New shirts and hats! sharkrobot.com/collections/te... In this episode, Ginyu takes a very particular interest in Goku's body. Episode 22: • DragonBall Z Abridged:...
The bots are really gonna try and pull that on Masako? They keep getting more and more vague, too, probably to make filtering them harder without getting real comments.
I've always loved that "being a sarcastic obstructionist asshole to Freeza just for its own sake" is the one and only time Nail and Guru actually agree about something in this series.
I was looking for this comment. It is honestly the only praise Nail ever receives from Guru. Pretty sure it is the only praise Guru ever gives without being sarcastic or making fun of the person right afterwards.
I really hope they address that in a flashback. We saw a picture of Raditz, Nappa, and the Ginyus setting up tents. I'm guessing Frieza and Guru arrived around the time the suburbs were built.
I’m glad you went with the decision to have the characters keep their voices, even when the bodies were switched. That made no sense in the original. Your soul doesn’t have your voice box with you!
@@TheBlueArmageddon This is actually the correct answer. Its a decision based on editorial reasons, and not logical ones. Having the voice actors stay the same with each body makes it REALLY easy to keep track of who is in who. Especially if someone were to come in mid episode.
@@OathKeeperRiku07 yeah but that was filler so while a fun episode, wasn't Canon and this was a gag, whereas in JLU, it was an actual story plot with a meta Joke since at the time Flashes VA Michael Rossenbulm was playing Flash on JLU And Lex Luthor on the CW's Smallville
Props to whoever edited this for keeping Ginyu striking the pose fullscreen, then pulling back when Goku is copying it to show Nick also copying it. Nice touch.
@@nubreed13 Red M&M guy. Also, watching old cartoon from way way back when, and I was like "Is that Fry?" Can't recall what it was but I'm sure there are quite a few of those out there.
I always thought that the power up to Dende made him sarcastic and outspoken. Before then he was very passive. I guess unlocking his potential made him confident.
When I was a kid I parroted that "work the shaft" joke CONSTANTLY without ever finding out what it meant. Literally didn't realize until I was like 18 😭
@@kevinb1096 I just prefer Vegeta's and Freeza's, Vegeta is so much more of an lovable asshole and Little Kuriboh does a comedic camp villain like nobody.
If anything, i’d take that as a good excuse to give the anime, kai or the manga a try again Even as a fan, there are sk many genuine great things in the og series that get overshadowed by bigger moments It makes coming back to tfs have a whole new meaning when you get to notice references to jokes and moments from the actual series that you might’ve missed There are definitely a good amount of jokes from tfs that you thought they made up when in reality they were just from the series or something lol
14:43-14:55 Same. Feels like whenever a body swap episode happens, especially in animation, they swap the voices so it’s “easier to keep track of” but if you wanna trust your audience, the voices should be kept where they are, but the mannerisms, cadences, and other stuff should help tell that “Oh, it’s not the original soul/personality in that body.”
Aye an unfortunate choice swapping the VA, the body swap trope is such a cool one when done right. Buffy did a fantastic job with one and you can see both the character Buffy and Faith adopt each other’s mannerisms and they totally nail it.
Its that but i also imagine a part of it is just because its streamlines the process easier Media but specifically animation (especially on tv) are incredibly costly and time consuming, so cutting corners where you can is done 24/7. Even in a perfect world where artists actually got the time and money to complete their work, at some point you’d need to cut corners or put a stop to it or nothing would ever get done. Having the va, script, directors, choreographers, board artists etc all work together to sell a body swap trope can land BEAUTIFULLY when in sync But for some productions, it can be high risk, high reward, for some productions, a minor flub can mean death for their project. Especially when descions are made by higher up executives who sign their paychecks. So i get why someone would be willing to cut corners on an episode just centered around a gimmick
I’ve seen the argument that it’s to cater to channel surfers that might not know the context. If character X randomly behaves like Y, these guys will be confused, if they have the same voice it’s clearer why It’s a stupid ass reasoning, but it makes sense
I always found it weird how the character voices would switch when they swapped bodies. Like, very rarely was it ever addressed when it happened. So, props to TFS for the direction they took.
I honestly thought Masako as Ginyu was a brilliant performance, it was before I knew Masako himself was British, but at the time seeing the same voice make such a difference totally sold the scene for me
@@alexzero3736 it's called acting, changing the accent is not that hard, even I can pull a British accent and English is just my second language out of four.
