Dr Michael Mosley's final walk before death on Greek island 

As an Australian we all know that 40 degrees means more like 52 degrees in the direct sun. The temperature readings are taken in the shade. As soon as you feel that 40 degree sun on your skin you just know it is going to fry your body in about 30 minutes. We all know we need about 2 litres of water per hour in such temperatures as well. Not one bottle for a whole journey. Nobody walks anywhere in Australia on a 40++ degree day. Especially in the middle of the day, in dark blue clothing. It was a risk not worth taking for an un-acclimatized Englishman and has ended in the saddest possible outcome for such a lovely man. It is all so tragic and senseless.

I think it shows us that we are all mortal and need to respect nature and the climate.

On the fateful Wednesday, 5th June, Dr Mosley did NOT 'go hiking' but was was returning to his accommodation at friends' (Merchant House, Yalo) when he took the wrong turn at Pedi. Disoriented and getting weaker and weaker, after nearly 2 hours under searing heat, Dr Mosley found himself alongside a seaside restaurant in Agia Marina. If a client or a barman had seen him, if that stupid wired fence wasn't there, exhausted, dehydrated Dr Mosley could have staggered straight into the resort, be in the shade, (slowly) sip water with a pinch of sugar, get his electrolytes/essential minerals, call an ambulance - or rather, a water taxi - receive medical attention and LIVE! But none of the 'ifs' materialised. Instead, poor Dr Mosley was just left there, on the other side of the stone and wired fence for 4 days, unseen and unattended. Dr Mosley's loss hurts so much - is it ever going to hurt less - it's like we know him, that he is family... RIP, dear, dear Dr Mosley. Thank you for my new (and healthy) life.

This is just so tragic! I’m so sad about his unnecessary passing. I don’t know why, but it has hit me hard. Maybe because it could have been avoided. People, PLEASE do NOT even go to the beach in 40C+ heat unless it is before 10am (unless it is that hot then) or in the evening!! Why were TWO doctors on the beach in the middle of the day in such a heatwave?? He said he felt unwell when he left his wife. He could have had the beginnings of heatstroke then? It’s very likely, because he took a wrong turn so may have been disorientated already? There are so many ‘if onlys’: If only someone had gone with him. If only he had his phone on him. If only he had more water or electrolytes on him. If only he’d taken a water taxi. I know all these are pointless now, but I hope it helps save someone else’s life. I’m in Australia, & am very heat aware. If I’m gutted by his death, imagine the pain & grief his family are going through. Deep condolences to them. May he RIP. 😥💔🕯️🕊️

Don't go walking in high heat - folks. Take it easy in the shade stay hydrated.

All those rocks would have been heated up and radiating a lot of heat so Dr Michael Mosley would have been subjected to a lot of heat from all angles. Worst than bushwalking where at least there might be some shade spots and the terrain absorbs heat rather than reflects it.

I think he was upset, getting more so as time ticked away in that burning sun. Please show some compassion, he had worrying health issues, possibly that caused his death ultimately, together with the burning sun. (He had said afew years ago, that he suffered amnesia after swimming; and his battle with diabetes that killed his father. Have heart, he was a wonderful person . 🙏🧡💐

Thank you. Too many unanswered questions that begin back at the beach when he first said he did not feel well and wanted to return to the house. This is where the tragedy begins...how did the wife and island friends respond...did they just say "see 'ya!." Very unsettling that he set out. Had he ever been there before? Then SIX hours pass. What was the wife and island friends doing that whole time and was no one worried sooner.

Why would a man with all his medical knowledge, walk a treacherous unshaded route like this, in searing heat? Especially as, before he left his wife on the beach, he appears to have told her he didn’t feel well? Very weird!🤷🏼‍♀️

Many Greeks are heartbroken at the tragic death of Dr Mosley. Heatwaves are deadly. Please take them seriously when you are visiting the country. A 2.2 mile walk in high heat is a dreadful idea, and can turn out deadly, as in Dr Mosley’s case. Please take heed and look up what to do in high heat ahead of time.

