Please folks from colder countries, take heed of this story and remember it when you go abroad. People in hot countries siesta because it's so dangerous to be outside in extreme heat; if you're exploring somewhere new, take your phone with you so you can get help if needed; always have water on you when hiking/walking, especially in hot weather; and eat salty foods like sardines if possible to keep your electrolytes balanced and encourage you to keep hydrated.

Definitely. Especially with the UK having fairly tame weather and temperatures, I can see how it would be easy to fall into habits and overlook the dangers when you're somewhere hotter. I've nearly gotten into trouble in Spain because I'm not used to having to worry about the midday sun. I have no interest in ridiculing the poor man. A very sad case.

I've walked that route in only 27 degree temperatures and it is horrendous! It's like being in the desert! No cover, rocky terrain and you are constantly looking out for the dots on the rocks to follow the route! If you miss one - basically you are stuffed! The guide on Symi said it was walkable - we walked there but got the taxi boat back! I remember at one point saying to my wife: "Go on, leave me here, save yourself!" It was a joke at the time but now I realise how bad it could have been! Maybe its time there were signs put up to stop people walking there! I love Symi and I don't want it to get any bad press but at the end of the day it may be time to educate the travel agents! That is not a safe route, especially as temperatures continue to rise each year! It is just so sad that it ended this way! Thoughts to Michael Mosley's family and friends!

I was in Crete on a walking route. It was barely marked out, that we even wondered if it were a walking route. Just little carvings on little trees. Anyway, took us ages to get out of the place but luckily it was only 20 degrees late September and it started to rain.
@simeonbanner6204
@simeonbanner6204 27 дней назад
Oh man... haven't we all been there. I know I have in more cooler situations. It's frightening, even in this country, how situations can change. I've been out just camping, relatively warm, then cool wind, drenched rain and suddenly you are shivering. I guess that's why survival specialists are really highly skilled: that knowing what to do when the plan goes wrong. Ironic I used to listen to a bbc on survival stories then or before Moseley's great podcast on health. I thought he would be found or come through. Still can't get used to the idea. Seems so senseless.
@laremabella

Perhaps they should remove all the little signs and not call it a walking route. It only encourages people to walk in areas that are dangerous to walk. Where I live I take long walks and when following small walking signs it makes u feel a false sense of safety. I've ended up near cliff edges

Aussie here, and not throwing anyone under the bus or being disrespectful to Dr Mosley - but.. 40 degrees and acres of rocks reflecting up the heat. That's a big no-no for anyone, as well as elderly people. If you must do that in summer start at first light and aim to be finished by 10.00am at the latest. Hat, sunscreen, and as much water as you can carry in a backpack- 3 or 4 litres min for that time frame and remember that water is heavy. Drink lots of water the day before and don't start out dehydrated. If you know it's topping 40 degrees by noon don't do it at all, preferably. Only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun.

There comes a point when delirium sets in and that prevents the ability to find safety. I did something similar in Turkey once. Multiple errors. Underestimated distance of walk into town. Understimated water and drank bottle within first 15 mins. Forgot wallet and phone so had to walk back as no bus/taxi money. I ran straight into the sea, clothed halfway back as I was dangerously hot. That may have helped me, I was also a lot younger. My brother in law was about to come looking for me in the car when I arrived back at the villa. Very burnt and needing a long soak in the pool.

A few more steps or seconds were not going to help with heatstroke. Even if he got to shade or had water 40° heat will still affect you for 20-60 mins or longer after you get out of the sun unless you get fluids and get into a very cool bath for a prolonged time your organ's will still be affected. A sad and preventable loss. Also don't wear dark clothing in extremely hot weather as it will increase your internal body heat and create conditions for heatstroke to happen faster. @Ozymandi_as
@Ozymandi_as 24 дня назад
Perhaps you don't know enough, not being there, nor having access to all relevant information, say about the local dog population, or the extent of decomposition. Still, you can test some of your concerns. Say you are standing by the starting blocs on a 100 m track. Unknown to you, just by the finishing line, concealed behind a thin gauze, a large piece of raw meat is on the turn. Atmospheric conditions are such that there is a very slight prevailing breeze in the direction from start to finish. For some reason, a large amount of seaweed has also been left in the warm up area just behind you. How likely are you to notice any odour from the rotting meat 100m away? Answer: no chance. Odour travels by diffusion in still air, which is pretty slow, but more likely it is carried by existing air currents outside. Even a barely stirring breeze would counteract the effects of diffusion, and that seaweed is much closer, in the direction from which the breeze is carrying the very strong odour. You would probably not notice the smell of the meat until you were practically on top of it.