Agreed although the switched voice is nearly identical to his actual voice. So much so when I did watch his channel I was like oh wow it’s the swapped voice naturally it is a bit diffrent but it is funny it’s closer to his actual voice
I love that Ginyu and Goku kept their voices but the VA's imitate the articulation and manerisms of the others voice acting. Reminds me of Black Goku speaking like Zamasu and Zamasu speaking like Goku or even Clancy Brown speaking like the Flash in Justice League.
I literally quote Guru so much my friends who haven't even seen this say "they wont be able to air it on the news because it'll be soo BRUTAL" in his voice
That spot at 2:05 always seemed to fit just right to me. Never felt off in any way. It's really in line Guru's personality to take a break and zone out after exerting a modicum of energy, completely ignoring Dende's outburst in the process, then continuing on with his commentary as if he didn't just make you wait for his explanation.
Love how Ginyu values teammates not for their skills, but the color of their skin. Like a super weird set of priorities of aesthetics over anything else.
I’m disappointed they didn’t mention anything about how Dende becomes much more openly snarky and cocky after the power up, implying that guru unleashed his smartass potential as well as his healing powers. Must have been unintentional but they should have taken credit for it.
I always enjoyed Masako's portrayal of Ginyu Goku cuz it gave an idea of what his Goku Black portrayal would sound like (I know that TFS has since done a DBS scene with Goku Black in it, but still)
I have great respect for any show that doesn't swap voices when characters swap bodies. It's one of the reasons I love Golden Wind's dub so much. It's such a great way for the actors to really show their talents
Yeah I've always hated it in shows where voices swap with bodies. I like it better when either the voice actor stays with the body or has to do their best impression of the other character. Part of that is because vocal chords don't change but I feel people use vocal chords very instinctively to the point where using a different set is going to produce a different voice. Plus I always like seeing actors/voice actors showing their stuff by acting as a different character.
so, Bill Friberger actually adressed that on a Sonic Boom commentary in which they actually had Sonic & Eggman swap bodies & voices 1- he somehow was apparently unaware that most cartoons also swap voices. 2- Also because a lot of the jokes had them trying to pass as each other the script basically said something like "Sonic: [in Eggman's body pretending to be Sonic]" so Roger & Mike would sometimes get confused as to who actually had to say which line
every time i walk outside and it's blindingly bright, i always manage to say "oh god... NATURAL LIGHT!" idk why, but Taka's delivery was so perfect, i can't help but laugh every time i hear it. also Antfish cannot be understated. his acting and his performance as Ginyu is amazing and later down the line he plays a picture perfect Mr. Satan. he's amazing in everything he does.
I’ve been battling depression for over a decade, but the past week has been one of the hardest yet. These videos, and DBZA in general, are one of the few things that manage to put a smile on my face almost the entire time I’m watching them. Thank you so much for what you’ve created. I can’t wait to be able to binge the entire thing when it’s done.
If there’s anything I want more than life, is them explaining how “Team Fortress 2” sound effects made their way into the edit. Obviously not what sold me on the final project but GOD do I love hearing them!!!
The voices never switching when body swaps happened always annoyed the hell outta me too!!! So glad you guys did what you did, and the performances were fantastic! ~_~
I also like it when shows maintain the voices of the bodies when characters swap bodies. It becomes jarring when they don't. Even more so when they do it for one swap pair and don't do it for another, even when it happens in the same episode. For example the episode 'A change of face' in the original Ben 10 series. Gwen and Charmcaster swap bodies and their voices stay consistent. However later in the episode, Gwen (back in her original body) and Ben swap bodies but the voices are not consistent. Meaning that you hear Bens voice coming out of Gwens body and visa versa.
Farscape did the best body swap episode ever, when it comes to actors playing each other's characters. Out Of Their Minds is still screamingly hilarious, all these years later.
I didn't know someone else had mentioned it in the comments! It really is the best example of this trope I can personally think of, and I've seen a fair few of them.
@@dvdkolk Truth. Probably the best sci-fi series ever made when it comes to sheer depth and breadth of character development and evolution. Not a single one of the protagonists (or the primary antagonists, for that matter) are anywhere near the same person at the end of Season 4 that they were in Season 1. And all those changes are *earned*.
11:40 If my memory is correct Guru birthed all the namekians that appeared in the Namek saga in DBZ considering that namekians reproduce Asexually through eggs.