I agree, some poor judgment on Michael's part here perhaps that has to be said, but still what a great loss to the world, and so bloody unexpected. Just sad.

A year before he was on a boat and decided to swim back to the shore. When he emerged from the water he was so unwell, he was taken to the hospital as he couldn't remember his name and didn't recognise his wife. This was very scary for them. One would have thought he'd be more careful since. Maybe there was some underlying reason for his poor judgment? I'm not a doctor but I'd never go out in that heat. His poor family must be suffering beyond belief. ❤

Very sad, but it has to be said, some smart people have no common sense when it comes to 40 degrees temp, he shouldnt have been walking anywere.

I’ve had sunstroke and it comes on really quickly from nowhere one thing I didn’t notice was that I stopped sweating hours before bc after working outside in 33c. I was very fortunate to crawl to a pavement outside a medical centre, but it felt like dying at the time. My blood pressure was 60 over 50. I would never take it for granted again. I cannot understand why Claire didn’t stop him walking when he was unwell without a phone in the heat. This terrain looks harsh and not even very picturesque.

Dr Mosley gave us his greatest health warning yet by his death. Never never Exercise in 40 degrees heat in un 3:08 sheltered terrain. Heeding this will save lives. Just as this fine gentleman’s life health teaching has saved lives. terrain.

There’s the heat of the sun and the reflected heat and light from the rocks - it must have been unbearable. Deepest condolences to his wife , family and friends. Michael Mosley was one of the good guys who wanted us to take care of our own wellbeing and avoid medicine, such a shame he may have mis-judged the situation on the day and the exertion needed.

As a soldier over 47 years ago. We went on excacise down a mostly dry rockey river bed for 4 Days, I can tell you it was harrondus to walk on rocks and stoney ground in the heat. Joy comes when you finally come on flat ground to walk on Could not understand, why you would want to walk in the mid day sun , did neol coward write a song about it

The terrain looks very ugly and difficult to walk. Being out in 40 degree heat would have made it even worse. May Dr. Mosley rest in peace. He is in good hands now and safely home. He has only gone on ahead of us. Sincere sympathy to his family. With love from Ireland. ❤️

You would need all the ‘ounce of energy’ to walk on that surface. The heat and the rocky obstacle course would drain away very quickly your energy reserves. RIP Michael. You deserved better than this outcome.

Mad dogs and Englishman…why on earth would a medical professional embark on this challenging hike in intense heat and his wife, being a doctor herself, should have stopped him. This tragedy could have been avoided.

Shocking how he could have done this walk in that heat. I’m gobsmaked. Why? I’m really feeling so sad for his family an close friends. I’ve always followed him on TV an radio. So so sad.

Pptently there is some sort of. Truck or markings from Pedi which brings you out on the other side of the resort. There is. Sign t the start of this pointing to Agia Marin. Somehow, sadly he missed that and ended up going over the rocky unforgiving mountain which brought him down the wrong side of the resort with no entry until you get right to the bottom. That’s how I see it. Poor guy.

One could sprain an ankle or break a leg on those numerous rocks, let alone combat the high temperatures with only a small bottle of water. What was he thinking? So sad that he had to die in this way so close to help.

I fainted from heat exhaustion while walking to my barn.. I was hydrated, but the heat was too much for me. For two days, I couldn't get up. I hope he didn't suffer. Rest in peace.

Terribly sad!

Terribly sad to see just how close he was too help, but he must have become disorientated. Sitting down for a moment to rest was fatal, even in that tiny spot of shade. If he'd even managed to get up against the fence someone at the resport would have easily seen him! But whether in time or not is another question. Such a bright compassionate man who did so much for others...

I wonder what happened to the umbrella? I feel devastated and so sorry for his wife and family. I went through a sudden and tragic loss a year ago, my husband collapsed in the garage and was found 3 days later, i was in Germany he in the USA. I am praying for Dr. Moseleys wife because it is not only grief but also such a shock. When someone dies so unexpectedly and tragically it is super difficult. He was a wonderful man and losing someone so special is absolutely terrible. I just can't believe how a healthy brilliant doctor takes such risks.. Mindboggling!!!!!

