get all the vredit for the teams defensive success. Victor should be the winner.

The wolves have 4 players in the top 20 of Defensive win shares as well as defensive rating. They are the top ranked defense with him on the floor and top 3 with him on the bench. The Spurs have 1 player in the top 115. They are a top 5 defense with Wemby on the court. Dead last with him on the bench. He finished his rookie year with more blocks than 80% of all players have ever had in a career and with 8 games with 7+ blocks. Gobert has 7 career games with 7+ blocks. So in all fairness if the name of the trophy is Defensive PLAYER of the year thats Wenbanyama hands down.

Of course Gobert has a stacked defense around him, and of course it helps him unfairly in this DPOY race. See, the award is not called "most valuable defensive player", its called "defensive player of the year", and that's not an oversight. Not to say that Gobert wouldn't deserve the award at all, but please stop pretending that having very good perimeter defenders around doesn't help you defend in the paint. OF COURSE IT DOES! Come on. When a player arrives at full speed in the paint because no one slowed him down, it's harder to defend on him. That should be pretty obvious.

Chet's Fan here. So, your argument is that Rudy won "The Most Valuable Defensive Player of the Year" not "Defensive Player Of the year". Let's breakdown these stats and opponent's FG% when they both on the floor and Opponent shot attempt deflect % too and Drop Defense FG made, Their Team ranking When they both leave the floor. Steals, blocks, Stocks, deflection. Opponent on the paint attempted FG made %. Opponent passing out from the paint stopped %. Let's go. Rudy won. That's it. But he is not a better defender than Wemby. Rudy has a guard defender to stopped or slowed them down. Wemby is all by himself. Rudy is great. But his greatest defensive year was not better than Wemby's rookie year defensively. Number never lies and never will.

If I get it right, your argument is that Rudy won on most defensive metrics but he doesn't deserve it because of his team? Rudy MAKES his team better. Something that Wemby hasn't been able to do yet. Rudy not only plays defense, but orchestrate the defense from his spot. Wemby plays great but... Spurs last year, 22 wins. Spurs this year, 22 wins. That's some mayor impact there. I will straight up say that Gobert does not deserve the award. Wemby is clearly the better defender, so if anyone other than him wins, they don't deserve it. That's how awards work when there is a clear winner. If it is closer, sure, then multiple people could deserve it. Not this year though. It is like Lebron for MVP in 2013. And there's no evidence to say that Gobert made his perimeter defenders better. The team defense, sure, but you can't definitively say his teammates got more defensively skilled bc of him. They made huge leaps by themselves. He has elite defenders who compensate for his weakpoints so he can focus on defending inside the arc. Everyone has heard the arguments for Wemby already, which go beyond just blocks, so I won't reiterate them. It now just comes down to whether or not you accept the arguments. It really seems like people who argue for Rudy just aren't listening, are stuck in their ways, and/or are too stubborn to accept fact.

Anyone with eyes and breaks down everything Wemby did this season would have to lean Wemby. No one in their right mind could try to say he couldn’t mimic the success Rudy had if they swapped teams. People try to say “if he was good enough he would make people around him better and carry them to wins” like such nonsense. Why not? There is no rule against it. Alvin Robertson did it in '86 and Dikembe Mutombo did it in 2001 while playing most his games on the loosing Hawks. Mark Eaton and Mutombo again both did it on .500 teams.

If Wemby is on the Minnesota Timberwolves team he would win DPOY this season, just as Rudy Gobert would win it if he were on the Spurs team (not this season). They have 3 potential DPOY candidates in their roster. That’s also why none of them deserve it… Wemby is by far the best defender in the world and should be the obvious DPOY. Giving the DPOY award to Wembanyama is a bit of a reward for mediocrity. He plays 30min on average out of 48, 14th in his conference, at the bottom of the table defensively (26th), at least 3 career highs on him and his team, his team even managed to win several times without him etc... And we want give him because he is a leader on blocks and he has steals?... We reverse the roles with Gobert, Bam or AD, no one says that they deserve to be DPOY like people do with Wembanyama.

Bro how dense can you be? If he swapped with anyone you just named he would’ve done more defensively than they did for their teams. Blocks and steals are a huge part of the award. The kid had more blocks and steals in his first 42 games than Rudy did in his entire first DPOY season and he did that all at the age of 19. When you say career highs were scored on his team yeah his team was one of the worst if not the worst in the league. Embid only scored 16/70pts on wemby. Can’t fault 20+ free throws and the rest of his team on that. He blocked the MVP 6 times in a single game and prevented them from claiming the #1 seed. Rudy is surrounded by defensive talent and when he’s on the court he doesn’t boost his team defensively anywhere near the level that Wemby does for his. To fault wemby for his team success is like basing school honors grades and attendance off of your peers instead of just you an individual. He does things defensively no one else can and is also a good shooter. Rudy is great and so is the others you named but to try to discredit wembys ability because of his team and the process they’re going through is a complete joke. Anyone with eyes knows his not only the DPOY but the best defender in the league period.
