It does help that their names fit the typical style that he uses to give silly names to characters. I mean, take 'Sylvando' and then try to make it more silly. Just try. Or cruelcumber. Or Funghoul. Shit is classic and also too silly to be outdone by any sillier names you could come up with.
@@NatePieper Well the thing does get around by hopping from foot to foot like it's on hot coals. And its fighting stance is to lean slightly to the left and shake it's right leg at you in a rather chillaxed manner. As the monsters go, it's pretty crazy even for an RPG monster. And it avoids being the generic starting slime...by mostly hanging out with slimes and being very obviously not the same shape or color.
I love how dunkey has this amazing skill of being able to tell you exactly what happens in certain parts of the game but you have absolutely no fucking clue what he’s talking about until you’ve actually played the game
Imma hijack this comment and just say this: I related with the battle encounter song in PKMN SS so much, it hurt my soul as a kid because I played that game everyday.
For me it's the music. I've only played DQ1 and DQ2 long time ago and when I saw this it looked like a good time to try this series again and hoo boy was the OST as a whole just gawd awful.
meteor22 see for me I love dragon quest as a whole considering VIII was my favorite game as a kid and still now. The soundtrack really influenced me as a musician and still can listen to the entire thing today. I loved XI and while they kept the same sort of feel the soundtrack is a bit of a letdown. Was not nearly as memorable unfortunately.
@@Waltersopcalamos requires max characters in the best armor and fully kitted out. Anything less and hed be easy because you are op at every point in the game.
As soon as you start playing it even. It's so damn cliche, but considering the series kind of started rpg games as far as I've heard, is it really cliche itself, or is it why we call things cliche?
I played this with my dad and it was one of my favorite moments ever staying up late and just both of us staring at each other and thinking about what to do next to beat the next enemy. This game really helped my through the quarantine.
@@breaking963 lmao do you even know what a boomer is? Or where it comes from? Probably not without googleing it right now. You are using the word completely out of context & wrong here haha
It was such a happy surprise that it was on his best of 2021. Hoping that he was able to get more people to try out and enjoy this game and the rest of the series :)
@@_FiFo_ If it's anything like dragon quest 9, theres a load of unique monsters, like 100ish, which each have 1 or 2 reskins, which is still pretty impressive. Of course, pokemon has 8x the unique models, so it's be a much bigger job
yeah right, gamefreak is too lazy to even bother making the stationary graphics look nice, you think they're gonna put in the effort to make animations for all 800+ pokemon? nah man, ain't happening, especially not while Masuda's in charge.
It’s ironic that Dunkey picked the octopus boss as an example of a boss you have to grind to beat as there is an old lady on the island the arc takes place in that will give you her canon for free that will make the boss waay easier. Like, it gets stunned for 3-4 turns right off the bat easy.
@@indeed2207 I am certain you are well aware of the manyfold failings of the genre, tha half hearted attempts within said genre at correcting saud failings, and the fact modern installments are moving very far from the traditional formula now that technical limitations no longer demand those unfortunate compromises.

@@vintheguy Mouse aiming was a design compromise, shouldnt games with ke,board aiming still be made? Artstyles are not a very good comparison to poorly designed systems.
Yeah, hate to break the bad news to you man, but Corey, Gel and I all got a little something, and it seems the devs just didnt have any little somethings left for you man. Sorry dude
This is less how I pick games, but just about how I pic which charcters to play as Hey, it's a nun with a giant battering ram gun Hey, it's a black goop guy Hey, it's Little Red riding Hood on helium with a scythe gun Hey, it's a hot chick
DQXI is easily one of my favourite games, I love it so much, and I’m so glad dunkey enjoyed it even a little, as he’s said in another video, 3/5 for dunkey pretty much means it held his interest and it’s worth playing to the end, which in my opinion it absolutely is, if anyone hasn’t played this game yet, do it, it’s really good
"A 25 hour game stretched to 40", try the 160 I reached when I finished all the game's content lmao. Also I'm sad he didn't show the best adorable enemy; the Sham Hatwich. They're just tiny boars in witch hats, and I love them.
Fr though why would he? This isn't like a scholarly pursuit. Its video games. Not that they cant be serious or deep, but you shouldn't have to go outside your zone all the time. Dunk should just play the things that look interesting to him and then when they suck, trash on them. Anyone who knowingly picks up a game they already hate, they're a fucking idiot. We aren't scholars guys, we play games.
I personally like clearing out places in games like these. I figured it out back when I was playing Mario RPG as a kid: if you kill every enemy in each new screen, then you never have to "take time off" to level up since your doing it simultaneously as you explore. Anytime I return to a screen I ignore all the enemies, but not the first time.
Ever heard of Rocket Slime? You play _as_ the funny blue guy. And he has a giant tank. Which is also a funny blue guy. And guess what? You can shoot the funny blue guy Out of the funny blue guy! It’s really unique; worth checking out
@@mangotango8115 I played the game and it's good until the final boss where the stupid fucking dragon started to autoload ammo so I can't cock block the crewmates which just made me lose all motivation for beating the game.
@@seanxednycanonuevo2064 Point is, he gave it a 3. It isn't up to us to change his standards for him. Besides, its the Dunk we're talking about: He can probably give it a GlazedBlueberryDonut/5 and it will still be an actual standard.