If he was suffering from dehydration and heat exposure then a heart attack is a lot more likely as the blood is so much thicker with less water in it and much harder for the heart to pump around the body which is becoming hotter and hotter causing confusion and delirium in the brain. Add in the fact that he was 67 years old and perhaps not feeling well that afternoon, means he's at risk of a very serious health emergency. It was a very bad decision to go walking along on an unfamiliar route, with no phone, too little water and high temperature under the searing afternoon sun.

And his wife is a Doctor? well she should have told him to take his phone and enough water. I wonder if she kept his phone. He did not have to survive to tell people not walk in that heat just like this gentleman said. It is common sense and people know. It was his mistake. His wife was too relaxed on the beach and not worried he was going alone in that heat.

You can have perfect judgement 99.9% of the time but it's the 0.1% that gets you. I think he just overestimated his abilities, he was quite keen on his fitness, being inwardly focused on his health from diet and exercise may have distracted him from external threats like when the ambient temperature exceeds body temperature by a single degree then you need to sweat literally bucketloads to not overheat.

Don't blame the wife. He was also a doctor. I'm sure she tried to dissuade him

He is also a doctor so why blame the wife for his decisions? That's so unfair. He was a grown, intelligent, medically trained man- it's not her job to override what he thought was medically manageable just because she's also a doctor.

He was a unique man. He always did odd things and that’s how we learned alot about our bodies. This experiment he went through is part of him. People will still learn alot from it. Even after his death we are still learning from him. Please stop talking about him negatively.

If he practised what he preached, it's not surprising that he collapsed. 800 calorie diet and fasting? I saw this on ebay and thought it was a crazy diet. Healthy eating is all you need. I hear that he reversed his diabetes, well so did I and I did it through healthy eating. As a doctor, he would have been aware of walking in the boiling hot sun. I wonder why he did it? Did he feel unwell and decide to go back to his hotel, took a short cut and then got lost? As for leaving his phone behind, maybe they just took one phone and he left it on the beach for his wife to call the family. I guess we will never know the full story. All we know for sure, is that a very likeable man sadly lost his life and have left his family and friends devastated.

maybe he wasnt aware how dehydrated he was. I watched video about keto and dehdration and it said after a while the hormones don't signal you are thirsty coz of problems due the mineral depletion.

When I walk out in the Med, I wear white shorts and white vest with a white cap for obvious reasons. I also rehydrate my body with plenty of water and do not do any form of strenuous treking like the doctor did. I can walk in 40c + for a few miles without any issues and I'm exactly the same age as the doctor. He didn't take precautions and most important a mobile.

He was seen at a bus stop, where he might have taken a rest, which might point to his feeling unwell, maybe starting to get a bit confused or disoriented. If that were the case, it would explain his going in the wrong direction under unbearable heat. Whatever happened, people over 40 (and younger as well) should take notice: whether you feel young and fit or not, it is dangerous to endure extreme heat for more than a number of minutes, even more exerting yourself. I doubt Dr. Mosley was entirely unimpaired, cognitively, when he took that direction instead of home. Had he been fully in control, he would never have pushed himself over dry, rocky terrain, under 40°C of temperature. It didn't make any sense. He only pushed himself to get home, but could not even pick the right direction. He must have been unwell at the bus stop. Very unfortunate. He should have asked for help, provided anyone one got close enough, which maybe didn't happen at that time of the day, under a killing sun.

If I hear even one criticism of the search teams, I will explode with anger. This "expert" knew what he could have done to save himself. Somebody who could practice experiments on himself, may have been too cocky to listen to others. My sympathy lies with his wife and children. I really hope they find peace with his absence in their daily lives. He was much loved, of that I am sure. However, perhaps he trusted himself too much.
