-
The darkspawn are heading north into Ferelden, threatening to destroy everything living. King Cailan and the Grey Wardens have banded together at the fortress of Ostagar to stop the hordes from continuing any further. You are tasked with lighting the tower beacon, to alert teyrn Loghain's forces when to attack. However, things don't go quite according to plans...

LightningSamus No matter how many puppyes he saved before, no horoism makes up for the betrayal of Ostagar. He is the reason, the one to be blamed for the deaths of Cailan, Duncan, the Gray Wardens, all brave soldiers and true heroes fighting for the Ferelden army. And in consequence, he is also to blame for all the dead during the march of the Darkspawn, blamed for all the dead in Lothering and many other cities, all the dead in Denerim as well. So yeah he may have been good once upon a time a long time ago but I wish he died for the Orlesians, that would mean Cailan, Duncan and all else would be alive, also Loghain almost killed the PC in the Tower of Ishal, as he is the one who got the Darkspawn in it.

Cailan didn't refuse Orlais's offer for reinforcements. He wanted the Chevaliers to fight with his army at Ostagar. Loghain however made it clear he didn't want Orlais entering Fereldan, and that they WERE going to fight without them. Also, Loghain offered to have his own men light the beacon in the tower. It was fairly obvious that he was planning on betraying Cailan at this battle. He didn't count on Cailan overruling him and sending Alistair (his brother) and the Hero of Fereldan to light the beacon instead.

You should play the game again man, first of all Longhain has all the forces, Teryns, Arls and the King army, they matched almost even in numbers by the looks of the torches, Cailan was stand only with the the Wardens at the Keep. Also the whole "Charge off the Keep for Ferelden" was Longhain plan. So in the end theres no excuses for Longhain retreat, he was planning that since the begin with no heroic intentions, ffs he even spread out the army to the whole Ferelden and let them die.

For me this is truly one of the most amazing cut-scenes in video game history. The haunting music, the feeling of dread as the darkspawn amass and start moving toward the small band of defenders, the heroic charge of the King's forces against fearful odds...then the later scene with Duncan realising reinforcements aren't coming and seeing the King's forces getting wiped out. @LiveAndSound
@LiveAndSound 10 лет назад
Too bad it's way too long for a movie. Unless they make it a 2-parts or 3-parts movie, and skipped the DLC. However, if one makes a video with the entire game, and deletes any scene including unimportant sidequests or random combat, it could be kinda like that. But then, what about the Warden? He/she doesn't speak at all.
@Camaroni1000
@Camaroni1000 10 лет назад
Yea it could be 6 movies in my mind. 1: becoming a grey warden 2: the battle of ostagar and lothering 3: red cliffe castle 4: ozammar 5: brecillian forest 6: the arch demon. Maybe there could be deleted scenes showing alternate ending and a TV show showing the side quest. This is just what I would want to see though
@LiveAndSound
@LiveAndSound 10 лет назад
Camaroni1000 Becoming a GW is actually rather short, so it can be put along with the Battle of Ostagar and Lothering. For the rest, howe about 2-hour movies, 1 for the circle and elves, 1 for the dwarves and anvil, 1 for Redcliffe, and 1 for Denerim and the Archdemon. But as a TV show focused on the side quests, it wouldn't be a good idea. It would be very boring. DA2 however would be a perfect TV show.

@brahmantyoihsan5938
@brahmantyoihsan5938 3 года назад
Why? Loghain made the right choice here. It was too late to charge in. By the time the signal came, most of the soldiers in the ruins would have been dead already. Had Loghain charged in according to plan, he would be risking _thousands_ of fresh soldiers just to save _hundreds_ who might be too injured to fight another battle. Worse still, they would have achieved *nothing* because killing ten thousand darkspawn does absolutely nothing to stop the Blight - the only way to win is to kill the archdemon behind it.
@nordicgaming5429
@nordicgaming5429 3 года назад
@@brahmantyoihsan5938 And who’d do you think would be able to kill the Archdemon? All the Wardens that were at the frontline, including Duncan, died, with only the hero and Alistair surviving only to have Loghain blame the Wardens of betraying King Cailan. You Honestly expect a normal army of Ferelden to be able to fix everything after this? At the very least, he should have let the Wardens from Orlais enter Ferelden, rather than stopping them at the border. Normal men with swords can’t beat back an entire Darkspawn Horde without reinforcements.

@Shagon89
@Shagon89 10 лет назад
They are outnumbered and not up in the Fortress (which would be logical in this case), because they had to bait the Darkspawn into an attack, so that the main army can strike from behind and trap them in this narrow path. The plan was good. If only it had worked fully...
@LiveAndSound
@LiveAndSound 10 лет назад
Shagon89 It wouldn't have worked. They expected hundreds of Darkspawn, not millions. There were so many, they could be practically seen all over the Korcari Wilds from the bridge (Which, you know, it's very damn high), and those were not even a third of the Horde. They wouldn't have been able to flank them effectively, since they couldn't even see the end of the Horde. There were too many to sucessfully trap them like intended. And that's not bringing the Archdemon. The plan was good, they just underestimated the Darkspawn. It would've been better if someone didn't tell the Orlesian GW reinforcements to fuck off instead of helping them.

