Some odd and unusual moments in NHRA drag racing from the 1970's to the 1990's.
List of incidents:
1. Bob Noice's blower belt comes off and ruptures a waterline on the burnout. (1980 NHRA Gatornationals)
2. Ed McCulloch blows the supercharger off the engine the moment he steps on the throttle. (1976 NHRA World Finals)
3. Ron Colson crosses the center line. (1978 NHRA US Nationals)
4. Billy Meyer crosses the center line when is unable to reverse after the burnout. He then plays "chicken" with Raymond Beadle. (1980 NHRA Springnationals)
5. Jim Barnard crosses the finish line first with his front wheels in the air, causing him to lose the race. (1981 NHRA Springnationals)
6. Kenny Bernstein was late, goes up in smoke, and does a wheel stand while Don Prudhomme crosses the center line in front of Bernstein. (1981 NHRA Gatornationals)
7. Shirley Muldowney's engine stalls completing her burnout. (1982 NHRA Winternationals)
8. Gary Ormsby has a flat tire after completing his burnout. (1983 NHRA World Finals)
9. Bill Carter can't get the engine started until the last moment, has no burnout, and still makes a very decent run. (1983 NHRA World Finals)
10. Dick LaHaie can't reverse the car or snap is visor into place. (1987 NHRA Winternationals)
11. John Force's engine stalls after a dry hop. (1987 NHRA Cajun Nationals)
12. Dick LaHaie has a major engine problem while his opponent: Gordie Bonin loses his blower belt on the burnout. Gordie's engine still runs and he is able to coast to victory. (1989 NHRA California Nationals)
13. Kenny Bernstein leaves the stating line before the Christmas Tree was activated. (1991 NHRA Winston invitational)
14. Jim White's rear spoiler comes apart in the lights. (1991 NHRA Winston Invitational)
15. Mark Oswald blows a rear tire in the lights. (1991 NHRA Gatornationals)
16. Wayne Bailey's throttle sticks during the burnout. He then spins it out in the sand trap. (1995 NHRA US Nationals Qualifying)
17. Darrell Alderman suffers a major engine problem as soon as he hits the throttle which results in fire coming out of the hood scoop. (1995 NHRA Southern Nationals)
18. Darrell Gwyn blows a rear tire in the lights. (1988 NHRA Springnationals)
19. Don Garlits turns over backwards and drives back towards the starting line. (1986 NHRA Summernationals)
20. Raymond Beadle is unable so shut off the engine at the far end. The engine detonates after the Safety Safari attempt to shut it off. (1979 NHRA Springnationals)
21. Dick LaHaie loses both front tires after his car went into severe tire shake off the starting line. (1982 NHRA US Nationals)
Thanks for watching.

Unfortunately, that's rules biting a driver in the butt... It's not who gets to the finish line first, it's who crosses the beam first. It's the stupidest rule in motorsports, but that is how the sport works. Sucks for Bernard, though, he had him by half a car and lost for having too much power.