None of it makes any sense to me, even if you got lost, you have the horseshoe bay as a reference. How would anyone think a solution to any problem, would be to randomly walk up the side of a mountain, when they are so obviously fully aware of the sun - not many people carry an umbrella on a Greek holiday

What a waste of a life. I hope they put up better signposting now.

He probably thought it’d be a relatively quick walk back to his place. But having been to the Grand Canyon area, which is a bit similar in terms of temp and barren appearance, even 5 minutes would’ve been too much

So heartbroken over this story and I loved Michael Mosley and his work 💔 I was in Kos, not far from Symi, during the week he died. I really really struggled with the heat and made sure that my family and I stayed by the pool and stayed hydrated. I can’t even imagine how horrific his death was but it felt like being in a giant oven, even on a resort, even the breeze was hot during that heatwave 😥

I dont even care to speculate why on earth he took on this walk. He is so dearley missed, I respected his enormous knowlage, his kindness and will to help us all. Thank you for everything. Thank you for saving the health of my whole family. The loss is felt to the core of my soul 💔

Apart from the extreme heat, that would have been a tough walk picking his way over lose rocks. Terribly sad, he was a terrific broadcastor and obviously a caring lovely human being.

My mornings started with this man's voice. How dearly will we miss him... Simply tragic

They don't want to release the CCTV footage from the bar at the resort? Showing Dr Mosley making his way down part of the mountain. Why? So they had all the rescue teams searching for this man when this resort could have reviewed their CCTV. Dr Mosley body was left for 40 degree heat for 4days. So very sad.

Some people say this video is in poor taste but I just want to feel closer to this great man in his last minutes. I am glad he had such a full life and was so well loved.

Why on earth was this section of the beach fenced off?.. very sad indeed.

Even when I was around 20yrs old and a total thicko and felt "invincible" I would not of walked into the unknown in searing heat being an English man who is not used to any form or heat. He must of had some sort of breakdown before doing this.

God bless you ❤🙏🏼 ( I find it mind boggling that Dr. Mosley, given his knowledge and understanding of the human body would have even contemplated walking all that way alone in those conditions, weather and terrain ( with no mobile phone, apparently they only had the one mobile, which was allegedly left behind back at their accommodation ) and feeling unwell , in extreme, searing heat, and being a man of 67 years old.. it greatly surprises me that Dr. Mosley wasn't accompanied back to the accommodation given that he apparently told them that he wasn't feeling well .

You are absolutely right, dear contributor. D Mosley was NEVER 'left' there nor was he 'unattended", as I insensitively commented. Where he lay beside the stone and wired fence, he was virtually not seen, thus, he was undiscovered for 4 days under the searing heat. The perimeter fence was (is) not stupid, as I called it, in utter desperation/ grief. There has to be a fence to protect property, staff and clients. I never met Dr Mosley, I just read his books and watched his programmes, but his loss hurts as if I knew him. So, I blame the "stupid" fence, fate and you name it. And I'm left wondering if, in the absence of a (necessary) fence, Dr Mosley might have been able to stagger inside the resort, ask for water with something in it to restore his electrolytes, keep him conscious and utter requests to the barmen obviously not medically trained, like him and Dr Bailey. I also wonder if - severely dehydrated and exhausted by then - was beyond medical help. Either way, I hope he didn't suffer too much or for too long ... But I still think that his was not a silly or irresponsible hike under the scorching sun. Dr Mosley was genuinely trying to go back to his lodgings (The Merchant House) in the Lower part of Symi, which they call Yialos. Where CCTV caught him - walking in the main street of Pedi - I wonder if his Greek was good enough to ask where the bus stop was and/or understand the reply. An acquaintance who is familiar with a few Dodecanese islands tells me that the yellow shuttle bus into Yialos (and Choro, the upper, old part of Symi) as well the water taxi - is unavailable at the specific hour when Dr Mosley found himself in Pedi. My friend also volunteered that trails, routes, paths (and the elusive bus- stop in Pedi) are not clearly marked in Greek or in English. She likes to travel to Symi in late May/early June because heat waves are uncommon then. But this year, temperatures went above 40°C, as 'bad luck' would have it? When I put together all the pieces of this tragic puzzle, it's almost like poor, cherished Dr Mosley was totally in Fate's cruel, indifferent hands on that dreadful Wednesday 5th June. RIP, Dr Mosley and thank you for my new, healthier life and reverting my elder son's diabetes type 2 with your writing and your fun, accessibl, non- judgmental radio/ TV programmes. You are very loved and sorely missed.

