What we found was much worse than anything I could have ever imagined."
Ed Southgate reports for The Sun in Symi Island, where Dr Michael Mosley's body was found after 5 days of frantic search.

I think people should try to avoid thinking that he might have been saved by reaching that marina. It's a very isolated spot on a small island, and medical help would not have been immediate. He left this world doing a walk on an island he loved, and that is something his family should take some comfort from.

One of the best tv presenters of the last 20 years for me. His tv docu program "Inside the Human Body" in 2011 where he featured and narrated was superb and lives long with me ever since. Such a tragic, sad, lonely and agonising way to go out on his last breath. Michael isn't the first and certainly won't be the last to get into trouble on such adventurous walks, but help yourself and your cause if you do by taking light supplies to replenish your fluid levels, a medi bag, sun visor or cap to keep the sunrays off, little snack bar or two to consume and build up lost energy, and most importantly a ways of telecommunication whether a reliable cell phone, a two way sos radio, a flare or a location beacon on a smartwatch while you carry out the other stuff. All that can be held in a waist bag and not weigh you down. RIP Michael, you will be missed.

CCTV footage showed Dr Mosley stumbling around for 20m on what should have been a 5m portion of the walk. It sounds as if he was in crisis then. It’s odd that journalists are surmising he’d have “made it back to have a drink and cool down.” He had a medical episode on the mountain. If he’d staggered to the marina he’d likely have had the same very sad outcome. Such a shame he chose the wrong challenge in such intense heat. He was always so careful and hyper aware yet put himself at such risk. We don’t yet know if something more sinister was happening for him that might have struck at any time. RIP.

I’m still amazed that people think he intentionally went on this exact walk. At the village of Pedi he was supposed to go left on the road back which would have taken 30-40 mins, by accident he went right which took him on this mountainous route that would take 3 hours. So many people saying how he planned badly for it etc, he obviously didn’t plan to do this 3 hour route so it wasn’t planned
@hailandplaice
@hailandplaice 20 дней назад
@@JumpingPlaces I don't think it was an accident, I am not even sure you can avoid seeing the main road as you go through Pedi, and I bet he would have looked at maps that day and before he even got to the island. I think he simply did not want to take what he would have thought of as a very boring option to walk on a main road and then sit in the apartment for hours waiting for his wife and friends to come back. So he chose to walk onto the hill to get a view, believing it would then be fairly easy to get to Agia Marina for water and a rest before turning back to Pedi. But in actuality the path, at least on the side he went (there may be an easier path the other side which apparently is signposted on the hills) was more a climb and absolutely unsuitable to attempt alone in that heat.

Well, one thing to realize that many people don't, and I know this because I live in Houston. I almost got too hot Sunday morning at 9am in 91 F weather when I was mowing the yard, because heat in Houston, Texas, is very dry. There is NO WIND. So, once you get sweaty, your clothes stick to you, and your body can't sweat to relieve the heat. It feels like a sauna. Might say 91 F, but it's more like 100+ (or 103 - 110) heat that your body is fighting. Because your body absorbs the heat and can't sweat to lower the temperature. Honestly, I had to strip down on my front porch -- after my mowing and just sit down and breathe. Because it was that hot after just 35 to 45 minutes of intense exertion. So, I can see it easily happening in a terrian that has no shade and dark colors, which act like asphault and add 20 to 30 degrees extra to temperature. So, I feel for Dr. Mosley if that MUGGY temperature, slow-to-walk within terrian, and desert-like environment. Easily take a person out.

Very sad to hear. However, for an intelligent man he was very foolish walking without his mobile and ample water at least.

He left his phone back where they were staying. Maybe just to have a day without tech. I think he was heading to Pedi and then planned to get a bus or walk back to where they were staying , which was about a half hour walk. But I think he missed a turn off and ended up heading out towards Agia Marina. It's so sad he was just outside the wall. He probably collapsed or fell. So terrible. 😢

Why was he on the far side (north side) of the bar/taverna compound? The obvious more travelled route (visible on google maps satellite imagery) from Pedi would reach the compound on the south side, a couple of hundred yards less terrain to cover. He therefore appears to have left the path and headed for the mountain top, descended along the ridge, then when he hit the fence he was at the mid-point, left or right being of equal distance to reach the beach

@charleswhite758 Your deductions line up with some words from Dr Claire Mosely today. "We're so proud of him. He nearly made it to the summit." She would know her husband's MO better than anyone.

@@comealongcomealong4480 I think all she said was "He nearly made it" (i.e. to the bar/taverna). No mention of summit. But what adventurous person could resist conquering that little mountain and gaining a spectacular view?

He went the wrong direction. He was meant to be walking back to where they were staying, which was a town north west of pedi, but he walked north east instead. I think he might have had the beginnings of heatstroke that morning because he told his wife he felt sick. So perhaps he was already less than 100% from any walking the day prior.

@@Daz555Daz Wrong turn? That's like saying someone took a wrong turn and walked into the sea until they were out of their depth and drowned. He wasn't lost, he knew he was walking up and over a huge hill and that it was clearly off the main path but he greatly underestimated how far and how difficult it would be in that heat.

@@tomclark15 I’m still amazed that people think he intentionally went on this exact walk.

@@JumpingPlaces This is my point, you can’t accidentally walk up a mountain, instead of taking the single clear and obvious signposted road back to the town. The road that they traveled through in the morning to get to the beach. He walked off path away from civilisation up a visibly very rocky hill. He obviously just underestimated the length and the elevation and thought he could be up and over in 20/30 minutes like with the walk he made to Pedi.