DATskorge Correct.But what about when he sent a poisoner to poison Arl Eamon? Yes his withdrawal from the Ostagar battle was a clever move but king Cailan is, well was, a symbol of morale for Ferelden. He could have rescued him and then flee. He did many things that point him out like a traitor. He was thinking for the good of ferelden without thinking its people.He waited for the dark spawn at Denerim while the whole land was on fire.Because of him Lothering will never be civilized again.Because of him so many died and many faced him as a threat because he left the king to die. Cailan was naive and fool to believe that he could defeat the evil but he didn't deserve to die like this. The whole story proves that Loghain went crazy after Ostagar. He was selling his own people as slaves to the Tevinter for money. He left some soldiers to look out grey wardens and not to protect the civilians or at least evacuate them? He poisoned arl Eamon while he could explain him and perhaps convince him to talk to Cailan? He triggered a civil war and let the civilians outside the Denerim to the Maker's mercy. He was thinking for the good of the land but instead he destroyed it.

+Peter Feher Wow, thank you for the upvotes and responses! I finished the game a few weeks ago, so I can post my opinion of DA:I. It was good, but it was also bleeding from several wounds. Mostly technical ones. I started playing months after the release, in hopes of avoiding them, but with no avail. First, bugs everywhere, and the graphical ones were the least of the problems. Companions frequently froze in combat, where I had to give a "jump" order to 'unfreeze' them, NPC-s glitched through obstacles and/or teleported; if the game didn't like where I casted a spell, it just teleported me elsewhere, and these happened frequently. (Or was it just my copy?) Second, the tactical camera was terrible, I won't even start saying why, if you played the game, you know already. But the game itself was complex, huge, and calling for you to explore it. The lore is still there, plus we got a crafting system, and I could go on and on, as this game had a lot of content. 7/10. Without the technical problems it could've been a 8.5/10, so in my opinion it still wouldn't have been as good as Origins, mostly for the reasons I wrote in the main comment.

The archdemon wasn't present and there was no guarantee that charging would have won them the skirmish to begin with. Cailan had no reason to lead the charge other than his fantasy of a heroic death 'ending the blight' (that they couldn't end there in the first place). To make it worse, you only discover Cailen's own ambitions in Return To Ostagar, so he gets to be a martyr and Loghain the villain. What followed was Loghain's ignorance of how a blight actually worked, trying to kill the only group who could properly an archdemon (and all the rest).

This whole battle scene pretty much describes how dragon age went from good to bad. "Darkspawn coming out of the forest and the kings army standing ready to fight no matter what" The darkspawn being the new generation of dragon age and every other shit to come. And the kings army representing Dragon age origins. Final scene of the battle. "The end is near, soon it will all be over. Dragon age 2 is upon us. And blablabla then came inqusition giving us a good story and lalalala but not much else memorable except for the open world. Dragon age Origins, you will be remembered. Dragon age 2 didn't have a lot of development time and was rushed, inquisition is their first time going open world and they tried to appeal to casuals, they've already noted a lot of the mistakes in inquisition like the mmo quests so i think da4 may surpass or at least equal origins based on them learning from their mistakes and having more time to make it

I love the neat camera tricks they do to really sell just how massive the Blight is, not to mention how horrific the darkspawn are. None of the sequels have really ever been able to recapture that feeling of the darkspawn being a real, tangible threat. Hell, Origins was able to sell it's villain in just a few hours while Inquisition couldn't do that in over thirty. Granted I do like Inquisition, just thought Corypheus was bland

Man this takes me back. It was so epic playing this for the first time. Man though the thing that sucks about what happened to Cailan and Duncan is that the plan actually probably would have worked if Loghain didn't decide to betray him. Plus the other country, Orlais was actually going to send aid to Ferelden.
@brahmantyoihsan5938
@brahmantyoihsan5938 3 года назад
It wouldn't have worked. By the time the signal was lit, most of the Grey Wardens and the King's force would have perished already. The Hammer and Anvil strategy would have failed because the "Anvil" had been broken. Waiting for Orlais' reinforcement was not an option, because: 1. First and foremost, the darkspawn would not wait for them to be ready. The reinforcement would never have made it in time for the battle of Ostagar. 2. There would not be any trust or cooperation between the two armies, given their recent history in the Fereldan Occupation and Rebellion. 3. Orlais may use this opportunity to invade Ferelden again, despite the ongoing Blight. 4. Accepting the reinforcement means Ferelden would be heavily indebted to Orlais. Refusal to pay this debt means Orlais would have casus belli to restart the war, and Ferelden would lose any support or justification for the next rebellion.

