On December 13, 2018, I was a guest on Femsplainers with Christina Hoff Sommers and Danielle Crittenden. We discussed, among other topics, the secrets of a long marriage, the problems with dating apps, how to handle a belligerent toddler, and the motivation of my radical feminist critics.
Femsplainers (femsplainers.com/) is “the gossipy, smart, witty conversation you’d have if all of your girlfriends (and some of your guy friends too!) were experts on the hot topics of the moment. High spirited and high minded, we don’t argue or whine but seek to get to the heart of the matter, over cocktails (or wine).” We taped in front of a live audience at AEI, the American Enterprise Institute (www.aei.org/
Ms. Hoff Sommers is the author of Who Stole Feminism? (amzn.to/2GJnkR4) and The War Against Boys (amzn.to/2SeuYo5) (a NY Times Notable Book of the Year) as well as Freedom Feminism (amzn.to/2Sfrd1B) , One Nation Under Therapy (amzn.to/2rNABOe) (with Dr. S. Satel), and The Science on Women in Science (amzn.to/2RaZyS1). She is resident scholar at AEI, studying the politics of gender and feminism, as well as free expression, due process, and the preservation of liberty in the academy. She has written for The Journal of Philosophy, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Wall Street Journal, The NY Times, The Washington Post, The New Republic, Slate, The Daily Beast, and The Atlantic, and is host of the popular video blog, The Factual Feminist.
Ms. Crittenden is the author of What Our Mothers Didn’t Tell Us (amzn.to/2BBtzAC), a novel, AmandaBright@Home (amzn.to/2Lwr33c) (the first modern work of fiction serialized in the Wall Street Journal) and a cookbook, From a Polish Country House Kitchen (amzn.to/2Ra1H0... Pulitzer-prize winner Anne Applebaum). She is a contributing editor to the Huffington Post, and has published in the Wall Street Journal, the NY Times, the Washington Post, and the Daily Telegraph. A former columnist for the New York Post, Ms. Crittendon has appeared on NBC’s Today show as well as CSPAN, MSNBC, PBS, CNN, and NPR.

@@B11-u5n That's obviously not true. Although I'm not a fan of being classified solely by one or two adjectives I identify as belonging to the liberal left (for the most part). And I believe Jordan Peterson is wonderful. He's obviously remarkably eloquent, very knowledgeable and seems to have very genuine and good intentions. He even takes being factual seriously. How could I not respect that? That also means I probably agree with 95% of his views and I believe he gives excellent advice on the topics he specializes in. The fact that I see the world from a different angle once in a while does not in any way take away from that.
@B11-u5n
@B11-u5n 3 года назад
@@ThorRavnsborg When I say liberal left I'm referring to the radicals who "protest" by burning, looting and murdering. While they make up less than 10% of Americans they dominate the media coverage and do billions of dollars worth of damage to our communities. There's nothing wrong with holding liberal or conservative values so long as you're a functioning member of society who understands and respects other point of views. The liberal left I'm referring to would show up to your house and vandalize it because you aren't left enough for them which makes you a right wing radical in their eyes.

I can count the amount of books that I’ve read start to finish on both hands. I feel like Jordan Peterson speaks to everyone, because the things he says are TRUTHS. Truths in the sense that he tells us, and reinforces these truths, truths that we all know and feel deep down inside. These human, sometime primal truths that everyone feels but not everyone will, or wants to admit. Also he understands how dangerous ideology’s can be and does not like radicals of any kind.

probably when you fall into the trap of only engaging with one source or one type of source and when you hear dissenting opinion it makes no sense with 99% of the other information you have perceived and interpreted as closer to the truth. People like that really are in a trap. Not only are they 'forced' by their habits to get angry when they start hearing or thinking such blasphemy and have an almost irresistible urge to stop listening and thinking, but they also, probably without noticing it, add on their own assumptions about him and his message. NOT ONLY THAT, but there's probably a sea of slander and lies about him in whatever type of source they trust, thus reducing the chances of listening to him even more At that point the only thing that can help them is a challenge in the form of an honest experience or a very well-timed and well-articulated message that they received in a time where their mind wasn't in defense mode.

I couldn't understand why my two sons started being touchy and aggravated when I discussed feminism or womens issues. I was really upset. They introduced me to the absolute deluge of misandry on the internet masquerading under the term feminism. I was appalled. I thought about it and realised I had completely missed what was happening in their world, and that my own way of discussing things was not acknowledging that massive shift from the aim of equality, or egalitarianism, to 3rd and 4th wave 'feminism'. I made a conscious effort to reframe what I was discussing, give more context, and differentiate my discussions in the context of the situation for men and women in different cultures or countries across the world. Most importantly I articulated what I thought was a challenge for men, and where I was finding it difficult to square circles between the obvious biological differences, rights and role impacts. I'm grateful to my sons for showing me what was happening to feminism and the impact. I was also touched when my son wrote an article on International Womens Day saying he was a feminist (old school) through discussion and empathy with the women in his life, not through indoctrination. My other son agreed. I may be at the point of stopping describing myself as a feminist, because the hijacking has gone too far and just the word causes a barrier that stops the necessary conversations for men and women to solve our challenges together.