If Dragon Quest XI Echoes of an Elusive Age S Definitive Edition is so good why isn’t there a Dragon Quest XI Echoes of an Elusive Age S Definitive Edition 2?
Unlimited Sand! I know you're being sarcastic, but this concept was actually original to DQ1. It may be the definition of every RPG nowadays, but they are really all just elaborate DQ clones at heart. No, I am not joking. Look it up!
honestly, it's so cliche that it's kinda charming. Especially since they spell out that you are the chosen one from the start rather than saving it for a "twist"
How can a video be posted 5 minutes ago, someone make a comment and over a hundred and eighty people already approve of it??????? I'm starting to think, my PC doesn't actually show me correctly calculated times...
Thats not sad at all. That just means you didn't rush through the game like dunkey did. Also I doubt he even did the post game which is a good 30 hours right there. The game is supposed to take like 100 or so hours.
@@user-ok8yq6nc6xHe probably just rushed the main quest and tried to skip every mob possible, if you do sidequests as they appear and take your time you don't really have to grind at all except for some optional stuff.
My first time it took me like 65 ish for act 1 and 2 including sidequests and then 90 total for the whole thing, wouldve took me longer if i didnt abuse early electro light, took me like 3 ish hrs of grinding from 35ish to get to lvl 99 so i dont get the point
Took 90+ hours from me to get every character lv 99 and make all the best +3 weapons、+3 armors and then finally, less than 9 minutes to beat off the giant beetle
To be fair, I always liked DQ's handling of the grinding with the metal ennemies. Once you understand that these are the shit to grind, you start minmaxing your party arround the fact that you need ways to deal with these, understanding the many tools the game gives ya to beat them and once you encounter them it's always a big moment where you hold your breath and pray for good rng. I get that it ultimately becomes really frustrating, but it's also like the fun of going into a casino and hoping for a good roll, and in the end even if the odds are stacked against you you always end up having results. In any case it's way better than "lesser ennemy bashing"
3:52 Holy shit. So I tend to listen to RU-vid videos instead of watching them. I had no idea how ingrained FFVII and Chrono Trigger were embedded in my mind. Instantly knew the music.
Instead of going on a rant about random encounters vs avoidable encounters I'll just keep it short. Earthbound has the best grinding mechanic. If your obviously stronger than the enemy, it's instantly killed and you get the exp.
That's pretty common for any JRPG and in DQ case, lower level enemies would just run away from you and there's also enemies that mutiply your EXPx10/x20 no matter what.
@@TylerEdlin84 alright, I understand why you may dislike it, I know many people don't like the battle mechanic. I think that earthbound still holds up to this date, however, as you don't play it just for the battling, you play it for the funny characters and story.
i completed the main story in 98 hours. theres still so much to do. this game made me cry. you can change your characters skill tree at any point. it was worth every penny
@@danielahn5140 maybe because he's just giving his opinion as someone who may not like the tedium of the battles, yet likes literally everything else about the game. Almost like not everyone, even other jrpg fans like grinding. Cause he's talking to an audience that may not like them but he wants to show off the ones he thinks are worth playing?
I feel like Dunkey at least partially set himself up for not enjoying the second half of the game because the level curve caught up with him not doing random encounters in the first half. The game assumes you're going to be fighting a lot in the dungeons, and balances the bosses around what level you're likely to be at by the time you fight them. Having a really low level curve means the game is way too easy to make too easy for yourself. Sounds like Dunkey just doesn't like JRPGs and doesn't want to play them the way they're designed to be played, and then blamed the game when the game pushed back against his refusal to engage with the game on its own terms. Despite this, I still respect Dunkey, and I like the fact that he still gives a lot of respect to positive aspects of games, even in a genre he personally hates. signed, a JRPG fan who also hates excessive grinding.
I had played this game at my grandparents house when I was younger and I had forgotten the name, and it was giving me a ton of anxiety trying to remember it, because I thought I was crazy and it never actually exsited. (Edit: The Game was, "Dragon Quest Swords" I think.)
I only found myself needing to grind at all like 3 times, and I’ve put 160 hours in. The game is a lot more enjoyable if you take your time. Also, it’s definitely balanced with completion of the side quests in mind.
This game is extremely charming and the world building and the characters are fantastic. I've played other dragon quest games and this by FAR has the least grinding so don't let that put you off. Although I did spend 100 hours on the main story so maybe it is grindy if you go through it quicker
It makes me so happy seeing all these positive comments! Playing Dragon Quest 9 growing up it always made me kinda sad how like nobody was talking about it, I had never played a game so emotional, exciting and fun with such an amazing creative story. Now Dragon Quest 11 is here the series is getting so much more attention and I love it!
You can thank Bravely Default for that. Square Enix didn't think JRPGs were popular in the west (notice how Final Fantasy at that time tried distancing itself from turn-based combat more and more), until Bravely Default sold more copies in America than Japan. Now you have DQ11, basically a love letter to its own genre.
@@moonbug7252 same here! They said in an interview that making a remake for 9 would be relatively easy, but if they did I’d imagine they’d want to make it better than just the bare minimum
Gotta say that you summed up perfectly things that I dislike about jRPGs, even if I enjoy playing them overall. Especially the point about having too many punching bags instead of fewer challenging encounters.