It’s weird, aside from the Sonic Boom cartoon, this is probably the only body swap story that I can think of where the voices stay the same, but the inflections change
I'm with Lani. One of my least favourite tropes is when shows do a body swap plot but the voices change, so I was thrilled to hear Antfish play Goku and Masako play Ginyu in the coming episode; it's great to let these actors flex their skills and try their hand at playing a different character.
A thought that just came to mind. Lani said "good on the scouters for not breaking" when Goku powered up. When the Ginyu force landed on Namek and gave Frieza his new scouter, they mentioned they were the new up-to-date scouters. Assumedly, being up-to-date means better tracking of power levels and greater resistance to breaking while analyzing. Later Frieza mentions that it's been a long while since he's transformed and last time he clocked his second form the power level was 1 million. How?! How did they even analyze that when before this scouters broke long before reaching 100k?!
Ik this comment is a year old but 1. Freeza estimates his power level is probably over 1 million, he actually isn't saying that as a matter of fact and 2. Scouters are just little mobile devices, certainly stronger stationary power reading stations existed before. They appear in anime filler
Fun Fact: Ginyu's power level is 120,000, and Vegeta's power level in his Great Ape form was 180,000, which means Vegeta was stronger than Ginyu before he lost his tail.
@@nicolasachille4371I mean great ape was usually fast enough to kill most aliens, not to mention fast enough to catch and crush Goku, so it could go either way.
@@nicolasachille4371 Ozaru explicitly doesn't have a speed penalty. Neither does Piccolo's gigantification for that matter. Their speed scaling consistently is explicitly pointed out for both
I just want to point out that I got a Jimmy John’s commercial during this episode and the voiceover sounded JUST like the Spacey’s commercials. My first thought was “I don’t remember another Namekamania commercial.” I have been corrupted and I love it.
Rodger from American Dad is the perfect example of the character “body switch” voice thing. Seth Macfarlane was once voiced Rodger doing an impression of Stan and he nails it.
The JoJo Part 5 dub did the thing Kaiser was talking about was committing to keeping the Voice Actors attached to the body but switching the personality.
I never knew the episodes had names until they brought up the crab metal song possibly being in the description and then going to the description of ep 22 and seeing it for the first time! This episode is called… “The Good, The bad, and the purple”
After this episode there was a week that was cloudy throughout where I lived, on the first sunny morning I woke up and yelled "Oh God, natural light!" from my room with the same delivery as Guru, and my mother lost her shit. She would quote that occasionally ever since.
I've said it before, I'll say it again. I absolutely love this series, watching new episodes are some of the highlights of my week. Its so fun to go through the series getting the creator commentary. I started watching this series back in middle school and now I'm going onto my final year of college, so DBZA has been a big part of my life. I've the episodes and specials so many times, but this gives me a brand new look at all these episodes I grew up with. I actually have been stopping myself from going back and watching the episodes ahead of the commentary bc I just want to experience them again with the commentary
14:40 there is a trope called "Voices Are Mental" that actually address this and it seems that its mostly of a lack of talent or range from the voice actors. In almost any time there is a body swap, the characters never keep their voices, they trade them and its because the actors dont know how to play other characters than the one they are already doing(and if they do and tried it may have come out wrong).
My headcanon for Gohan's piano recitals is Chichi made him practice and acted as a teacher at a very young age. She then made Goku sit down, watch, and act like the audience in a mock recital while the three year old awkwardly clanks on the keyboard.
According to the wiki (which you can take or leave honestly) every Namekian is one of Guru's children. At the very least the Elders all are, I believe.
Ginyu in all fairness was league above the rest of the force. He was actually about even to base goku when he arrived, but once he start using Kaio ken he was clearly outmatched, needing to switch bodies
As someone who watched DBZ week-to-week as a kid pre-Kai, the goku/ginyu voice choice helped a lot with clearly distinguishing who was who over a series of multiple episodes. I probably coulda figured it out, but both the sub and dub did it so they probably knew it was better for younger audiences.
14:43 Another fantastic example of a well-executed body swap comes from Star Trek Prodigy. There's an episode where Dal R'El and Vice Admiral Janeway swap consciousness, and both Brett Gray and Kate Mulgrew are absolutely brilliant.
It's so awesome looking back on how much literally everything in the series improved in the span of around 10 episodes, from episode 11 up to 22. DBZ Abridged really did go from being another abridged series in its first few episodes, albeit a very good and high quality one compared to most others at the time, to really being its own beast entirely once the Namek Saga had begun.