@thalanoth

Being a feminist should not be a term applicable to men, as a description. Feminism as an ideology should have continued to be striving for equality in respect, justice, education, and economic outcome. It has blown straight past that into: "women are better than men and deserve everything be given back to women that have been taken by the 'patriarchy'!". Well raised and modern men should simply understand we are of equal worth, they don't need a title to describe their identity in how they relate to the female sex. By equal worth, that doesn't mean that we are the same, there are massive differences between our biology's and therefore our gender roles, but by morale worth we are equal. A few months ago I had to explain to my uncle what it has been like growing up with the dawn of the internet til now. Women have changed. Men have changed. The interpersonal relationships between them have started to truly become shallow beyond comparison to previous ages. The part in this interview when Dr. Peterson talks about the creation of birth control becoming one of the most impactful events of the century was truly eye opening. Being a male in the workplace is dangerous now, which, sadly, I know from experience. If anyone in passing conversation or even in meeting for the first time brings up how they describe themselves as a "feminist" I immediately am tense and avoid them from then on, including "male feminists".

Then I get some kind of religious and anti homosexual vibe from you, not to mention you put being gay, a meat eater and being a criminal in the same sentence. After that you sound a bit like a religious fanatic. Now ofc. I might be wrong. I’m neither homosexual, PC or religious so I’m mostly asking out of curiosity. It’s just if you’re a fanatic you go into the flat earth box with the rest of the entertainment.

I haven’t tasted dog? Have you? Probably doesn’t taste to bad but I normally don’t eat pets :). Slave to what btw? Care to elaborate? Slave to the bible? a book? A prophet? Some holy word? Oh you said dog food? Well I guess I eat dog food or wolf food or lion food? What do you eat? Rabbit food? Cow food, worm food? Pig food? Don’t get me wrong, religion had/has its purpose. The kings used it to control his people, it set boundaries for what is accepted in society. It also was the best way to explain what could not yet be explained with science. It also give/gave people hope. Some moral and ethical codes in religion are good. But mostly for those who have a weak moral/ethical compass to begin with. I respect your wish to not eat meat or kill animals. Just don’t expect the rest of the world to conform to your silly ideas. ;) Also I don’t know where you are from but dog food eater does nothing to me. Neither does slave, you can’t scare me with burning I hell or other such religious things either. Because I can’t be scared of something I don’t believe in, just as I don’t believe eating meat or being homosexual is bad. I just don’t care. The spelling thing was a bit childish but ok, point taken. I’ll take it up with apple since it’s their phone correcting for me.

Of course, Jordan Peterson also happens to be a narcissist, a charlatan, and an intellectual con man who doesn't even bother to learn the subjects upon which he lectures. He is a defender of free speech who silences other speakers, a fearless free-thinker who never hesitates to run away from debates, difficult questions, and controversial issues, a philosopher who rejects the conventional definition of truth, and a learned professor who has failed to read most of the great classics of the Western canon. “Women are more interested in people and Men are more interested in things” makes perfect sense to me from an evolutionary standpoint. Women were tasked with looking after the children and each other, so traits like care and compassion would be desirable. Men were tasked with hunting and processing the kill, so weapons and tools would have been absolutely essential. These traits are no less essential today for the continuation of our species.
@boneybone8123
@boneybone8123 2 года назад
That might sound like what an evolutionary standpoint is but in actuality, it is not. The quote you just used refers to the interest of people regarding possessions not personality traits or abilities. Overly simplifying the division of tasks between sexes as you put it is prone to lead the result of analysis or statistics erroneous. Care or compassion for instance, is highly relevant and required trait between male members of a hunting party in both the training and actual operation stages. Using of tools and weapons is also essential for females in the tribes in different situations. Males hunting and females taking care of children comes a lot later in the history of human beings and that is just a stylized version of a misunderstood data regarding history. Most artifacts and archeological findings indicate hunter gatherers were a lot more diverse in operations in their tribes, regarding workforce and gender roles. This is why it is not a valid evolutionary standpoint. As a species, we can not definitively achieve continuation while the environment, earthly or celestial is unpredictable and non-sustainable by our external manipulations.

I think Jordan Peterson has a very well-developed and complete view of society, our place in it, and the pathologies that people are suffering from, but that doesn't make him correct to-for lack of a better term-"oppose" nihilism. It's clear that he has a distaste for the concept and thinks it's responsible for many of our ills, but he can't do much to dispel the notion (or should I say fact) that outside our biological context, the Cosmos at large is indifferent to our presence in it. It's true that we have values instilled in us by our biology, but it's also true that when viewed from outside, none of the things we care about matters in any objective sense. Nihilism is a conceptual inevitability, and I think it makes more sense to come to terms with it rather than to try to obscure it with flowery philosophy.