Not wishing any offence to Greek people but - after seeing this video, why would anybody want to go on holiday to such a blistering hot barran Hell Hole? Especially someone who values their health as much as Michael Moseley? We all moan about the weather in Britain but we live in a Green, Lush, Arcadian Country compared to what a lot of people have to put up with. We are so lucky to live in Britain. Thank you God.

A very exposed area with lots of concentration to move about .I have seen birds die of heat stress in these conditions . Mosley was a fit man for his years .Coming out of a British winter he would have been loving the warm weather . Unaware of its danger.

Rough terrain hard on body anyway ...coupled with the heat 🔥 it's no wonder Dr Moseley had difficulty .....He was a popular Dr at home in the UK 🇬🇧 with many television health shows and he will be missed by many ...not forgetting his family ....He's at peace now ...no one can hurt him ...💔🥀😞D

Now one more tourist had died at Samos on a similar path , he was in same age as well. Ppl be aware it is HEAT RECORDS in Greece now. Don’t act the same way as you were walking in your neighborhood.

I start to feel it was meant to be it was his time to go so many things conspired together it was not one mistake he made but far too many 1/ going for a walk in extreme heat. 2/ in the worst time of the day about 1 pm 3/ not taking his mobile 4/ not knowing the area well 5/ going on the wrong path The only way I can explain this tragic tragic end of this wonderful man

This video shows that some mainstream media are “learning”…..no hype, no sensationalisim, no endless repetition to “pad” the “story” out. It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words….then video is worth millions of words as evey frame is a picture. Welcome to the new milenium where almost everybody has a camera and those cameras are tiny and far higher resolution thsn the big broadcast studio cameras of 50 years ago (Matconi Mk-VIII on my mind)…and this completely changes how we see and report on happenings such as this. So, bravo….you sre “brave enough” to not turn the comments off, (and you can learn from the feedbsck in them)…and we get all that we need…we see (pretty much) through Michael’s eyes…no prattling commentry, no needless post production, just what he saw pretty much, and the conditions thst prevailed st the time. You can clearly see how hard and taxing that terrain is to move over! ... Imagine being overcome with heat and trying desperately to get over all that quickly for water and shade.

I have ALWAYS hated the sound of cicadas, it means heat which I hate

I know it's only speculation, but I did wonder if there was more to his walk than just exercise or tourist curiosity. He has in the past got success out of health fads and diets, so maybe he was trying something new in that line. He could hardly have expected to go from feeling ok to collapsing in the space of a mile, so maybe he was testing out what exercise combined with heat might do to his body in terms of weight and insulin etc. We all have our pet obsessions, and his was the human body, so maybe he was trying something out.

The heat and glare off the rocks and sea is disorienting in 45 degree heat. The path The Mirror reoorter took was apparently a proper path, there are frequebtly blue and red dots on the rocks to guide you back down, but these are very easily missed and othe routes taken, in preference. Check the Times Radio report very heart moving.

If I wasn’t feeling well my wife would have come with me in the 35 plus years we’ve been together we’ve never gone off on our own after feeling unwell

😢 Very sad-a great loss. He did such a lot for the world with his all health investigations. A bit reckless at times, I guess he died as he lived!

I never heard of the man but this story caught international attention for days. Then we learn how he died. All kinds of questions and all the wife can say is that he "was almost there" and how funny he was and how in love they were...blah blah. We're all thinking, hey lady, tell us what happened back at the beach and why didn' anyone think twice.

Please people buy a paper local map. Don't totally rely on cellfones 🌿
