More odd and unusual things that has happened in NHRA drag racing from the early 1970's to the mid 1990's.
Drag Racing Oddities: • Drag Racing Oddities
List of oddities:
1. Jim Nicoll's clutch explodes at the finish line which cuts the car in half. (1970 NHRA US Nationals)
2. Buddy Ingersoll wins the race because everyone else red-lighted. (1977 NHRA Springnationals)
3. Al Segrini's header flames catch the body on fire. (1979 NHRA Springnationals)
4. Marvin Graham's car shook so bad the chassis cracked and had to be welded in the pits. (1980 NHRA US Nationals)
5. Dave Uyehara experiences bad tire shake and smacks to concrete walls and shoots the rear end, tires, and wing into orbit. (1980 NHRA World Finals)
6. Joe Amato pops the supercharger during the burnout. (1982 NHRA US Nationals)
7. Lucille Lee leaves the starting line, does a big wheel stand and crosses the center line. (1982 NHRA US Nationals)
8. Shirley Muldowney smokes the tires and falls back while Richard Tharp nukes the supercharger and almost gets beat by Shirley. (1983 NHRA Springnationals)
9. Connie Kalitta's engine retains too much heat while waiting for Jody Smart to back up and vaporizes the engine in spectacular fashion. (1983 NHRA Summernationals)
10. "Diamond" Dave Miller's short car. (1985 NHRA US Nationals)
11. Jerry Marconi is a few years late off the starting line and then the parachute refuses to come out. (1986 NHRA Summernationals)
12. Gene Snow's unusual piston from an exploding engine. (1986 NHRA Mile-High Nationals)
13. Dick LaHaie shoots a monstrous amount of raw fuel out of the headers which explodes during the burnout. (1989 NHRA Mile-High Nationals)
14. Dick LaHaie's front wheels jump right over the finish line. (1989 NHRA Mile-High Nationals)
15. Pat Austin Blows the supercharger during the burnout. (1991 NHRA US Nationals)
16. Cory McClenathan blows the supercharger as soon as he hit the throttle which caused the throttle to stick. (1991 NHRA Winston Finals)
17. John Force and Cruz Pedregon smoke the tires trying to set a national record. They then back-peddled to the finish line with Force smacking the wall twice. (1992 NHRA Chief Auto Parts Nationals)
18. Michael Brotherton wins the race but blows the engine which burn off the parachutes. He tries to save it but flips over at the end of the track. (1992 NHRA Winternationals)
19. Gordon Mineo blows both rear tires at the same time. (1992 NHRA Winston Finals)
20. Kenny Bernstein blows the engine in the lights which cuts a tire and sends him over the wall. (1993 NHRA Winternationals)
21. Warren Johnson breaks a wheelie bar right off the starting line. (1994 NHRA US Nationals)
22. Shelly Anderson suffers sever engine and clutch trouble after Rance McDaniel smoked the tires and almost hit the wall. She lost a tire and, on three wheels, won the event. (1994 NHRA Winternationals)
Thanks for watching.

This was drag racing before it was sanitized. Love seeing the line battles and head games. But it would be rare to see more than a couple rounds before an oil down. That I don't miss.

That piston with a valve straight down through it - perfect valve head too! The chances of that are like a lottery win. Great footage of some Brave drivers at the Top of their sport. Thanks for putting this together : )

Those were the days. Much more excitement than today's tragic corporate affairs the complex rumors, and soap opera affairs that are published and broadcast. Don Garlets, Larry Dixon, Dickie Harrell, Tom Hoover, Gene Snow, Johnny West, Roland Leon, TV Tommy Ivo, and hundreds more have all given 100% to the sport that we call NHRA drag racing. We must not forget the spirit of true competition. These people and so many more are our founding fathers of HP and discovery in safety and speed. If not for them we would be living without so many of these advances. Thank you for your posting, it brought back so many great memories.

If memory serves me, Desoto Dragstrip had a sand pit at the end of the track before a hay & tire wall back in the day. It’s been 20+ years ago at this point but remember shoot or brake failures that ended scetchy but with just a pull outta the sand. Than again, that part of Florida is pretty much one big sand trap anyway. Big up to Cleetus for buying and fixing up Desoto Speedway, I spent a lot of time there as a kid. Back in the good ole days when you’d get in the gate even as a 10 year old & split from the parents and meet back up when the night was over. A good community to grow up around, it was the ‘80s though. I had friends that I only ever saw there.

That valve dropped all the way out of the guide while the piston was down. Then it turned 180 degrees while in the cylinder, and then the piston came back up and impaled itself on the valve stem. You couldn't make that happen again if you tried.
