I like the re-sole of these Docs. I've been wearing Docs for over 30 years. If I could have been able to have them re-soled 25 years ago, I would still have my original pair. So much sentimental value in my Docs.

25 years ago when I lived in Europe Doc Martens were the total rage. Every young person seemed ho have a pair. However when it came to resoling the boots my shoemaker told me they were of such low quality in contrast to real leather shoes or boots. He also told me that these boots were not made to be resoled. Back than I never even heard of throw away shoes or boots as my family had everything resoled and rebuild. Now I watch Brian and - yes he is probably thinking "cheap shoes" - but "I will make them better than they ever were before".
@Chrisb8s
@Chrisb8s 4 года назад
Roman Iacobucci and the cost of Resoling then is probably 2 or 3 times the original price. They must be loved by someone.

They still are popular, have a cult following, fourty years ago as a teenager in the uk I wore a pair of boots to work every day, super comfortable.
@geoffknight4881
@geoffknight4881 4 года назад
Doc Martens are real leather shoes. It takes around 3 months to "break in" a proper pair of these shoes or boots as the leather and construction is so tough. I know, I've worn many a pair in the past. The sole is a special compound hence the name "AirWare" or Bouncing Sole" which are designed to resist acids, oils, fats, petrol and alkali. The sole is estimated to last around 20 years. Suggest that perhaps you speak to your "shoemaker" and see if he can suggest any of his stock soles with similar properties and longentivity
@boerenkool
@boerenkool 4 года назад
There's no way they last 20 years or anything close - you can go through the soles in less than a year easily & I've done it (and this was before they off shored production). Anything but "so tough".
@campirider
@campirider 4 года назад
I remember it took about 6month for them to be broken in but after 2 years the soles were worn thru. I did walk allot in them all over the place (probably because then I didn't have a car yet). But they certainly were not of high quality.

I knew that ripping off the pvc welt and replacing it with a leather one to which a 'proper' sole could be attached, was possible (and have wanted to see someone attempt this for a while) but the time spent doing must surely cost more than a new pair, so not really economically sensible? HOWEVER, when it comes to personal stuff like shoes and boots, sense often takes a holiday... Thanks for showing us it being done though, Brian!
@ianturnbow7011
@ianturnbow7011 4 года назад
The leather is cheap, the construction is garbage, and the goodyear welt is a pain to re-sole. Whoever sent these in must have a good deal of sentimental value invested.
@graememorrison333
@graememorrison333 4 года назад
@kerensky77 Wow. I would've thought about £150/$200 tops. (Then again, hand-stitching a welt on isn't exactly a five minute job.)

The shoes definitely had a senimental attachment to them, would have been cheaper to buy a new pair for sure Well we can look at it this way, its job security for Brian the Bootmaker and he can keep making quality videos for us all to watch and enjoy
@jeremiahmendoza387

Nu uh Brian says it makes more sense to resolve because their sole lasts longer than another pair and then you just get minor repairs and save more in the long run.
@pfmedic

Plus you don’t have to wear in a new pair. It’s also worth mentioning that, two years ago, it was easy to find a pair of Docs or Redwings in your size. Today, everything is in short supply. Definitely going to be sending Brian my 8053s!

I have a pair of Docs from 30 years ago that I wear occasionally and I remember breaking them in over a few months and then they formed to my feet and fit me really nicely. I wear them maybe twice a year now. They were the actual made in England ones. I bought a pair of the Chinese versions once to see how they were and the quality was nothing in comparison. The leather on mine would make them worthy of this process