@brahmantyoihsan5938
@brahmantyoihsan5938 2 года назад
The tactic itself was not bad, it's the execution that went terribly wrong. They were supposed to stand their ground and lure the darkspawn into a killzone. Loghain would then deliver the decisive blow with his men while the enemy is trapped between the two forces and the fortress wall. Simply put, it was a "Hammer and Anvil" strategy. Unfortunately, they made some fatal mistakes. Not only did the defenders charged forward and away from the fortress wall, the Wardens also failed to light the beacon in time. By the time the signal came, most of the defenders would have died already; their "Hammer and Anvil" strategy would not work because the "Anvil" had been broken.

Just done a replay of DA:O here in 2021 and it's still a brilliant gem. The fact that people are still arguing about Loghain to this day is a credit to old Bioware story building. I'm one of the few people who don't begrudge what Loghain did at Ostagar. It was made very clear (mostly in DLC) that the darkspawn army was too great (even if he had not retreated). Cailan had no reason to be leading the charge other than his fantasy dream of a heroic death or 'ending the blight' (with no Archdemon present). Loghain's fault afterwards was his total ignorance of how the blight actually worked, going against the Warden's to lessen the political fallout and thinking he could unite Ferelden himself. If you recruit him, he'll admit how wrong he was in every way - but also doesn't regret his decisions. Good intentions are often paved in blood, as they say. I understand why so many people refuse to recruit Loghain - but I always do. His insights and redemption throughout the series is a joy to behold.
@brahmantyoihsan5938
@brahmantyoihsan5938 3 года назад
Could you really blame Loghain for not knowing how the Blight worked, when the Grey Wardens kept their secrets to themselves? Heck, Alistair had been a Warden for six months by the time of DA:O, and he didn't know what goes inside the Joining potion. Besides, it's not as if Loghain's distrust of the Wardens was completely unfounded. The Wardens once put Maric in harm's way by taking him on their expedition to the Deep Road (the Calling novel), and Sophia Dryden led the Wardens into rebelling against King Arland, despite their oath of neutrality.
@kitsunefire1
@kitsunefire1 2 года назад
I agree Loghain, for all his military smarts, didn't think through that the political ramifications render his military decisions useless if the nobility won't unite behind him. He did what was necessary, by sparing a good reinforcement army from being massacred, but sending a horse or something to sound the retreat for Cailin's remaining forces might've saved some extra good men and women, allowed the Grey Wardens to at least corroborate his decision to retreat, and convince the other Banns to work towards a new solution... But his own frustration towards Cailin's fascination with Grey Wardens caused him to be blind to the fact that they weren't the problem in the first place, and he caused so much unneeded strife after Ostagar that he could've not only remained alive, but also cemented his position as Hero. EDIT: I read above that the Grey Wardens did play a part in the rebellion against Arland, so it makes a bit more sense... but considering the only two survivors were newer recruits, rather than seasoned Grey Warden veterans, I would imagine that blaming it solely on them wasn't exactly a wise decision and he could've at least had two more able bodies in his own armies.

You're right; Cailin didn't just care about glory. He cared about his subjects, and was very kind to people in general. He was however, largely ignorant and/or innocent. How so? They made it pretty clear that the only way to end a Blight is to kill the archdemon behind it. Even if they kill every darkspawn in Ostagar - and I highly doubt they could - what then? The Fifth Blight horde was said to be even greater than any of previous ones, surpassing even the First Blight horde (Codex entry: Stalata Negat) - and in the First Blight horde was large enough to wage war against all of Thedas for 190 years. Ten thousand casualties or so means nothing to the darkspawn.

I had a feeling Cailan probably knew that he wouldnt win this battle which was why he wanted the orlesians to come. We know he was planning on marrying the empress but I think that he knew this battle would be lost but probably thought he would atleast survive and that Loghain would come and try to get him out. But in the event of his death I'm thinking he sent Alistair and The Warden to the tower to keep Alistair alive and The Warden to make sure Alistair survived. He knew Alistair was his brother and he probably wanted to keep him safe if something happened to him, and he had us go because we were already ingratiated with Alistair and we were NEW to the order, so he wanted us to survive because we were still kinda young and we were also skilled in combat. The Wardens only recruit the skilled not just for show but so when their calling comes then they take as many darkspawn down with them.

In Loghain's mind, Cailan was going to be the doom of the Ferelden that Loghain and Maric(Cailan's father) fought so hard to free. Cailan was going to allow the Orlesians into Ferelden to aid in the fight against the Blight but Loghain believed that the Orlesians would use that opportunity to reconquer Ferelden. Loghain also believed Cailan was too naive to defeat the darkspawn and that naivete would lead to the Darkspawn destroying Ferelden. So Loghain believed it was either choose to side with a King who would doom Ferelden or choose the country and save it himself.