Lately society kind of makes it seem like it's for entertainment but at the same time that it's dangerous/ important enough that the state must be involved "in every step" (like, unnaturally). @@eddiesanchez1899 Not really an insult, rather a form of advice lol. @eddiesanchez1899
@eddiesanchez1899 5 лет назад
yeehaw Now who’s being cringey? The point of my original comment was to point out the disparity between the types of people who actually care about equality, as opposed to the obnoxious 3rd wave campus feminist types. The problem is that both groups of people call themselves “feminists”, so name alone is no longer a good distinction. Rather, the term “egalitarian” would be a better word to use than “feminist”, to describe the former group, as the latter have largely co-opted the term “feminist”. If you would have read my original comment more carefully, you would have noticed I was specifically referring to Ms. Hoff Sommer’s brand of feminism as the more rational, egalitarian type and I said I think that this is what the word “feminism” is supposed to describe. While Ms. Hoff Sommers certainly seems to describe the *denotation* of the word “feminist”, the *connotation* of the word tends to conjure up the image of the “Big Red” type. A few of these I have personally met and don’t care for. My advice to you would be to use the word “egalitarian”, rather than feminist, which roughly means the same on paper, but is a more accurate definition of what you are describing and does not carry the cultural baggage of the term “feminist”.

While some like to think the difference between the "sane" & the "insane" is one of kind [ thus allowing them to feel more comfortable ] the difference is actually one of degree i.e. in the ACCURACY OF THEIR EVALUATIONS ! So, a less confusing explanation of G-S might be that it's the [ONLY] Non Newtonian Science of Evaluations which uses modern scientific methodology to solve every day life problems - TOTALLY CHANGED MY OUT LOOK ON LIFE ( along with ALICE MILLER ) !

Definitely one of the most reasonable interviews I've ever seen with Peterson. So many interviewers want to jump to a battle, interrupt, misconstrue statements, and personally attack him instead of listening. They all added to each others' context and included each other in the conversation as well as one could expect. Well done.

@@aurtu I am not from África but from latinamerica (another part of the world in development) and well imho I woul say that one of the main problems that is very common here is a lack of empathy due to individualism and the instability of the states. There are a lot social gender roles that are pushed on to women and men. Equality of opportunity is difficult to achieve in these countries due to many reasons that trascend the concepts of just genders and sexes, but nonetheless one of the results is that there is a lot of pressure on what is expected of you bc of your sex. Also, there is a lot of violence bc of individualism and how unstable the countries are. I would say that the fight of feminism has more ground in latinamerica bc of thede reasons. Pursuing Equality of opportunity is something needed. Even though there is no real oppression from the state, society c can be really agressive against the uncommon here, which creates a lot of intolerance and agresiveness. Still in last 10 years, radical feminism has been certainly increasing which I personaly find extremely unhelpful due to how it antagonizes part of the population and simplifies every problem by gender roles and oppression. And bc of how unstable these countries are, you can find A LOT of problems which can be simplified like this. But again, it isnt helpful if we want to find the root causes of it. There are many other things that come at play with the problems developed and developing in latinoamerican countries, but I just wanted to give a quick idea for comparison.

I'm an Asian woman who always love being independent and always admiring people with great intelligence. After stumbled upon Dr Jason Peterson lectures and some of his interviews on this platform, I developed tremendous admiration towards his teachings, wisdoms and incredibly sharp wit. From a woman perspective, I absolutely admire his work to encourage young people to be more responsible towards their own life to create better life in a larger scale, I don't I understand why some people could misinterpreted his teachings and painting images of him that is so way off? We need more scientists and scholars from other fields that use their intelligence and expertise to help to build society towards better direction, especially for younger members of the society because they're the one going to carry out the legacy and sustaining our humanity. Dr Jason Peterson decision to pass down his knowledge truly admirably because that's a spirit of a true scholar, to bring knowledge and enlightenment to the darkness of human ignorance (close mindedness+stupidity) Dr Peterson, keep spreading your knowledge and wisdom bravo

The reason some folk hate him is that his simple message of "you're not a victim, you can improve yourself" opposes the very basis of their ideology - they imagine there is an evil, oppressive patriarchy. They try to corral all the different kinds of oppressed victim into a single leftist movement to create a powerbase. Peterson dismantles the "identity politics" that is their main weapon in this endevour. He espouses the principal of individual freedom over group rights. He also points out the contradictions in victim politics such as Trans Women vs Feminists. Now, since I have been watching videos of Peterson not for so very long, about 3 months, I am equipped with the thinking that picks apart the kind of Leftist dogma which is usually based on the three cornerstones of social justice, equity and inclusion. I'm just an average Joe and I believe there must be hundreds of thousands like me who have been educated by Peterson, not bullied nor brainwashed. The Left are absolutely outraged at Peterson's betrayal of their millions of victims and that is where the hatred comes from - not, in general from the "victims" themselves, rather from their "champions". You'd think that with so many Leftist college professors, they'd be able to win the argument without the need to resort to hatefulness. I do hope I've not been teaching you to suck eggs!
